Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: <GrahamClayton> The source you cite, <Chess Review, May 1948, p. 24>, gives Black's name as <E Holland> "Chess Life" (June 5, 1948, p. 1) has a table of results giving <E L Holland>. That form also appears in USCF rating supplements for a player fro ...

Phony Benoni: Black's bishop makes me think of Godzilla emerging from the depths of the ocean to wreak havoc. However, in the end it's his Two Little Friends who steal the show. Well, maybe not so litt.

Phony Benoni: it was the last round. Rison-Morry was mired in last place. These things happen.

   Jun-06-22 W Adams vs M Kagan, 1947

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Case in point. The second hit is questionable, and possibly the third as well.

The first was definitely clean. Definitely.

WannaBe: I got 7 wrong. Ugh!

http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/1...

Dodgers, Giants, and Cubs were super easy/obvious, some were a bit hard. Screwed up on Miller Park (Brewers, twice!)

WannaBe: This trivia came via ESPN, as Golden State Warriors go for record 73rd win tonight, can you name the two MLB teams that have the most regular season wins?

(Extra bonus, name the years!!)

Apr-14-16  Jim Bartle: Yankees 114 in 1998 and Seattle 116 in 2001.

Apr-14-16  Party Animal: <OhioChessFan: Hey Travis, if not for those cheating umpires, the Reds would have won last night.> Pardon me? ; P
Apr-14-16  Party Animal: Mr Benoni, I think the Hawks are going to take a dive on The Cup this year. They don't want people to get bored with them winning every year.

P.S. Plus The Cubs are rolling now! ; P

Apr-14-16  Party Animal: Maddon for President!

Apr-14-16  Jim Bartle: Theo Epstein for Emperor?
Apr-14-16  Party Animal: Oh Yeah! Sounds Good!! ; P
Apr-14-16  Jim Bartle: Last night Nolan Arenado came up to bat after hitting a homer, a single, and a double.

He hit another home run. Why doesn't he get credit for a cycle? He doesn't get it because he exceeded the requirement?

What if he had touched third base and then run into the dugout. Or stayed on third. Would he then be credited with a cycle?

Apr-14-16  Jim Bartle: Listen to the third/final call of this pinch home run by Lee: http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/114932...

Phony Benoni: Party Animal, I think he Wings and Hawks should play a series after they get eliminated just for the heck of it. Probably draw more fan interest than the No Hockey League's silliness. Have the games at some neutral site like Banks Island. (And if anybody who reads these words used to play the trivia game on ICC, they'll know what I mean!)

These are certified at the Words of a Man who will have nothing but baseball to concentrate on in about ten days.

Apr-15-16  Jim Bartle: <how is it possible to have batting average higher than on-base percentage...>

I think it has to do with sacrifice flies, if a batter has not walked.

  Phony Benoni: <JB>'s got it.
<baseball-reference.com> defines OBP as:

(AB + BB + HBP) / (AB + BB + HBP + SF).

I wonder why sacrifice bunts aren't included.

Phony Benoni: And here's an example:

In 1956, he had no walks or hit-by-pitches, but did have one sacrifice fly. BA=211, OBP=.200.

WannaBe: This is kinda funny, SFG's running a special that's related to GS winning 73 games, 3 selected game tickets are selling for 7.30 each.

After fees and such, it's $11.30 each, section 332. =)

WannaBe: Imagine if Phillies did the same thing, offer $1.00 tickets (76ers won 10 games), or Dodgers follow suit, and offer $1.70 tickets.

While we are on the subject of Bees-ball, it's all over for them Cubs, lost at home today to them lowly Rockies.

Apr-15-16  luftforlife: Blue Jays Manager John Gibbons just went to the mound to summon Pat Venditte from the 'pen. How did he do so? With the ol' "quotation marks!" Good to know John is ambidextrous too!

Penguincw: Looks like Atlanta has picked up its first win on the season. Minnesota still awaiting its first.

Great game on Jackie Robinson Day: Giants @ Dodgers, MadBum vs. Kershaw. Say, didn't these 2 face off just less than a week ago?
