Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

May-27-13  Jim Bartle: No, there were still only two outs and the ball was still in play.

However the actions of the man on third could certainly be altered if there were one or two outs. For example, with two outs he would be much more likely to take the risk of breaking for home.

Phony Benoni: I've heard of first basemen trying to deceive the umpire by pounding their fist into their glove before the ball gets there.

Smart of the pitcher to quickly huddle with the first baseman to make it appear they were exchanging the ball. But it was blatant enough--well, on replay at least--that you'd think one of the other umpires would have spotted it.

Great (last) name.

May-29-13  Jim Bartle: Watched World Series games from 68 and 69 (Gibson vs. McLain, Koosman vs. McNally). I knew there were differences from today's game, but it surprised me how much, both in the way the games were played and how they were broadcast.

1. No split-fingered fastballs, so no balls at knee height diving into the dirt. I didn't see any players swing at balls which bounced before reaching the catcher.

2. Lots more real curveballs. I liked that.

3. Batters hardly stepped out between pitches. I liked that.

4. Starters were supposed to go all the way unless they were knocked out or had to be pinch hit for. McNally was pinch hit for in the 69 game when he'd only given up three runs, but the Mets were starting to hit him.

5. Clearly higher strike zone, in 69 as well as 68. McLain seemed to throw most strikes above the waist.

6. No manager visits to the mound, though I suspect that was just by chance.

7. It seemed batters swung at more pitches, didn't try to work the count much.

8. Almost all players were Americans, and a lot more American blacks than today. Very few Latin players.

In broadcasting:

1. Almost no graphics on the screen, and the score and inning were not put up all the time.

2. Almost no replays, and none in slow motion.

3. No ex-players as announcers. It was Curt Gowdy plus an announcer from one of the teams (Harry Caray, Lindsey Nelson). Ex-player Tony Kubek was wandering the stands interviewing famous people.

4. No mention of pitch counts or the speed of pitches.

5. Very little analysis of pitch selection or execution.

Thanks, fascinating. Where/how did you watch the games?

May-30-13  Jim Bartle: Game 1, 1968 Series: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gR7m...

Game 5, 1969 Series: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbCW...

Lots of games at MLBClassics on Youtube.

Another big difference from today: definition of check swings, which I thought had changed over the years. There are check swings in these games where the bat is pointed at the pitcher and it's still called "no swing," while today it's a strike if the bat crosses the entire plate.

May-31-13  Travis Bickle: By the way Phony, Miguel Cabrera is a Monster hitter! How do the Tigers organization find studs like that? The Cubs brass are clueless. Maybe that's why their attendance is down over 4,000 people per game from last year. The Cubs Sox series only drew 30,000 the last game . In the past that was 45,000+. People are tired of this 45 year rebuilding program. ; P

Phony Benoni: Hey, Travis, the Tigers got Cabrera in a steal that may yet make fans forget John Smoltz for Doyle Alexander.

They traded Cameron Maybin, Andrew Miller, Eulogio de la Cruz, Mike Rabelo, Burke Badenhop and Dallas Trahern to the Marlins for Cabrera. Even getting stuck with Dontrelle Willis doesn't detract from that deal.

C. 4 intentional walks (Barry Bonds)

D. 12 RBI (Jim Bottomley, Mark Whiten)

E. 19 total bases (Shawn Green)

Phony Benoni: Just to be different, I'll say hits. Even with pitch counts, we'll probably see another 20K game before another 7-hit game.

By the way, a couple of odd things about Wilbert Robinson's seven-hit games. He drove in 11 runs, which might be expected. The really strange thing is that he was batting 8th, just like Tony Lazzeri in his two grand-slam game/11 RBI game.
