 | | Phony Benoni: Darn. Knew we should have cancelled the rest of the season yesterday. |
|
Apr-09-16
 | | WannaBe: Dodgers would be undefeated if all games lasted only 5 innings. |

Apr-09-16
 | | Penguincw: *eye twitches* Bumgarner homers off Kershaw. At least the Flyers are leading. Jays lose another lead, but at least it's not the bullpen's fault this time. |

 | | WannaBe: Doders show signs of life, win in 10 innings!! |
|
| Apr-09-16 | | luftforlife: <Penguincw>: I know the infield at Rogers Centre features more dirt now than it did last year (seems to be an improvement), but is the turf surface different too? There have always been seams, but the ball sure has taken some pronounced hops of late. I'm glad the Red Sox are bouncing back despite their weaknesses, but it is disconcerting nonetheless to watch the ball bounce over Bautista's head way out there in right field. He had to sit down to make several catches too, although perhaps that was because of the lights and not the field. One thing's for certain: if the Sox and Jays keep battling as they've done in the past two games, we're in for one heck of a divisional rivalry. Kind regards. |

| Apr-10-16 | | Party Animal: Hey Phony, I only have 1 more front row 2016 Chicago Draft ticket left! Let me know if you want me to send you the ticket so you can check out your Detroit Lion drat picks up close like an NFL GM! http://www.choosechicago.com/2016nf...
P.S. I can get you Dick Butkus, Gayle Sayers & Da Coach Ditka's autograph!! |
|
| Apr-10-16 | | Jim Bartle: <you can check out your Detroit Lion <drat> picks > I think you're telling more truth than you intended.
For example, in 1996 the Warriors took Todd Fuller with the 11th pick. When it turned out they passed over future stars Kobe, Nash, Stojakovic and Jermaine O'Neal, Fuller became a "draft pick." |

 | | Phony Benoni: <Party Animal> That is a kind offer, but if I want to hang around with people arguing an cheering about something they know absolutely nothing about, I'll just stay on <chessgames.com>. |
|
| Apr-10-16 | | Jim Bartle: Oops, screwed up my own joke above. The end is supposed to be "drat pick." |
|
| Apr-10-16 | | Party Animal: Mr Benoni, you look like a pony player to me, so here's the low down on The Run For the Roses, the 1st Saturday in May! https://www.kentuckyderby.com/ |

 | | Phony Benoni: <Party Animal> Are you sure you that's right? I see no mention of Michigan or Ohio State, not to mention Michigan State. |

 | | WannaBe: The Way Too Early Reaction after one week of beees-ball. 1. Break up them O's, last undefeated.
2. Break up them A's, why are they in first (4-3)???
3. What's wrong with Dodgers (bullpen) pitching??? Blew a 5-0 lead today. 4. What is UP with them Reds?! Are they too young or too stupid to realize that every expert had them losing 90+ games this season? 5. Poor Twinkies... |
|
Apr-10-16
 | | OhioChessFan: http://www.wcpo.com/sports/baseball... 4. I didn't have them losing 90, <Wannabe> I had them losing 100. |

 | | WannaBe: <OCF> That's great link, just great!! =)) I dug up my historical sheets that I brought back from Reno; William Hill Sports Book: Cincinnati Reds O/U wins 68.5 to win World Series 150-1, to win NL 60-1. Someone book mark this post, we may have to revisit this come late September, just for sheets and giggles. |

 | | WannaBe: Trevor Story of Colorado have smacked 7 HRs in his first six (rookie) games. He's on pace to hit 189 HRs, which would be pretty impressive, considering that Ichiro have a hard time getting just 189 hits. Let alone HRs. |
|
| Apr-11-16 | | Party Animal: Hey Phony this bum for The Reds is throwing a no hitter, bottom of the 7th. My question is this. A Cubs batter hit a grounder past the third baseman who did not touch the ball which he misplayed. I thought if you didn't make contact with the ball it was a hit. Have they changed the rule? |
|
| Apr-11-16 | | Party Animal: Basehit! There goes the No No. ; P |

| Apr-11-16 | | Party Animal: Hey Phony, Addison Russell's 8th inning three run homer iced it for The Cubs! ; P https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOh... |
|
| Apr-12-16 | | Jim Bartle: How in the world is this news? I remember it going back to at least JR Richard, who threw the ball at least a foot closer to home plate? Plus it's completely self-evident.
<When is a 96.4 mph fastball just as fast as one that averages 97.3 mph? Trust us, it's not a trick question, so long as you remember that the requirement that a pitcher deliver the ball from 60 feet, 6 inches from home plate is more of a suggestion than a rule. The answer: When one of those fastballs (Jose Fernandez) is being delivered 7 inches farther off the pitching rubber than the other (Nathan Eovaldi).> http://m.mlb.com/news/article/17170... |

 | | Phony Benoni: <Party Animal> Well, the no-touch, no-error thing is sort of a rule of thumb rather than an actual rule. If the Official Scorer feels the ball should have been fielded, he can call it an error without even a touch. And, that late in a no-hitter, Official Scorers often assume evert fielders into Ozzie Smith. Hits have to be absolutely clean. |
|
| Apr-12-16 | | Jim Bartle: It's a strange custom. If the ball had gone cleanly through Buckner's legs without touching his glove, it would have been a hit? Anybody remember the McRae/Brett batting championship controversy in 1976? A Twins outfielder appeared just to let a Brett fly ball land in front of him, giving Brett the batting championship. I wonder if that had any effect on official scorers rulings on untouched balls. |
|
Apr-12-16
 | | Phony Benoni: All other things being equal, I think "through the legs" is generally going to be an error., while hard-hit balls, bad hops and plays where the fielder must make more than "ordinary effort" are hits. Paradoxically, a good fielder may be more likely to get an error because he's expected to make the play (which is why I brought in Ozzie Smith). Of course, there is always "home cooking" as well to consider. <JB> Hard to judge intent when it's in the eye of the beholder. But if the outfielder did let the ball drop deliberately, that's worthy of a major suspension at the very least. I think also of the Cobb - Lajoie fiasco in 1910, when Jack O'Connor, manager of the Browns, deliberately ordered his third basemen, Red Corriden, to play deep and allow Lajoie to lay down numerous bunt hits on the final day of the season. O'Connor was banned for life, which was probably a relief for the Browns: he went 47-105 as their manager. Corriden went on to play with the Tigers (and Cobb) a couple of years later. That must have been fun. |
|
| Apr-12-16 | | Jim Bartle: <Paradoxically, a good fielder may be more likely to get an error because he's expected to make the play (which is why I brought in Ozzie Smith).> A really fast player may get errors because he gets easily to balls--which he may then misplay--that most players could not reach, or reach only with a diving effort. I remember Carney Lansford being considered a good third baseman even though he covered little ground. He made diving stops sometimes on balls that quick third basemen could have gotten to easily without hitting the ground. I remember in a postseason game one year Gary Pettis made a long, long run to reach a ball which really should have been caught by the leftfielder. And he dropped it. No other centerfielder could have reached that ball. No matter. Error. |
