Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

OhioChessFan: <JB: Then I assume a runner who has crossed home plate has to touch home on the way back to third. If he's heading toward the dugout he can't run straight back to third.>

Upon further review...there may be an issue of abandoning the baseline if the player is headed back to the dugout. But that might bring in the issue of which dugout he's headed to. A straight line to the 1st base dugout and an about face to 3rd base dugout can't reasonably make a difference in whether he left the baseline. Thinking.....I don't know. If there is an issue of abandoning the baseline, I am pretty sure it'd apply to all bases, not just home.

Apr-11-14  Travis Bickle: Speaking of baselines, how about the brilliant Jimmy Piersall hitting a homerun & running the bases backwards! ; P

OhioChessFan: <Travel Backwards> I wonder if that would take one run off their score.
Apr-11-14  Jim Bartle: Sorry to ruin the story, but Piersall ran the bases backwards the way hockey defensemen skate backwards. He still ran the bases in the proper order.

On a related note, David Ortiz just broke the "record" for slowest home run trot. I assume trots were not being recorded when Jeffrey Leonard was playing.

Apr-11-14  Jim Bartle: Giants had a double play Hicks to Crawford to Belt. This was undoubtedly what MLB first?

Apr-11-14  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony long time no see... What are you busy studying The Lions upcoming Draft Picks? ; P

P.S. How come your Lions let this stud go to Da Bears in free agency? http://www.chicagobears.com/multime...

WannaBe: Further note on that double play, too bad it wasn't McCarthy of Arizona D-backs that grounded into it.
Apr-12-14  Jim Bartle: Headline:<Darvich Flirts with No-hitter Again>

he gave up a hit in the sixth inning. I think you need to get to the eighth before real no-hitter talk starts.

Phony Benoni: <Travis> My computer is in the shop getting its XPs out, and I have to sneak into the library to get any computer time at all.

Things are getting desperate, Last night I actually watched a movie on TV from beginning to end.

As for Willie Young, his main strengths are highlight-reel plays, dominating play in August, and jumping offside. The last of these is his most frequently used tactic. Of course, now that he's a Bear he'll start moving like he's encased in cement, so maybe that will improve.

Apr-12-14  Travis Bickle: Hey Phony what movie did you watch, 'Pride of the Yankees? ; P

With our Chicago Bear superior coaching our Detroit convert Willie Young will stop jumping off sides and become a vicious sack monster and fumble creator!! He will take his revenge on your Lions...

P.S. The only way Mr. Young will move like cement is if he gets in trouble with The Chicago Outfit. ; P

Apr-13-14  Travis Bickle: Mr Benoni, while they're overhauling your computer & while your watching TV don't forget to watch The Masters! ; P

WannaBe: Congratulations to Sam Houston State, winning the school's first NCAA Championship, (Women Bowling, beating Nebraska).

Didn't even know that was a sanctioned NCAA sport. Have UCLA won one of them Bowling Championship? Men or Women??

Apr-14-14  hms123: <WannaBe>

I knew: http://www.vucommodores.com/sports/...

Women's bowling is very inexpensive. That's why schools add it to meet conference Title IX requirements. there are few scholarships and they rent the lanes locally.

WannaBe: Gotta love those 6-6 vs. 7-5 or another 6-6 teams in yet another bowl game that will keep me yawning.

http://espn.go.com/college-football...

Apr-15-14  Jim Bartle: Having so many bowl games is ridiculous, of course, and many colleges lose money on them.

But I think a primary reason many teams want to play them is that it basically gives them three or more extra weeks of practice to prepare next year's team. No bowl game, no practice.

Who would have thought the silly six-win requirement would spawn such an abomination as all these wretched bowls, which no-one cares about, save their organisers and the schools which play in them?

Apr-16-14  Jim Bartle: Who's the clown calling this home run? Embarrassing.

http://m.mlb.com/video/v32098113/bo...

Apr-16-14  Jim Bartle: I think a reason replay is not going well is that over the years there's been an unwritten rule that if the ball reaches the base before the runner, the runner is out no matter if the tag was in time.

For years I've seen guys seem to reach the base just before the tag (especially when the tag is on the chest, not the leg). but runners and managers didn't complain. Now the replays are showing the play accurately, and are going to change a lot of calls, and what is called out.

perfidious: <Jim> Not to mention what will become of the phantom double play.
Apr-17-14  Jim Bartle: I believe the phantom double play is specifically not reviewable. But whether a player dropped a ball or not is reviewable, when whether the relay guy was on the base will certainly have to be considered.
