 | | Phony Benoni: All right. For the next 332.5 hours, give or take a longer-than-usual version of the National Anthem, I want to hear nothing actually about football, or any up-and-close personal stories about the Harbaughs or Ray Lewis singing like a swan, or any analysis ranging from two-bit to even more worthless million-dollar, or the word "Super" in any way, shape, or manner conceivable on this or any other planet. Cheerleaders, maybe. |

 | | WannaBe: So, will Jim or John pay for the plane tix for Mom and Dad? Aand will they sit with the owners of San Francisco, or Balttimore? Will we get to see (baby) pictures of the brothers? Did they fight when they were young? What were their favourite food? Did they ever double date with anyones? Did they like Mac 'n Cheese? How about Happy Meals? Did they share a room with bunk bed? or separate beds? Did they take bath together? Do you have picture of those? |

 | | WannaBe: Currently, 49ers are 4.5 pts favourite, O/U is 49. (The lines opened at 5, and 49.5) Also, Falcons being a four point dog, at home, and being the #1 seed, was the biggest (dog) line for #1 seed since the playoffs expanded to the current format. (SF Chronicle) But the paper did not mention what team was the previous biggest (dog) or what that spread was... |

| Jan-21-13 | | playground player: Bob Costas on the radio this morning said, "I was the only one at NBC" who suspected there was anything fishy about the Great McGwire-Sosa Home Run Race. Evidently there are a lot of butterballs at NBC. |

 | | keypusher: <Also, Falcons being a four point dog, at home, and being the #1 seed, was the biggest (dog) line for #1 seed since the playoffs expanded to the current format. (SF Chronicle)> According to Grantland, it was the biggest since the 1976 AFC Championship, where the Steelers were favored at Oakland. Why were the Steelers favored? Well, they had won two straight Super Bowls. They started the season 1-4 and finished 10-4. Oh, and check out how their defense was playing... http://www.pro-football-reference.c... As the world knows, Oakland won 24-7 and then clobbered the Vikings in the Super Bowl. |

| Jan-22-13 | | Jim Bartle: Not to knock Oakland, but I think every single Pittsburgh running back was injured for that game. They did have an incredible defense, though. |

 | | keypusher: <Jim Bartle: Not to knock Oakland, but I think every single Pittsburgh running back was injured for that game. They did have an incredible defense, though.> Yup, Harris and Bleier were both out. And the Steelers had five shutouts in a 14-game season. Still pretty amazing that a 13-1 team playing at home was the underdog. Sorry, Phony, just noticed your no-football rule. Now that I've apologized, I of course intend to go on flouting it. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <keypusher> No problem. Think of that rant as a New Year's Resolution, made knowing there was no chance of it being fulfilled. Besides, Oakland had good cheerleaders that year. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Good Afternoon.
I'll post this here since we've been discussing it- but eventually I think I'll move all the posts on this subject over to the kibbutzing section of the Vladimir Petrov home page. Two facts to report:
1. Dale Brandreth, who edited the <Andris Fride> biography of <Petrovs>, replied to my email and promised to look in to the 1907 vs. 1908 birth year discrepancy, so I'm still waiting to hear what further information he might uncover. 2. Vladimir Dedkov firmly believes his Grandfather was born in 1908. I'm continuing to work on a better translation of the biography <Galina Petrov-Mathis <<<Star Extinguished Before its Time>>> Riga, 2008>, which was edited by Mr. Dedkov. In the preface to this book, Dedkov explains that he chose the year 2008 for publication because it would celebrate the 100 year anniversary of his grandfather's birth. In addition, the preface states that the source material for the book is a combination of personal papers collected by Andris Fride's father, Janis Fride (a friend of Petrovs'), and the handwritten memoirs of Galina Petrov-Mathis. All of this material is currently in the hands of Mr. Dedkov. I suppose the puzzle is still not solved, if it ever will be- but we do know that Mr. Dedkov thinks his father was born in 1908. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <jfq> Family memories can be faulty, but then so can historical sources. The question probably won't be settled until somebody finds his birth certificate or some other equivalent document, which seems unlikely in view of Latvia's troubled political history. I remember for years Steinitz's birthdate was given as 1837 before the currently used 1836 was found to be correct. Odd to think he was a year older than Morphy! |
|
Jan-22-13
 | | jessicafischerqueen: And he indeed met Morphy, though they didn't play. I didn't know they were almost the same age. Ok in the documentary I will note that it's currently unknown whether <Petrovs> was born in 1907 or 1908. I will also make such a note in the bio page, though I'm going to leave the actual date box as 1908 since I personally believe that to be more likely, though it might be a coin toss. If I ever finish updating the bio, of course. |

 | | jessicafischerqueen: Ok I've got it like this now:
VLADIMIR PETROV
(born Sep-27-1908, died Aug-26-1943) Latvia
Vladimir Petrov (Latvian spelling- Vladimirs Petrovs) was born in Riga, Latvia, on 27th September 1908 (some sources say 1907). |

 | | Phony Benoni: <jfq> That looks good for now. If we get haunted by the Ghost of Gaige, it can be reconsidered. |
|
Jan-22-13
 | | jessicafischerqueen: Heh- I'm still not giving up. Dale Brandreth is on the case, and if he comes up with any new information he promised to let me know. Next project is to try to contact <Vladimir Dedkov> and ask him if he has his grandfather's birth certificate, or some other form of definitive proof. |

 | | OhioChessFan: It's incredible how intelligent people can buy into stupid conspiracy theories. <Tim Brown on Tuesday repeated his claim that former coach Bill Callahan sabotaged the Oakland Raiders' chances of winning Super Bowl XXXVII. Callahan responded on Tuesday night with a strongly worded statement in which he said he was defamed. > http://aol.sportingnews.com/nfl/sto... |

 | | WannaBe: You kidding me?! ARE you kidding me?!?! Mr. Tim Brown went to Notre Dame, so obviously, he's intelligent, and further obviously only someone of his smart-ness could have figured it out. All the other dumb-asses just read the play-book and follow the play-calling like a bunch of football players. (Why it took him so long to make the discovery and enlighten the rest of us, I don't know...) |
