Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

But the runner was still diving back to first.

Jul-08-15  Jim Bartle: Bill James also busted the theory that teams with most left-on-base were the worst clutch hitting teams. He said the teams which scored the most runs tended to have the most LOB. It makes sense because more runners on base, more runs scored, more left on.

Wow, guess they really wanted to leave town.

WannaBe: So, I had to look it up, the game today, still missed the shortest game mark by about 30 minutes.

Shortest game (so far) 2015, Mets at Marlins, one hour and fifty-eight minutes. Full nine innings, too.

Gotta be the Mets, again, huh? But it was a Monday night game, so it wasn't traveling day.

My most traumatic is the Sea of Hands game, and I'm not sure there is anything in second place. I was 10, and I couldn't decide whether Madden or Stabler was the most evil man on earth. Sometime later I read about Darryl Stingley waking up in the hospital with Madden in tears by his bedside, and I just couldn't believe it.

Being a Dolphin fan has sort of been like being a Roman Empire fan around 470. Both organizations in fairly consistent decline during the admirer's entire life.

Be interesting to see what N. Yost do:

<In an interesting aside, if Sale doesn't pitch Tuesday, Ventura would be comfortable starting his left-hander next Sunday against Yost's Kansas City Royals.

If Sale pitches, Ventura said he might consider moving Sale to the following series against the St. Louis Cardinals.>

I realize White Sox are 10 games behind KC for central and probably won't be contending for any play-off spot. Still be interesting to see what happens.

I am so glad that Kershaw did not make it this year. And hopefully Greinke only pitch one inning; not start the game and pitch 2 innings.

Good thing is, every team resumes play Friday, which means we have nothing to watch Wednesday/Thursday.

But NL Manager is B. Bochy, who <MAY> have ulterior motivation to pitch Greinke the whole 9 innings. Or maybe he will use Greinke for 5 and use Scherzer for 4. =))

Hold your horses <WannaBe>. Kershaw <did> make it, as Scherzer pitched today, and is ineligible for the ASG (good move by the Nats, as they edged BAL 3-2).

I hear Dozier also made it. The two guys I wanted to win the Final Vote, get in the game anyway. :)

In other news, Blue Jays were trailing 7-0, until their 8-run 6th, but the Royals got back 3 in the bottom half.

Yo Phony, this is your good pal Harry Carey along with Jack Brickhouse reporting to you in the bar from the great beyond... As The Babe is on his 25th hotdog and 40th glass of beer & Billy Martin sleeps with head on the bar I report the good news that finally The Cubs beat the lousy, stinkin' rotten, garbage, skunk white sux! Jake Arietta only gave up 1 run, didn't walk anybody & hit a Homerun! Holy Cow!! ; P

P.S. Jack says, Hey Hey!!

Jul-12-15  Travis Bickle: Phony I'm still drinking this lousy, rancid warm Schlitz! Anyway here's a Cubs celebration for you...

Phony Benoni: Well, Harry, I'm glad somebody is celebrating. Did Michael Jackson ever play the royalties he owed you on those dance moves?

After the Friday Night Fiasco, the Tigers have been beaten badly the last two games. They are now nine games behind Kansas City, and their lead in the struggle for last place in the division has shrunk to one game.

This year is over. I'd say "Pass the Schlitz", but we are not worthy of even that warm comfort.

They don't make 'em like you any more, Harry. We're fans, and we want our broadcasters to be fans and use the word "WAR" only in the context of destroying the other team.

In these parts, we used to have Bob Ufer, who did Michigan football. He was known to go over the top on occasion:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AEF...

I don't know what he had been drinking, but there can't have been any left for the rest of the stadium.

Jul-13-15  Travis Bickle: https://sports-images.vice.com/imag...

Hello Phony, this is Harry Caray once again... I didn't realize Michael Jackson danced? I only know Michael could really play basketball! I think they have a statue of him outside the United Center. ; P

Hey is that Bob Ufer related to Bob Uecker? He can really broadcast a game!! And Bo Schembechler, what a fantastic football coach he was! I think he should have gotten The Lombardy Trophy at least once in his career. ; P

I've been away from the game a little too much these days & I didn't realize your Tigers had fallen back to .500 baseball. The last several years they had outstanding teams. I do know that you're ace Justin Verlander has been struggling a little bit... I think maybe he should leave that beautiful blonde alone during the season. You know the old adage, Dames weaken legs! What do you think it will take to turn it around?

On the other hand, The Cubbies who just beat The Redbirds 3 out of 4 could only salvage 1 game from the Socks?! They clearly need to send that reliever Pedro Strop packing! On Friday he was so damn wild he plunked a Whitesox batter 3 feet inside when he was trying to bunt!! And that was the only run the socks scored! You can't trust a guy who wears his hat sideways! Maybe he's a gang banger...

http://a.espncdn.com/combiner/i?img...

The cubs need to acquire a big bat & another starting pitcher if they want to contend down the stretch.

P.S. I hope you're doing fine with your chess activities. As for myself being dead sucks! You wear the same suit everyday & it's always hot as Hades. Ok Phony so long. This is Harry Caray.
