Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> To be exact, 1991. George Herbert Walker Bush.

<Travis> That is a generous offer, in keeping with your usual nature. But I'll have to give it a pass. In the first place I must admit, much to my shame, that I don't like beer. (And since I couldn't drink it to impress a girlfriend, you'll realize how deep the distaste is.)

But more importantly, I tend to laugh scornfully at Bears functions, and this is not a good idea. I already have two doctor appointments this week, and have no wish to make it a trifecta.

WannaBe: Well, NL play-off teams are determined, certain seeding positions are to be announced.

AL's final chase could be interesting. I think Detroit will clinch Central, but the Wild Card can get, will, wild.

Damn!

In other news, the Dolphins are undefeated, even though they have played three entire games.

Next week is Monday Night in the Superdome. Oh well.

Sep-24-13  Jim Bartle: I see Marge's catch is no longer there: here's another try:

Sep-24-13  Shams: <keypusher> Don't manage expectations! They just beat two playoff teams in a row. Dolphins can totally steal one in New Orleans.

I don't understand how they got good all of a sudden. I was hoping they'd tank so Jeff Ireland would get fired, but that's small potatoes. It's about time somebody else stepped up in that division though, I think all of America outside of Boston can agree.

OhioChessFan: No question it was a hit, but really a shame. It's interesting to me to note that it's usually the Cardinals who get those type of hits. I've seen them beat my Reds with swinging bunts, bloops, and 50 bouncers through a hole in the infield, and it's infuriating. I know earlier this year, they were leading the league in BABIP and I was only surprised it wasn't higher.

Well, Tannehill has been genuinely good, from below average in 2012 (though good for a rookie in any year in which Wilson, Luck, and Griffin weren't lighting it up) to upper echelon so far (though he is getting hit so much it is hard believe he'll make it through the season). They've had a good pass rush (they actually got no sacks against Atlanta, but decent pressure). Their corners have been better (so far) than anyone had a right to expect. They were called for a total of two penalties in their last two games combined. They have a great punter and a terrific rookie placekicker. So far, the aggregate of all these things has overcome a terrible offensive line and a feeble running game.

They're also a couple of plays away from 1-2. Last year they lost at Indy 23-20, this year they won 24-20. Those games weren't very different, but one was a win and one was a loss. The distance between a 7-9 team and a 3-0 team with a couple of close wins may not be very great.

NO is going to kill them, though. Soliai and Wake will probably both be out, with very bad implications for run and pass defense.

Sep-25-13  Jim Bartle: Reminds me of the Dodgers of the mid-60s. Dodger Stadium had a rock-hard infield and distant fences, and they (Wills, Willie Davis, Lou Johnson, Gilliam, Lefebvre, Fairly) got all these high-bouncer infield hits, dribblers through the infield, etc. drove me nuts. Their home run leader one year they won the pennant had 13.

They did have good pitchers, though.

Sep-25-13  Deus Ex Alekhina: Detroit Lions receiver Nate Burleson out for the rest of the season with broken arm. How did he break his arm? Pizza!
