 | | WannaBe: Kershaw lasted into the 4th, after his 7th K, he got yanked. LAA losing, unless they can pull off another miracle... Season's over. |

 | | WannaBe: So much for all the tie-break scenarios, none of it happened!! Booooo!!!! Guess we are stuck with Monday Night Football, no baseball tomorrow. |
|
Oct-04-15
 | | Phony Benoni: Oh, yes. Monday Night Football. All of Detroit is anxiously awaiting the start of the Hockey season this week. |

 | | Penguincw: Hey guys, any predictions for how the MLB postseason bracket will turn out? Some World Series that would be really nice to see:
- TOR vs. STL
- STL vs. KC
- TOR vs. CHC
- NYY vs. STL
Something tells me the LCS are going to be STL - LAD and KC - TOR. The 1st one, same old, same old. The 2nd one, that is one everyone wants to see. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Well, of course I want to see the Cubs win the NL. Their problem, of course, is that they have to get past the two best teams in the league to even make it to the League Championship Series. The two NL teams, I'm not really interested in are St. Louis and the Dodgers, so it will probably be one of them. In the AL, I have to root for KC out of Central Division loyalty, not to mention I think they're the most solid team. Toronto is very impressive, though, and I wouldn't mind seeing them getting in. It's hard to believe in a team like the Rangers who outscored their opponents by only 18 runs over the course of the season. That sort of baseball is not playoff friendly, Houston would be fine, but I don't know if they have enough to make up for the lack of experience. Unfortunately, I cannot say that rooting for the Yankees is not in my DNA. My father was a Yankees fan. But he got to watch Ruth and Gehrig and DiMaggio play, so I excuse him. I wonder if the networks would prefer Yankees - Dodgers or Yankees - Mets? |
|
Oct-05-15 | | Jim Bartle: The only thing greater than the Cubs in the World Series would be the Cubs in the Series without lights at Wrigley. Then we would have the first World Series day games in about forever. I think Dodgers are the favorites to win, just because they have two first-line starters. They can start four of seven games. |

 | | WannaBe: Amidst all the play-off excitements of Sunday, you may have missed Ichiro pitching an inning: http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/1... As far as TV goes, they want big market teams, NYY/LAD would be their dream come true. Talkin' heads would be tripping over theyselves [sic] discussing Yogi, Don Larsen, comparing lefties of Koufax and Kershaw and even possibly of A. Wood learning from veterans. Worst case would probably be TOR/StL, KC/StL, TEX/StL or HOU/StL, Midwest (or any small market) teams that do not generate viewership from East/West coasts. Very strong rumours that Greinke will exercise his players' option to exit the contract with LAD and becoming free agent. All my SFG friends are drooling over this idea of MadBum, Greinke, Heston, Vogelsong as starting pitchers. |

 | | WannaBe: First NFL coach have been fired, Regis Philbin have been axed by 'Fins. At least he can now go back to hosting daytime TV shows. |

 | | Tabanus: Bernard Frank Brodersen and Egil Opsahl. The former you may have met perhaps. Bruce K. lived in Portland where the US Open 1987 was. |

 | | perfidious: CC Sabathia has entered treatment for an alcohol problem and will miss the playoffs. He may pitch for the Pinstripers, but here's hoping he gets himself in order and comes back afterwards. |
|
Oct-05-15
 | | Phony Benoni: <Tabanus> I did play Brodersen once, but I think it was Pasadena 1983. And I'm glad Opsahl can come off the list; he was the only unknown from Detroit 1933. |
|
Oct-05-15
 | | Phony Benoni: Looks like the Yankees should have kept Ichiro after all. They might have been able to use his mound skills in the play-offs. By the way, he needs 65 hits for 3000, but only batted .229 this year. Somebody will probably give him a chance, though. |

 | | WannaBe: Heads have begun to roll in the MLB, Matt Williams is out in Washington. (This is on top of the teams that already did the in-season firing...) Which team will be next to "Change Direction"? Seattle? White Sox? Phillies? Reds? "We want to thank [fill in name here] for his service to our great organization, but the ownership have decided for a change of direction in where we are going. We wish [fill in name here] best of luck in the future." There, you don't even have to thank me for writing that speech for ya. |

 | | WannaBe: From Westgate Las Vegas, to win the World Series:
TOR 3.5-1
KC 4-1
LAD 5-1
NYM 5-1
StL 7-1
TEX 8-1
CHI 12-1
PIT 12-1
NYY 14-1
HOU 15-1 |
|
Oct-05-15 | | Jim Bartle: CC Sabathia checks into rehab on the eve of the playoffs? There's got to be more to it than he needs help. |
|
Oct-05-15
 | | perfidious: <Jim> The thought had occurred to me; sounds dire and I hope things take a positive turn. Tough thing to beat--lot harder than that batter who owns you. |
|
Oct-05-15
 | | Phony Benoni: Taking a look at the Yankees' pitching stats:
http://www.baseball-reference.com/t... It appears that losing Sabathia is not as fatal as it might appear. While he did lead the team in innings -- with only 167.1 -- they have plenty of starting depth and he was having a subpar year. This could be a long-standing problem which is finally coming out. Losing Teixeira to a fractured bone in his shin could be a bigger blow. |
|
Oct-05-15 | | Jim Bartle: But why not wait two weeks more, or possibly three days more? Maybe he just wanted out? |
|
Oct-05-15
 | | Phony Benoni: What's the deadline for submitting play-off rosters? That may have had something to do with bringing this to a head. Regardless, there is obviously a serious situation here about which we do not yet have all the details. |
|
Oct-05-15 | | Jim Bartle: That's something I was thinking about. Maybe the Yankees pushed him to drop off the team as a roster move. |
|
Oct-05-15 | | Jim Bartle: Journalistic ethics:
NY Times has a big story, repeated on other sites, that employees of the big fantasy sports companies have been using inside information for betting, excuse me, selecting their teams. Sports Illustrated: story is featured prominently.
ESPN: Nowhere to be found. |
|
Oct-06-15
 | | Phony Benoni: When you're a longtime Lions fan, nothing surprises you. Nothing. |
|
Oct-06-15 | | Jim Bartle: The game was so dull I went to do something else in the second half. Looks like I picked a bad week... Meanwhile, I see ESPN.com does have a report on the DraftKings mess. Employees of those fantasy places should be prohibited from betting, whether on their own site or any other. And I think SI and ESPN should not be associated with DraftKings/FanDuel. They can write about fantasty picks, as if it were horse racing, and maybe accept advertising (but honest advertising), but not have a stake in the businesses. |
|
Oct-06-15 | | Jim Bartle: Just saw it. The player didn't know the rule? Inexcusable. The referee standing 10 ft. away didn't know the rule? Unbelievable, cannot be. And the head ref says it wasn't his area of the field? He certainly saw what happened; he should have thrown the flag. If the ref had flown the flag the LB who batted the ball would have gotten the Leon Lett treatment. |

 | | WannaBe: Here's the updated tracker for NFL teams playing on the road 2 or more time zones away. Week 4 (1-3):
<LOST> Oakland @ Chicago <LOST> Cleveland @ San Diego <WON> Green Bay @ San Francisco <LOST> Detroit @ Seattle This will bring the running total to 4-13 for Two or More Time-Zone on the Road (TMTZR), while rest of the road teams in week 4 went 5-6, for a running total of 23-23 after 4 weeks of play. Week 5 will feature the following teams that have to travel 2 time zones or more: <??> Seattle @ Cincinnati <??> Arizona @ Detroit <??> San Francisco @ New York <??> Pittsburgh @ San Diego |
