| Jul-06-15 | | playground player: <Esteemed Baseball Mavens> I turned on the Mets game yesterday and was immediately treated to two inanities. "Last year So-and-so had the ninth worst Velocity Change in the National League." Take about jejune statistics... Followed up by, "Whatsisname doesn't like being in the six-man pitching rotation..." So what's this? Starting pitchers now work only once a week, and hardly ever past the seventh inning? What a bunch of girlie men! Mickey Lolich, 1971--Mais ou sont las nieges d'antan? (Francois Villon) |

 | | keypusher: <playground player> But wouldn't it have been nice for Sandy Koufax to have been able to pitch past age 30? I think Bill James suggested somewhere that someone try a three-man rotation but have them pitch just a few innings each time. The current usage of pitchers is surely sub-optimal (ie not using your most effective short-stint pitcher if you're tied or a run behind), but the days of Mickey Lolich are never coming back. |
|
| Jul-06-15 | | Jim Bartle: There are Loliches and Ryans and Spahns, but there are also Gary Nolan, Wayne Simmons, Don Gullett, and those are just the Reds. Many, many pitchers have blown out their arms from overwork. Weren't Kerry Wood and Josh Beckett supposed to be heading straight to the Hall of Fame? Six man rotations do seem going too far the other way, though. To paraphrase James, that's taking six starts away from your best pitcher, six starts away from your second best pitcher, six starts away from your third best pitcher, six starts away from your fourth best pitcher, six starts away from your fifth best pitcher, and giving all those starts to your sixth best pitcher. Then we have Kansas City from last year, who had a sixth-inning reliever, a seventh-inning reliever, an eighth-inning reliever, and a ninth-inning reliever. That's sort of like James' suggestion. |

 | | Phony Benoni: I remember a book called "Percentage Baseball", published around 1960, which suggested that no pitcher should go more than three innings. Basically, once through the lineup. It would never work, of no, since nobody would ever want to start a game. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Newest entry for the Home Run Derby!
It had to happen sooner or later. No matter how bad a hitter they might be, a major league pitcher is a good enough athlete to make contact once in a while. And as long as you make contact, accidents can happen. |

BTW: Does anyone here know when the All-Star Final Vote winner will be <announced> (I know voting closes on Friday at 4pm). I'm currently running the ChessBookie game, and put up 2 preseason bets on them (MLB Final Vote: AL and MLB Final Vote: NL), and fear that I'll need to put up more bets, since that one probably isn't going to pay. |

 | | Phony Benoni: <Penguincw> All I could find out about the Final Vote is that it ends at 4:00 ET on Friday. I suppose the announcement would come soon afterward, but could not find a specific time. http://m.mlb.com/news/article/13505... Harry: I don't get what the problem is. | | Phony Benoni: With Miguel Cabrera on the sidelines, the Tigers are desperate for first base help. They just acquired Marc Krauss from Tampa Bay, hitting .133 on the year. http://m.tigers.mlb.com/news/articl... I am not getting excited. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Just noticed that the Tigers lead the league in both batting average and in double plays hit into. Thinking about this, it might not be that unusual. Higher batting average = more runners = more chances for double plays. More double plays hit into = Fewer at bats = Higher batting average. |
|
| Jul-08-15 | | Jim Bartle: Somehow that led me to look at Prince Fielder, who would be a candidate for hitting into a lot of double plays. This year he is leading the AL with 110 hits iin 82 games, and has 38 walks and HBP. Yet he has scored only 41 runs. He has 13 home runs. That means he has been on base 135 times and has scored only 28 times. Can't anybody in the lineup behind him get a hit? |

Higher batting average = more runners = more chances for double plays. More double plays hit into = Fewer at bats = Higher batting average.> I remember one of Bill James' breakthroughs was what he called the false equalization of defensive statistics. Bad teams let lots of guys from the other team on base, and so tended to turn lots of double plays. Once he figured out how to adjust for this, it turned out that bad teams were, in fact, worse at turning the double play. One of his theories was one of the main reasons that Ty Cobb's Tigers didn't do better was that they were historically awful at turning the double play. |
