Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: I think MLB is trying to justify high ticket prices by playing more innings, encouragingi fans to think they're getting more baseball for the buck. Blackhawks and Bruins seem to have the same idea.

I can see the idea spreading. Next time you fly from San Francisco to Los Angeles, they'll take you to Peru instead for the same price. Such a deal!

WannaBe: I get to go and visit <Jim Bartle>?? I'm IN, IN, IN, IN. (As in Inca =))
Jun-13-13  Jim Bartle: Hockey question: How do teams make substitutions while play is going on? Doesn't the other team take advantage of the shortage of defenders for a moment?

You never see the change on TV, so I can't figure it out.

WannaBe: <Jim Bartle> Teams change on the fly, since hockey only play 3 periods, instead of 4 qtrs, the away team always gets the 'shorter side'. (2 periods, in which they skate farther to their defensive goal-post)

The teams change players on the fly, but the player(s) must be within certain distance away from the bench, before the replacement(s) can go onto ice.

If you are too slow to come off, or your mate is too early, you get "Too Many Men on Ice" penalty.

Hockey, much as baseball, are much more enjoyable in person, you get to see so much more than TV shows.

Jun-13-13  Jim Bartle: I went to Seals games back when they were in Oakland (saw them lose 9-0 to the Orr/Esposito Bruins) and you're absolutely right. A game in person is completely different than on TV. You can feel (and hear) the speed and the hitting. A different game.

I still don't see how they get away with so many line changes on the fly. In fact the announcers often say a goal was scored because they caught the other team on a line change.

High-quality soccer is the same. You can see the offensive and defensive schemes clearly, which you can't on TV, and you can appreciate how hard the guys run on the attack and to get back on defense.

OhioChessFan: I've never understood the team with the puck giving it up with a dump in to the corner to make a line change. The other side likewise gets to change lines, and gets the puck for nothing in the process. I've run that by a few hard core hockey fans who can't quite explain it to me and usually end by saying "You just don't understand." And I don't.
Jun-13-13  Jim Bartle: Boy, did Chicago have a fluke goal last night. A long shot was well wide, and it ricocheted perfectly off a defenseman's skate and into the net.
Jun-14-13  Travis Bickle: JB, former player & professional hockey analyst Barry Melrose said in OT games especially triple overtime games almost always ugly or fluke goals win the game. Mainly because the players are so tired.
Jun-14-13  Jim Bartle: That could be true. The winning goal was unbelievably deflected by two Chicago players on the way to the goal.

The goal I mentioned was in the third period, though.

Jun-14-13  Travis Bickle: Yeah Jim it was all luck! Just like The Cubs are so lucky!

Well, if you want a line change, the main alternative is having a couple of defencemen circle around with the puck in your defensive zone, which means that a) you don't get to change your defencemen and b) if they get in trouble they'll do so right next to your goal, rather than at the other side of the rink. (And here too, the other team can change lines with minimal risk.) It has its advantages - if all goes well, you keep the puck - but it isn't a brilliant solution either.

If there's a really good way to change lines on the fly, nobody's discovered it yet.

WannaBe: Have your goalie skate down the ice with the puck while the other 5 changes on the fly.

In the NHL, much like NFL, you can't even breath on the goalie, perfect player to have the puck.

Jun-14-13  Jim Bartle: What about just flipping the puck into the crowd? I assume they're able to do that. Or is that not allowed?

Phony Benoni: <Jim Bartle> Flipping the puck into the crowd is a two-minute penalty for delay of game, a $15 fine to replace the puck, and loss of Zamboni privileges for the remainder of the game.

OK, maybe one out of three.

Jun-14-13  technical draw: Loss of Zamboni? Say it ain't so!
Jun-15-13  Travis Bickle: Hey Mr Benoni, do you have your cooler stocked up with cold ones & did you remember to get the pretzels for when they drop the puck tonight? ; P
