Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Amazingly, he got beat on a home run by Ron Hunt. Even more amazing is that Hunt, a specialist in getting hit by pitches, struck out instead of getting plonked his next time up.

Of course, Gibson may have had too much disdain for Hunt to bother hitting him. Or maybe hunt took his at-bat from the on-deck circule to be on the safe side.

Sep-17-13  Jim Bartle: Tim McCarver was doing a game the other night, and the other announcer asked what he said to Gibson when he went to the mound. McCarver said, "I never once went out to the mound to talk to Gibson."

Hunt was traded to the Giants by the Dodgers for Tom Haller, I think the first ever trade between SF and LA, and probably the last for years.

Sep-18-13  talisman: <WannaBe> Jim Bunning is one. <Jim Bartle> McCarver said you stayed away from him on game day. Gibson: "McCarver would come out and say you got a man on second. Well SH** I know I know I got a man on second I put him there!" move ya off the plate too.

perfidious: <playground player: <Esteemed Colleagues> Can anyone explain to me why the NY Jets acquired Tim Tebow as a backup quarterback and then refused to use him when their first-string QB came a cropper? It doesn't make any sense to me at all.>

Apologies for the belated response, but this is the first I have seen of this post from last season.

<Shams> and <OCF> were probably correct: Woody Johnson most likely wanted to knock Government Issue Ants off the back page of the NY Post and Daily News and this was the way home.

As to why Patriots signed him during the recent offseason, my theory is that Bill Belichick's ego got rather the better of him again.

Such appears to be Belichick's view of his own football acumen that he believes he can fit the square peg in the round hole, every single time. IIRC, most NFL personnel men (who, presumably, know a thing or three on what it takes to make a successful player) felt Tebow had little or no chance of success at the NFL level.

Phony Benoni: It wasn't a force play, so the player on third was entitled to the base For the runner from first, being on third base was no safer than being between bases.

However, if the runner from third had be tagged out first, the runner on first would have been safe.

The real blunder is that of the runner from third; had he been on the base, there would have been only one out.

The guy on first played it right. Had the guy from third done his part, one of them would have been safe at third.

Sep-20-13  Jim Bartle: Let me understand, though the ruling must have been right because there wasn't much argument.

The lead runner was tagged out between third and home. Whether he was sliding into home or caught off third doesn't matter.

Meanwhile the other runner took third, which seems legal, yet he was tagged out standing on the base.

I guess the key was the fielder tagged the guy standing on the base before he tagged the runner off the base.

Phony Benoni: If I'm reading the play correctly this is what happened:

Runner on third (call him Abbott) is caught between third and home in a rundown.

Runner from first (call him Hardy) advances all the way to third base during the rundown, and as standing on the base.

Abbott is able to avoid being tagged, falling down near third base. Fielder then tags Hardy, who is out because he is not entitled to third base, even though Abbott is not touching it.

Felder then tags Abbott, who still isn't touching third.

So it was all Abbott's fault. Once Hardy reached third, he had to either give himself up or make sure he got back to third. Defense gets one out for sure, but offense is left with a runner on third--and, if the batter is alert, one on second as well.

Sep-20-13  Jim Bartle: It's a very odd situation, but the umpire seemed to be right on it. I can just imagine Earl Weaver charging out if he'd got it wrong.

So if a runner on third has not crossed home plate, then third base is his (no force), and the other runner is not safe (protected) standing on third. But I Don't Know had to tag Costello first, or he would have been safe.

Sep-21-13  Jim Bartle: Confusing game for 49ers fans for Indianapolis gme tomorrow. There's a huge overlap between 49er fans and Stanford fans (in addition to being nearby, Stanford also has sent the Niners their two most successful coaches), and they'll be playing against three-year Stanford hero Andrew Luck tomorrow.

Phony Benoni: Well, our Long National Capital Nightmare is over. Now Detroit goes on lockdown for a week with the Bears coming over and Travis in town for a week. Then the Lions go to Green Bay, where they play every year and haven't won since the Bush administration.

And I ain't talking "W" here. To put it another way, Bret Favre never lost a home game to the Lions as a member of the Packers.

Sep-23-13  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony, since The Bears get to play The Lions, Former Bear DT Steve "Mongo" McMichael from ESPN Radio 1000 will be in town and ex Bear DT Dan Hampton from SportsNet television will show up to cover the game.
