Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Another one for you King Hunters. Black's monarch travels fron g8 to b8, then takes the Great Circle Route back to h3 before calling it a day.

   Jun-10-22 L T Magee vs E L Holland, 1948 (replies)

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

   Jun-06-22 W Ritson-Morry vs G T Crown, 1947

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Sep-25-13  Jim Bartle: Before I start, this is teams, not cities, right? For example, I'm pretty sure the NY Giants most beloved player is Willie Mays. But the SF Giants' most beloved is Willie McCovey, hands down.

OhioChessFan: Ummmmmmmmmmmmm. I won't answer that.
Sep-25-13  Jim Bartle: Damn computer won't open the pictures for me.

My guesses, roughly east to west, definite bias toward more recent players:

Seattle: Griffey
NY/SF: Mays, McCovey
Phil./KC/Oakland: Foxx, Campaneris, Hunter (don't tell me Reggie) Brooklyn/LA: Hodges, Koufax
Angels: Ryan
SD: Gwynn
Arizona: Grace
Colorado: Helton
KC: Brett
St. L.: Musial
Houston: Bagwell
Washington/Twins: Walter Johnson, Puckett or Hrbek
Washington/Texas: Frank Howard, Ryan
Cubs: Banks
White Sox: Joe Jackson (just kidding)--Thomas
Brewers: Yount
Detroit: Kaline
Milwaukee/Atlanta: Aaron
Cleveland: Speaker
Cincinnati: Rose
Pittsburgh: Clemente
Philadelphia: Schmidt
Baltimore: Ripken, or Brooks Robinson
Yankees: DiMaggio, or Gehrig
Mets: Seaver
Boston: Yastrzemski (edges out Buckner)
Montreal/Washington: Raines
Toronto: Molitor
Marlins and Rays: vacant

OhioChessFan: Well, we had 7 wrong answers the same. You will not believe some of them.
Sep-25-13  Jim Bartle: Ok, the ones I think are correct of the double picks (not necessarily the ones I think were chosen):

A's: Hunter
Giants: Mays
Dodgers: Koufax
Twins: Puckett
Texas: Ryan
Baltimore: Brooks
Yankees: DiMaggio

OhioChessFan: I put the answers on my forum and will list them here soon.
Sep-25-13  Jim Bartle: I agree with you on most, though the Seattle one may be right. Some are downright ridiculous.

OhioChessFan: We incorrectly agreed on Seattle, Angels, Astros, Cubs, Braves, Phillies, and Red Sox. Wayyyyyy too much weight given to broadcasting careers.

OhioChessFan: I had Ryan for the Angels and Rangers. If Babe Ruth isn't the most beloved sports figure in history, I don't know who is. And he wasn't picked for most beloved on his own team?! Not picking Banks was pathetic, ditto Aaron, Yaz and Schmidt not quite as bad nonpicks, Salmon over Ryan a little less bad.
Sep-25-13  Jim Bartle: I took that into account a little, though it's silly. Plus early 20th century players get short shrift, when baseball was probably more popular.

Braves, Yankees, Red Sox, Phillies, Cubs, A's picks are just wrong. Toronto probably, too.

OhioChessFan: I had Henderson for the A's. I likewise couldn't come up with a pick for the Marlins and Rays.
Sep-25-13  Jim Bartle: I just don't think Rickey was that popular, though his eccentricities were fun. But people loved Hunter. Sal Bando was also very popular.

OhioChessFan: I could have seen Foxx on that one.
Sep-25-13  Jim Bartle: Every single player selected played for that team only in its current city, with the exception of Mays, who played mostly in SF. That tells me players like Walter Johnson, Speaker, Grove, Foxx, Raines, Mathewson, etc. had no chance.

Yogi Berra was certainly popular, and talked to fans when he played the outfield. But compared to outright legends like Gehrig, Ruth, DiMaggio, Mantle? Even Jeter and Rivera today?

WannaBe: Congrats, Tigers have clinched the Central!
Sep-26-13  Jim Bartle: Here's something I've never seen--a catcher not letting a batter finish his home run trot. And I don't blame him.

Sep-26-13  Shams: <JB> Once again baseball's rules of etiquette confound me. So Gomez is a classless jerk; who cares? Isn't that Ty Cobb on a good day?
Sep-26-13  Jim Bartle: I know what you mean. The Braves had reason to be upset, but I shouldn't have said it was right to stop him from touching home.

Braves should have said, "There are a hundred people here who saw you hit that. Hope you enjoy watching us on TV in October."

Sep-26-13  Shams: <JB> Yes the crowd did look awfully sparse for a playoff team! Meanwhile the Tampa Bay Devil Rays (I prefer the old name) lead the AL wild card race and are last in the majors in attendance.
Sep-26-13  Jim Bartle: I thought that game was in Milwaukee. My mistake.

I wouldn't go to a game in Tampa either. So many beautiful stadiums in baseball, and they play in a warehouse on artificial turf.

perfidious: <Jim>: If I ever visit Pittsburgh, that's one park I will not fail to see-I have heard nothing but positive things regarding PNC Park. They even have a decent team playing these days.
Sep-26-13  Jim Bartle: Looks great on TV. A bridge in the background and long homers to right land in the river.
Sep-26-13  Shams: <perfidious>, <JB> Speaking of PNC park, here's a classic from the Onion: http://www.theonion.com/articles/pn...
