Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

OhioChessFan: The reason that the phantom tag has always been accepted is the injury issue. If you stick your hand in front of a sliding runner often enough, you're going to get hurt. I have no problem with it.

But I have always had a problem with the catcher blocking the plate without the ball, and finally this year MLB is addressing that. However, yesterday, a catcher against the Reds did it, the home plate ump somehow missed it, and some blind man in New York reviewing the play decided the ump was right. If you Youtube it, you'll see that apparently the enforcement of that rule change isn't going to happen any time soon.

Apr-17-14  Jim Bartle: By chance I was just watching a game from the 1975 World Series. There was a "neighborhood" play and Joe Garagiola said Doyle was off second base, and should the runner be safe?

Tony Kubek chimed in, "As soon as runners are required to slide directly into the base instead of at the fielder, I'll support ruling that the fielder must be on the base."

Garagiola: "The preceding was a paid political announcement by the Association of Shortstops."

Phony Benoni: I had to look up the play at the plate rule (my sister wanted to know), and it appears to boil down to this:

1) Catcher has the ball. He can block the plate, and it is the runner's responsibility to avoid the collision. If he does not, he's out.

2) Catcher does not have the ball. He cannot block the plate; it is his responsibility to avoid the collision. If he does not, the runner is safe.

The one exception allowed is if the catcher can only catch the ball by blocking home plate; then, he is allowed to do so. That's a judgment call by the umpire. I haven't seen the video, so I don't know if that was the situation referred to.

I also read that the rule is provisional, and will be reviewed at the end of the year.

And I agree with Kubek.

Phony Benoni: Travis, no one knows what the Lions will do, not even the Lions. One idea is that they should trade up and go for Clowney (whom I keep wanting to call "Rosemary's Baby").

The more sober school of thought is that they'll stay put and go for a shut-down cornerback. There is a guy from Alabama, "Ha-Ha Clinton-Dix", who would seem a perfect fit for this team's general philosophy.

That's what I think they'll do, if only because they might not want to pick up another Suh. THe bloom is definitely off the rose there.

In later rounds, probably wide receiver, safety, and interior offensive line. Their center is a 14-year-veteran, so that needs to be addressed.

Apr-17-14  Jim Bartle: I have never seen such great divergence of opinion about two of the top potential draft picks. I've heard Clowney is the greatest line prospect ever and that he's lazy and unfocused. I've heard Manziel is a brilliant new breed of quarterback and that he'll get killed in the NFL.

Apr-21-14  Jim Bartle: The Angels looked terrible on that Kinsler play.

Check the look the pitcher gives the catcher as he throws to second. I think that's because it was ball four, so no reason to throw?

perfidious: <Jim> Seems to be the case. Catcher did not have his head on straight for any aspect of all that.
Apr-21-14  Jim Bartle: What a ridiculous ground rule. The fence has an orange line on top of it which is out of play (hr or ground rule double). They expect an umpire to decide whether a ball hit the green or the orange?

Over the fence: out of play. Against the fe nce: in play.

And notice how lazy the centerfielder is chasing the fly. It easn't a hard catch, he was just lazy.

Phony Benoni: I don't blame the catcher for making the original throw. In a steal situation, he can't afford to wait even a split-second for the ball/strike call. If the pitch is close at all, he should throw just in case.

I'm not sure Kinsler made a smart play trying to score. He should have been out by five feet. but aggression can pay off against a team that's already rattled, and the Tigers are having trouble scoring runs (Cabrera is hitting around .220).

As for orange lines, aren't they there to make the call easier by marking the top of the wall more clearly? At any rate, that ball, but apparently it didn't cost in the end.
