See this re the economics of Stanford's football success. http://online.wsj.com/news/articles... Relatedly, Stanford has a $17 billion endowment.
Here are the endowments of some large colleges for comparison. Penn State $1,780 million
Tulane U. $961 million
Rutgers $694 million
U. of Arizona $563 million
Arizona St. $500 million
Florida St. $498 million
Being a Silicon Valley nursery helps. |

 | | WannaBe: It's Mr. Moody's boithday?!?!
Happy birthday <Phony>!! |
|
Nov-08-13
 | | keypusher: I started watching football in the 70s, when the Dolphins and Steelers would have 50 runs and 10 passes. Thought that was the way it should be. Damn you Teddy Roosevelt! You ruined the game. |
|
| Nov-08-13 | | Jim Bartle: But that running was more dynamic. Plus those teams had Griese and Bradshaw, Warfield, Swann and Stallworth. Great threats so the defenses couldn't pack it in the way those Big 10 defenses could. The Michigan and Ohio State attempts to pass when they fell behind at the two Rose Bowls I attended were really poor. |
|
| Nov-08-13 | | playground player: <Phony Benoni> Happy Birthday! Gee, you have the same birthday as <Mrs. PGP>. I gave her a scary video, <A Warning to the Curious>. My present to you is my 1950s All-Star team.
C-Yogi Berra (narrowly over Roy Campanella, who was loved in my house even though he was a Dodger) 3B-Eddie Matthews
SS-Ernie Banks
2B-Jackie Robinson (yes, he played other positions--but who else would you want?) 1B-Stan Musial (over my personal favorite, Ted Kluzewski) CF-Willie Mays
LF-Mickey Mantle
RF-Duke Snider (Yes, I know they were all three center fielders, all playing in NY. But to beat out that outfield, I think you'd have to go up on Olympus for Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and either Joe DiMaggio or Ted Williams.) RHP-Early Wynn
LHP-Warren Spahn (over Whitey Ford)
RP-Hoyt Wilhelm
Ah, them were the days...! |
|
| Nov-08-13 | | Jim Bartle: My knowledge of the 50s is mostly through reading and listening. But here is my team: C Berra
1B Musial
2B Robinson
SS Banks (but how good was Reese?)
3B Mathews
LF Williams
CF Mantle (Mays gets the 60s)
RF Aaron
LHP Spahn
RHP Robin Roberts (just to be difficult)
RP Wilhelm
Managers Stengel, Alston |

 | | Phony Benoni: <playground player> An alternative second baseman for the 50s would be Nellie Fox. Hard to pick Robinson, who hardly played the position once Junior Gilliam came to the team in 1953. |
|
| Nov-08-13 | | hangingenprise: happy birthday phony born the same year as karpov |
|
Nov-08-13
 | | Phony Benoni: <hangingenprise> Yes, Karpov was born in May. It's amazing how much that six months meant to our chess developments. |
|
| Nov-08-13 | | Jim Bartle: KP: That's another thing not so great about Stanford football, the incredible upgrade of the football facilities. (Facilities for secondary sports like swimming and tennis had been upgraded years before, which was fine. And believe it or not, the university has an outstanding golf course, which cost me a few tenths off my grade point average.) In my day... the football locker room was at Encino Gym, which was pleasant but far from luxurious. The pro teams coming to play the 49ers would be there for the week, and it was fun to see them when we went to play basketball. But whatever Stanford has done to upgrade is dwarfed by Nike U, I mean Oregon. |
|
| Nov-08-13 | | Jim Bartle: Yes, Nellie Fox was an excellent player. Probably the best Nellie ever to play baseball, and in the running for consistently biggest chaw, along with Harvey Kuenn and some others. The White Sox shortstop in that time wasn't bad either. |
|
| Nov-08-13 | | playground player: <Jim Bartle> I plead temporary insanity in passing by Robin Roberts for RHP. If we're restricting great players to one decade only, then who would you name to take Ted Williams' place on the 1940s team? |
|
| Nov-08-13 | | technical draw: I was in Chicago then and that shortstop was Luis Aparicio, |
|
| Nov-08-13 | | Jim Bartle: Sorry, I didn't mean to say a player could only be on one all-decade team, just that I wasn't intending to ignore Mays altogether. It must have been very close between Mays and Mantle in the 50s. As far as the 40s are concerned, if Williams isn't in left, it would have to be Musial then, though I guess he played right and first base as well. |
|
| Nov-08-13 | | Jim Bartle: Aparicio is a friend of a friend, and he's extremely proud to have been voted to the Hall of Fame by the writers. He says he came in the front door, while those guys elected by the Veterans Committee came in through the back door. Said with a smile, not maliciously, according to my friend. |
|
Nov-08-13
 | | perfidious: The Veterans Committee has foisted some idiosyncratic selections upon us: Enos Slaughter and Ross Youngs are two who come to mind. |
|
| Nov-08-13 | | Jim Bartle: I've always thought a Hall of Famer is a guy you se on the field after eight or ten years in the majors and you think, "There's an all-time great, there's a Hall of Famer.' Not for guys you look at after they're done and think, Hey, he was pretty good. There are exceptions, of course, but not too many. |
|
Nov-08-13
 | | Phony Benoni: Thanks to all for the good wishes. May all your favorite teams be so blessed. Yes, Travis, even the Bears. |
|
Nov-08-13
 | | WannaBe: <JB> sprung money, and became premium member? =)) |
|
| Nov-08-13 | | Jim Bartle: No. It's a mystery. |
|
| Nov-09-13 | | Deus Ex Alekhina: Thanks Dave for finding that article; you probably didn't even need to search for it, you have all that stuff in mind. And belated birthday wishes. BTW, the name "Benoni" is mentioned in the bible. |
|
| Nov-09-13 | | benjinathan: i WOULD BET ocf bought it for you |
|
Nov-09-13
 | | Phony Benoni: Yes, that Bible story is a tragedy. If Jacob had just honored Rachel's wishes, we could have had Grandmaster Joel Benoni. |
|
Nov-09-13
 | | Phony Benoni: Well, the best thing you can say about U-M's loss today was that their rushing attack was more than 50% better than last week. Today they were only -21 yards instead of -48. Seven more sacks. |
|
| Nov-09-13 | | Jim Bartle: Nebraska vs. Michigan just doesn't sound right, strange that they play each other. Too much change. |
