Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Well, Harry, it's just one of those unfortunate lulls we all go through from time to time. You know, like that decade you spent on the wrong side of Chicago.

What with Verlander still having not won a game and Migule Cabrera out for another six weeks, the outlook is not good. Most of their off-season moves have blown up in their faces. There may be a shake-up in the front office as well this winter, and the Cubs just may make it back to the World Series before the Tigers.

So I don't think you have anything to worry about. Besides, didn't you wear the s ame suit every day anyhow?

  WannaBe: Z. Greinke @ M. Scherzer, O/U is 6.

What, are they nuts? I see a 2-1 game, maybe even 1-0 19 inning game. Both pitchers going all 19 innings, too!! =))

Penguincw: Over/Under at 6 might not be so crazy: Dodgers won 5-0.

There are currently 2 games in extra innings. The Battle of Ohio should end soon, but NYM-STL currently scoreless in the 12th.

WannaBe: Took the Dodgers, and also gave up 1.5 runs, $10 to collect $26, took Indians, gave up 1.5 runs, too.

Thought that was a lost game, until Indians scored 2, bet $10 to collect $26.50

Ka-Chin! Ka-Chin!

My 2 bets on the Giants do not look good, need them to win by at least 2, bottom 9 2-1 SFG. Extra innings?

For the night game, would need LAA to win by 2 over BoSox to cash in another tix.

Going to the 16 inning, good for team pitching ERA, 1-1. Did not play that game.

Jul-20-15  Travis Bickle: Hahahahaha!! No Phony, he's a used car salesman... ; P
Jul-20-15  Jim Bartle: Actually "White Men Can't Jump" is not a Spike Lee movie. It was directed by the guy who did "Bull Durham."
Jul-20-15  Travis Bickle: <JimBartle> JB I stand corrected... I could've swore Spike directed that film.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0105812/

Jul-20-15  Jim Bartle: Lee did direct an excellent basketball movie, "He Got Game," starring Denzel Washington and Ray Allen.

Phony Benoni: For no reason, I was wondering who had good and bad hitting records against Sandy Koufax:

1) The best, for players with at least 15 at bats, hit .404 (21 for 52).

2) The worst "ofer" covered 18 at-bats.

Clues? Well, both were outfielders. One left-handed, and one a right-handed future NL batting champion.

(By the way -- Norm Sherry, the back-up catcher often credited with turning Koufax's career around, went 0 for 12 against Sandy. That's gratitude for you.)

Jul-20-15  Jim Bartle: I heard Bob Uecker had a good record against Koufax, at least better than against the rest of the pitchers.

One of the better-known batter-facing-pitcher records involved the "other" Dodger pitcher of the 60s, Don Drysdale. Wilie McCovey just destroyed him.

It's tough looking at batters facing Koufax. You really have to be able to look at records from 1962-66 and ignore earlier years. A lot of guys hit him hard before 1962.

Phony Benoni: Well, Uecker wasn't that great against Kouvax: 7/38 for .184. But judging from this chart:

http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/...

He may have just been looking just a bit outside his own line.

And the point about the two halves of Koufax's career is well taken. In the first part, you have guys like Bob Nieman (5/11, .455) and George Crowe(4/9, .444).

WannaBe: Surprised at Sherry's record vs Koufax, thinking the catcher would know the pitchers' tendencies.

So much for that idea.

Phony Benoni: Those who can, do. Those who can't become back-up catchers.
Jul-21-15  Jim Bartle: Hobie Landrith resents that remark.

OhioChessFan: Sometimes those sort of stats are predicated more on the hitter already being on a tear when he faces a particular pitcher. That is, he'd hit anyone, including Koufax. A couple of those would skew the one on one records to the point of irrelevance.

Phony Benoni: <OCF> Quite so, and certainly nine or eleven or even fifteen at-bats is hardly a sufficient sample.

But Virdon had 21 hits in 52 at-bats. Their careers were synchronous. (Koufax 1955-1966, Virdon 1955-1965 with a very brief comeback in1968). That's more significant., and the fact that Virdon batted left-handed makes it even more interesting.

Still, that would only be 15 or so games, and we'd have to analyze his performance more carefully to see if he loaded up in the early days.

WannaBe: News: Goodell says no time line on Brady's Ruling.

http://espn.go.com/boston/nfl/story...

Reaction: Would be funny as sheet if the ruling comes out on Week 15 and Brady is suspended for 4 games, or even less. Including postseason.

Would the commish do that? Keep the suspense during the season. And let the Pats sweat it out?

perfidious: <PB> My recollection is of Virdon being a fine defensive CF who was not so great with the bat; hard to believe he had Koufax' number. Of course, as you say, Koufax spent a few years finding himself before metamorphosing into the monster of 1962-66.
Jul-21-15
Premium Chessgames Member
Phony Benoni: In 1962, when Koufax missed a good deal of time with an injury, Virdon faced him once and went 3/4. In 1963, he faced Koufax three times, went 210. In 1964 and 1965 Virdon was platooned with the right-handed hitting Manny Mota, and didn't face Koufax at all.

So most of the damage was done in the early years, and the fact that he wasn't allowed to face Koufax at all later speaks volumes.

Jul-22-15  Jim Bartle: The Dodgers moved to Chavez Ravine in 1961, from one of the best hitters parks to the worst.

The first five years Koufax's ERA at Dodger Stadium was more than one run better than on the road. In 1966 he was still 0.5 runs better at home, even though he was below 2.00 on the road.
