Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

May-05-13  playground player: I took a wrong turn once, and my wife and I ended up in what looked like a fairly dangerous neighborhood. <Mrs. PGP> was quite on edge.

"What do we do if the car breaks down?" she asked.

"We probably find out just how good I am at judo," I said.

Happily for us the car did not break down and we were soon out of there. I doubt anyone knows enough judo to get out of that neighborhood without a car.

perfidious: <pgp> In 1994, took a day trip from #50 on that list (Philadelphia) to #27 (Baltimore) and got off at the wrong exit when heading back, winding up in #19 (Chester, Pa), with a few anxious moments before righting the ship.

This begats the question, does that mean counselors, coaches, (vice/assistant) principals, grounds keepers, and cafeteria workers, crossing guards are not laid off??

Phony Benoni: Sure, Travis. They'll be on the schedule next season.

If you're talking about the playoffs, I hope not. I picked the Blackhawks to win it all.

Phony Benoni: Now here's something you don't see every day.

1) Team sends four hitters to the plate in an inning.

2) All four strike out.

3) The team still manages to score a run.

perfidious: <Phony Benoni> Saw that last night and can still hardly believe it, not to mention Cobb's overall performance.

Just another night in baseball: two teams managed one hit each.

May-11-13  playground player: <Jim Bartle> Just to take a momentary break from baseball... What's the consensus, within the archeological community, on the age of Tiwanaku/Tiahuanaco? Have you ever been there? What did you think of it?
May-11-13  Jim Bartle: Yes, I've been there. Aside from a couple of things it's not too rxciying to look at. A couple of friends have studied there; I'll check it out.
May-11-13  Travis Bickle: Phony The Redwings pulled it out last night. ESPN analyst Barry Melrose has your Wings upsetting The Ducks in that series! Blackhawks vs Redwings!

Phony Benoni: <Travis> I dunno. All three wins have been in overtime after blowing third period leads. That's not a good track record.
May-11-13  Shams: <Phony Benoni> From your link:

<Cobb struck out Will Venable to start the third, but he uncorked a wild pitch that rolled to the backstop for strike three. That allowed Venable to reach first.>

So the pitcher gets credit for the strikeout even though the batter reaches base? Does that usually earn an error?

May-11-13  Jim Bartle: Pitcher definitely gets a K even if the runner reaches. I think a passed ball, a wild pitch or an error is assessed.

OhioChessFan: Off the top of my head, I can think of 4 scenarios. Ball gets by the catcher, wild pitch or passed ball. Catcher drops the ball, has a chance to throw the runner out at first and throws it away, error. Runner on second, strike three, ball isn't caught, runner on second heads for third, catcher unsuccessfully tries to throw him out, batter gets to first, fielder's choice.

Phony Benoni: <OCF> There's plenty of scenarios. If nothing else, the catcher could throw the ball wildly down the first base line after dropping the third strike and have the batter/runner circle the bases.

But it's just not likely. In fact, the Elias people say it was the first time in major league history that a pitcher has struck out every hitter sent to the plate in an inning, yet allowed a run.

OhioChessFan: <PB> I was referencing only the possible ways of a batter reaching with a strikeout. Yes, the idea of 4 strikeouts, only 4 batters, and a run scoring is amazing.

On a related note, I was at a game when a batter swung and missed a curveball in the dirt, which rolled away a few feet. The batter slowllllly walked back to the dugout, and all around me people were angrily yelling at him to run to first. Of course, that runner on first base was a complicating factor. ;)

WannaBe: Quick poll, which team have been the biggest disappointment, so far:

A. LA Dodgers
B. LA Angels
C. Toronto Blue Jays

May-11-13  Jim Bartle: Tiwanaku was built in the 4th century AD and lasted about a thousand years. It's one of the most important pre-Inca sites.

Phony Benoni: <Shams> <JB> If a third strike is not caught and the batter reaches base, it is a strikeout plus a passed ball or wild pitch as appropriate. No error is charged on that part of the play.

WannaBe: Further info, if the catcher throws to first, and the throw is wild, or the first baseman drops the ball, it's an error, E2 or E3.

Further, if it is a ruled a pass ball, the runner later scores, it is an unearned run. Because it is not the pitcher's fault.

If it is ruled a wild pitch, and the batter/runner later scores, it is an earned run.
