Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Hi, Travis, figured you'd be back!

Right now they're saying three weeks for Rodgers which means he just might be back for the Thanksgiving Day game in Detroit. I hope so. It won't be as much fun beating up Zeke Bartkowski.

In any event, this game will be a big one toward the fate of the Division. Right now the big question is whether Jay Cutler will be back. If his groin injury makes him run like Miguel Cabrera, it could be ugly.

You never know how the Lions will react to big games. Will they be inspired or fall flat on their faces? On the road in Chicago, I fear Bickle's Beasts will pull this one out.

Nov-05-13  Jim Bartle: There was an interesting punt block in one game on Sunday, and the Spanish-language announcers said it should have been roughing because the rusher never touched the ball, just the punter.

But the rusher actually hit the punter just before he kicked the ball; he kicked it weakly beneath the rusher. It's legal to tackle a punter, right?

Phony Benoni: <JB> Don't have a rule book handy, but that sounds right. Kicker fouls occur after the ball is kicked, provided it is not blocked in any way.

The idea, supposedly, is to protect the defenseless punter from injury. But a punter whose kick has been blocked is just as defenseless. Why does he not received the same protection?

perfidious: <PB>: Bet local talk show types everywhere would love dealing with Guillen from day to day. Hard to see him getting another shot in MLB right now; but maybe he could go to the minors and earn one more try, so long as his ego did not get in the way.
Nov-05-13  Jim Bartle: I didn't even know there are any Bears-Packers marriages:

Phony Benoni: Wow. If that doesn't lure Travis back to Wrigley, nothing will!
Nov-07-13  playground player: <Esteemed Colleagues> My 1980s All-Star team, sure to generate disagreements.

C-Carlton Fisk. Hard to pick him over Gary Carter, but I did it.

1B-Don Mattingly

2B-Ryne Sandberg

SS-Cal Ripken Jr. I found it hard to pick him over Ozzie Smith--maybe because Ozzie once sent a birthday card to <Mrs. PGP>.

3B-George Brett. Mike Schmidt's best years were in the 1970s, although some would take him at 3B for both decades: a rare tribute to a great player.

LF-Ricky Henderson

CF-Robin Yount (over Kirby Puckett) I will accept votes for Dale Murphy.

RF-Dave Winfield

RHP-Dwight Gooden. This guy was in a class by himself until he self-destructed.

LHP-Ron Guidry

RP-Dennis Eckersley

Is Roger Clemens conspicuous by his absence? Well, I don't recognize "greatness" achieved by chemical enhancement.

Nov-07-13  Jim Bartle: A good list. All the best players were mentioned. I guess we can give Brett 3B, since Schmidt was the man for the 70s. I think Schmidt was better, though.

And then there's Wade Boggs to consider...

Clearly no dominant lefthander through the decade. Carlton was great for the first five years, then (finnally) faded. Still I think John Tudor or Tommy John might be the best, as Guidry wasn't so consistent.

WannaBe: '80s all star team? '81 and '88 Dodgers, end of story. =))

Big game tonight in the Bay Area, (Peking) Ducks at Trees.

Nov-07-13  Jim Bartle: Only half credit for the '81 team.
Nov-07-13  Deus Ex Alekhina: Hey, Phony, can I rely upon your encyclopedic memory for a sec? Do you know the article in Michigan Chess about 35 years ago in which a member details his visit to a Michigan prison as part of the Prison Chess Project? It's possible that you, too, were on one of those visits over the years. Over on Kibitzer's Cafe <alicelott> is writing about prison which involves a chess game. She also wanted a short game in descriptive notation to use in the story. You might be able to help her on both counts.

WannaBe: Wow, Trees are putting up a wuppin' on the (Duck) Pate.
Nov-07-13  Jim Bartle: Only the first half. A couple of years ago they wre leading Oregon 31-14 in the second quarter and I think they ended up losing 55-31.

Stanford has found they can run the ball right up the midle, so they've run 30 times vs. 10 passes. Plus even Stanford announcers say they got breaks on a couple of referee's calls.

WannaBe: Pass inteference, bad call, the ball was thrown to the wrong side of the receiver.

Fumble by Oregon (at the 4 yard line) the runner was down. Another bad call.

But them Trees have absolutely out played them (Peking) Ducks.

Or, alternatively.,.

Obviously, the Ducks were not Peking for this game.

Nov-08-13  Jim Bartle: I checked out a book which said it's your birthday. (Checked it out in 1973, have to return it some day.)

So Happy Birthday!

Nov-08-13  Jim Bartle: It's great that Stanford is finally winning. But it's not really as much fun as the old days, since theyre winning with smashmouth, run-up-the-middle football powered by 300-pound linemen.

This is the sort of football we used to ridicule when Michigan and Ohio State played that way, and the smaller, mistake-prone Stanford teams tried to keep up with great passers and receivers, and overachieving defenders.

OhioChessFan: Whereas it did my heart good to see Woody Hayes football played.
Nov-08-13  Jim Bartle: Not me. Maybe it just depends on where you were raised.

We on the West Coast used to laugh when the Michigan-Ohio State game was built up into this battle between the giants of college football, the titanic struggle between the very best.

Then every year of the Woody and Bo era the winner would come out to the Rose Bowl and lose to the Pac-10 champion, teams that had learned it was legal to throw the ball forward through the air. In the 11 years when Woody and Bo both coached, the Big 10 won one Rose Bowl and the Pac-10 the other ten.
