Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

WannaBe: <Jim Bartle: ...Wood hit the umpire in the mask with a blazing fastball on the first pitch of the game. That'll wake you up.>

Maybe that's why he was calling a big strike zone, didn't want to get hit again. =))

Jun-07-13  Jim Bartle: Some of you have probably seen this, but here's a pitcher hitting an ump on the mask, the catcher making no attempt to catch it. Really nasty. I'd like to know how this turned out.

WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> It looks the pitcher-catcher planned it, but a runner did take third on the WP/PB, but we do not know the score of the game.
Jun-08-13  Jim Bartle: I read a little about it. It was a high school championship in Georgia, and it caused a big scandal. They were losing 8-1 and ended up losing 13-1, and claimed the catcher was expecting a curve but the pitcher threw a fastball. Ludicrous as I see it.

Here's the 2006 games:

Jun-10-13  Jim Bartle: In the 1952 Series game I watched at least some of the players left their gloves on the field when the team came in to bat. I don't remember ever seeing that when I started following baseball. When did it end?

The Yankees lineup had Rizzuto, Mantle, Mize and Berra batting in order. Four Hall of Famers. Aside from the Reds in the 70s, I don't think of any others who did this. Maybe the Yankees in the 20s or 30s.

Jun-11-13  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, what do you know about those Bruins? I know they have a giant defenseman named Chara.
Jun-11-13  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, I'm playing an email game. I have the black pieces. I'm going against The London System 1. d4 Nf6 2. Nf3 g6 3. Bf4 Bg7. I've looked through a number of games on Chessgames, some play a Kings Indian but some masters play c5 which takes me into unchartered waters. I figured a Benoni player like you might have some advice. ; P

Phony Benoni: <Travis> I have to admit I know nothing about the Bruins, except that they won the Cup a few years ago and are obviously a tough team judging from the way they handled Pittsburgh. But I have the impression that the Penguins are more of a one-man show than the Blackhawks.

And, seriously, I can give you no advice on handling the London System. All I can say is that you're probably not going to get killed as quickly as in sharper openings.

White may have some tricks after ...c5, like playing c3 to threaten Bxb8 and Qa4+, winning the a-pawn. But those are just tricks. I would think that ...c5 could lead to play pressuring White's center, and the ♗g7 could well assist in this. But don't quote me.

perfidious: <Phony Benoni>: Penguins actually have two great players, Evgeny Malkin being the other.

Blackhawks are better balanced; while not as strong offensively as Pittsburgh, they have plenty of depth up front and on defence, where Penguins did not play so well.

This Bruins fan sez: Blackhawks in six.

perfidious: <Phony Benoni:....it's always a sop to the ego when you lose to the eventual champions--especially when you had them on the ropes.>

In my only serious game with Igor Ivanov, played in the 1982 Greater Boston Open, I managed to get a good position as Black in a Tartakower QGD, but couldn't quite land a knockout blow.

In a Boston Globe chess column soon after, Harold Dondis wrote, to my amusement, that I was the only one of Ivanov's opponents to give him any trouble (excluding, of course, the obligatory quick draw he took with the Dzhin on the way to their sharing first place).

Jun-12-13  TheFocus: I remember when Igor was a powerhouse, playing everywhere.

I remember watching him and Boris Kogan play to a draw in a Swiss in Georgia or Florida. An exciting duel that is not in the database.

perfidious: <TheFocus> No doubt, same as many other games from the '80s and '90s, before the advent of massive game DBs.

Have tried to rectify that a little, but it will take time.

Jun-12-13  Jim Bartle: At least one error in the story: the Dodgers haven't played 66 years in LA. I'd say 55.

Phony Benoni: <JB> I'd make it 56, counting this year; they started in 1958.

The game that really impressed me was the Pirates going 0 for 19 with runners in scoring position--in a nine-inning game. That is not easy.

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

They finally got a run in the ninth on a double and two groundouts. Then they promptly got another runner into scoring position and stranded him.
