|
| May-17-16 | | Jim Bartle: I saw a good one in 1964: http://www.retrosheet.org/boxesetc/... More for what happened afterward, though. Frank Robinson was hit by a pitch in the first and charged the mound, clearing the benches and leading to a few punches. I don't know why he got so upset. It was Ron Herbel who hit him, so it couldn't have hurt. Anyway, he comes up again in the third. Booooooo!!!
Long, very long home run to left.
Booooooo!!
Comes up again in the 4th. Takes a massive cut, trying to put one in the bay. Struck out. Yaaayyyyyyy!!!
Leads off the 5th. Boooooooo!
Longer home run than the first one.
Came up in the 8th. Now real serious booing. Won't stop. Three massive cuts. Strike out.
Yaaaayyy!!!
Reds win 7-1. What a great day.
A few years ago when the subject of brawls came up, Robinson said he never charged the mound when he was hit. Now he had a poor memory, or was fibbing. The vitriol toward Robinson was real, even though he was from Oakland. So was centerfielder Vada Pinson, same high school, but people didn't hate him. Of course he became beloved to Giants fans when he was the manager, even when he clearly screwed up. |

 | | keypusher: Just reading up on doubles and triples on this page and thinking you could put together a good baseball book from the posts on this forum. <Amazing that Biggio ranks so high. At first I wondered why Musial managed to hit one more than Cobb, but probably Cobb got a lot of triples that would have been doubles for most players. (Or singles for David Ortiz.)> Cobb had nearly 300 triples, so I'm sure there's something to that. But he hit an awful lot of singles. I once looked at percentages of extra base hits for a few old-time players. Nearly half of Ruth's hits were for extra bases, while only 14% of Wee Willie Keeler's were. Cobb was about 24%. Of course it's unfair to compare him to Ruth, but even Tris Speaker was close to 30%. He had nearly 700 fewer hits than Cobb but more or less equal numbers of extra-base hits. Speaker had a big edge in doubles and Cobb had a big edge in triples. |
|
| May-17-16 | | Jim Bartle: The switch to the lively ball around 1920 makes those comparisons difficult. |

 | | WannaBe: Still early, two games to look for, games at Milwaukee and StL. |
|
May-17-16
 | | WannaBe: Nevermind the game in StL. The game at Milwaukee is getting interesting... Need 9 more outs. |
|
May-17-16
 | | WannaBe: Nevermind that game in Milwaukee either. |

 | | Phony Benoni: Some hitters use the Open Stance. Some hitters use the Closed Stance. And then there's the Introverted Stance.

|
May-18-16
 | | chancho: Maybe Jeff was taking an imaginary dump (on the Red Sox) with that stance. |

 | | WannaBe: What is up with them Phillies?! Break them up!!
ChiCubs' are now on another two game losing streak, winning percentage drops to .730 from .800, on pace now to win <ONLY> 118 games. Wait 'til next year. |

 | | WannaBe: Useless Information Depart:
https://twitter.com/BBTN/status/732... That's Kershaw, some Angels guy, some Boston guy, some DBacks guy, some ChiSox guy... Kershaw's next start will be at home Monday, May 23rd v. Cincinnati Reds. Then May 30 at ChiCubs, if the current rotation holds. The 'Odd' guys?! That Angels guy and that ChiSox guy. What's so odd, you ask? Well, that's my trivia question to y'all baseball experts! |

 | | WannaBe: Ex-stadium announcer sues 49ers for age discrimination. http://www.tmz.com/2016/05/18/bob-s... Apparently that 49ers means your (maximum) age! |

| May-18-16 | | Jim Bartle: Oh man. Vin Scully must be calling his lawyer. |
|
| May-18-16 | | Jim Bartle: Stumbled on this, fun to listen to while doing something else. Giants vs. St. Louis in 1962. Marichal vs. Gibson. McCovey in rightfield and Felipe Alou in left, which seems odd. Announcers Harry Caray and Jack Buck.
Caray's pronunciation of the names of some Giants players is pretty funny. Includes the commercials, including for cigarettes.

 | | WannaBe: <Jim Bartle: ...Giants vs. St. Louis in 1962. Marichal vs. Gibson. McCovey in rightfield and Felipe Alou in left, which seems odd. > Correct, makes you wonder where the Center Fielder is. Two men outfield, that is odd. Maybe the manager forgot to play the 9th men. |
|
| May-18-16 | | Jim Bartle: Actually the centerfielder lost a ball in the twilight and it fell for a triple. So it's as if they didn't have one on that play. Harry Caray sayd "MYU-ci-al." Sounds weird.
Six Hall of Famers in the game. |
|
| May-18-16 | | playground player: Given Ty Cobb's career stolen base totals, 892 of them, a lot of his singles might as well have been doubles. |

 | | WannaBe: Trivia Question Time!!
<Justin Verlander, Don Newcombe. What they have in common>. Okay, here's the answer to the trivia question that I "indirectly" proposed about Kershaw, that Angels guy, that DBacks guy, that ChiSox guy, and that Boston guy. The answer is, that Angels guy and that ChiSox guy have no Cy Young Award!! But that ChiSox guy is still active. How on early did that Angels/Texas/Houston guy never won a Cy Young? |
|
| May-19-16 | | Jim Bartle: Because Ryan was never the best pitcher. Marichal never won either, and never deserved to, despite years of 25, 26, 24 wins. |
|
May-19-16
 | | Phony Benoni: Newcombe and Verlander are both Cy Young winners who have yet to win a World Series game -- including the year they won the award -- but there must be more of those. |

 | | WannaBe: Okay, time for answer!!
<Until 2011 when Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander accomplished the feat, Newcombe was the only baseball player to have won the Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player and Cy Young awards in his career. > https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_N... |
