| Oct-30-13 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni et al> Quickly, here's my all-star team for the 1970s. C-Johnny Bench
1B-Willie Stargell
2B-Joe Morgan
SS-Larry Bowa (Who? think about it)
3B-Mike Schmidt (beating out George Brett)
LF-Billy Williams
RF-Reggie Jackson
CF-Bobby Bonds (Yes, I know he usually played RF. But he did play some CF, and I couldn't see an All-Seventies team without him.) The big question for the 1980s team is, who's at shortstop--Cal Ripken Jr. or Ozzie Smith? |
|
Oct-30-13
 | | Phony Benoni: Don't think there's a big argument about Bench and Morgan. And I'd take Schmidt at third; he had defensive skills that Brett lacked. I can see the argument for Bowa, but there has to be somebody else to at least talk about. |
|
| Oct-30-13 | | Jim Bartle: I'd put Concepcion at shortstop and anybody else in centerfield, maybe Garry Maddox or Amos Otis. Otherwise looks good, though really Pete Rose has to be in there somewhere. RH starter would be Seaver over Palmer, and the LH starter Carlton. Reliever could be Fingers or Sutter. |
|
| Oct-30-13 | | playground player: <Jim Bartle> I took a long time deciding on the pitchers. The 1970s had an awful lot of great pitching. But I finally went with: LHP-Steve Carlton (Jim Kaat a close second, and Ron Guidry a sentimental favorite) RHP-Tom Seaver (with good arguments to be made for Gaylord Perry, Nolan Ryan, Jim Palmer, and others) RP-Sparky Lyle (Yes, Fingers and Sutter were great; but Lyle won a Cy Young Award, first reliever to do it--and having seen so much of him with the Yankees, it's hard to imagine anyone doing a better job) |
|
Oct-30-13
 | | perfidious: Concepcion at short and Otis as the CF look reasonable to me-I also go with Schmidt over Brett at third. What a decade for third basemen, even with Brooks Robinson fading from view; Brett, Schmidt, Buddy Bell, Doug DeCinces and Graig Nettles all showed the goods. LHP-Carlton, without a doubt.
RHP-Seaver over Palmer, though not by as much. |
|
| Oct-30-13 | | Jim Bartle: Darrell Evans was also a good third baseman, though not as good as those mentioned. Same with Bill Madlock. |
|
Oct-30-13
 | | perfidious: <Jim>: Bill James was higher on Evans than many, and I suspect more than a few pundits passed him by because of his low batting average. As for me, I will take the excellent defence, ability to draw walks and power over the one shortcoming. Madlock was great, if hitting for average and being hung up on that statistic were the criteria which mattered. |
|
| Oct-30-13 | | hangingenprise: phony: my dad, being from Detroit beaconfield, I am partial to teams
from Detroit. that is why Stafford
makes the big bucks!
with the talent the lions have they
seem inconsistent. the coaching is
is fine, but the team seems to play
to the level of the teams they face.
I am sure your pal travis will be back. |

 | | chancho: Boston!!
Woohooooo!!! |
|
| Oct-31-13 | | technical draw: Well El Predicto picked St. louis to win the world series but Boston won instead. What does that mean? Somebody cheated. El Predicto never fails so some external force was operating here. Being that the case no bets will be paid until further investigation. OK, congrats to Boston and cheers to MVP David "Big Papi" Ortiz. |

 | | WannaBe: <technical draw> Remind me to ask you who will win the Super Bowl. The Saturday before the game is played. =) |
|
| Oct-31-13 | | technical draw: <WannaBe> I don't know anything about predictions but my friend "El Predicto" does. I'll just say it's a favor for me. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <WannaBe> You got a problem with that? Hooligans playing fast and loose with tax-payers dollars, and y9u expect librarians to stand timidly by nibbling at bagels and drinking green tea? Just remember this: every replacement copy of a stolen GED manual represents one less chess book the Library can buy. Makes more sense now, doesn't it? |

 | | chancho: <Jim Bartle: Sox in six is now the least likely of the five remaining
possibilities.>
Oh really?
Just teasing, Jim.
:-) |
|
| Nov-02-13 | | Jim Bartle: Well, it was the least likely by the coin flip method. Least likely but still possible. |

 | | perfidious: Barry Zito gets $7m to not play for Giants: http://www.cbssports.com/mlb/eye-on... We should all find our opportunities so abundant. Hope SF are happy with what they got for $133m over seven years. |

Nov-04-13
 | | Phony Benoni: Tigers have hired Brad Ausmus as their new manager. Local reaction skeptical due to his total lack of managerial experience. He was a respected team leader as a catcher, but this is a different deal. He is keeping current bench coach Gene Lamont. Some are comparing him to Mike Matheny in St. Louis, but the situation is totally different. Matheny had been a special coach with the team for several years before getting the job; Ausmus has no connection with the current Tigers. Some of our local sports talk firebrands really wanted Ozzie Guillen. He'd would have made their jobs more interesting, but that was never going to happen with this organization. |
|
Nov-04-13
 | | perfidious: <PB>: Three years for Ausmus was surprising to me. |
|
Nov-05-13
 | | Phony Benoni: <perfidious> In Detroit, we aren't so hard on managers, at least not most of the time. There won't be talk of firing Ausmus until at least Memorial Day. Leyland has left him a very good situation: a stable clubhouse where the superstars are self-motivated and hard working rather than prima donnas. If he can just keep that atmosphere, he'll do fine. But easier said than done. |
|
| Nov-05-13 | | Travis Bickle: Hello Mr Benoni, how have you been sir? The Bears pulled off a Miracle last night in Cheeserland! Now we have to play The Lions. Are they any good? ; P I said to a pal before the game the only chance we have is if the Bears break Aaron Rodgers neck! Well DE Shea McClellin sacked Jolly Rodgers on his head and broke his collarbone, close enough! Now you owe us Bears a favor for knocking out the Cheesehead city's QB when you're Lions play them 4 weeks from now. How about a swap of Devin Hester for Ndamukong Suh? ; P |
|
| Nov-05-13 | | Jim Bartle: I was surprised at how bulky Julius Peppers looked. I remember him as tall and powerful, but much more svelte. Nice interception. |
|
| Nov-05-13 | | Travis Bickle: <Jim Bartle> Yes Jim, Peppers has great agility for a big man but unfortunately
The Bears couldn't move the ball & on that series got the punt blocked! : 0 |
