Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

May-26-16  Jim Bartle: Oh yes. But he didn't hit many home runs, in Fenway or elsewhere, except for one year.

Phony Benoni: True, Yastrzemski was generally in the teens to mid-20s in home runs. But he hit 40 in both 1969 and 1970, and the latter is little inferior to the magical 1967 season statistically.

Of course those were expansion years, so the feat should probably get an Yastrisk.

May-26-16  Jim Bartle: Wait, I thought it meant Boggs was hitting home runs at Fenway, not Yastrzemski.

perfidious: <PB....Another kid who made a big impression there was Joel Benjamin, who's a year younger than Yasser. How young was he?>

Seirawan is actually four years older than Benjamin, who was aged eleven at Lincoln.

My first sighting of Joel was in the US Junior Open, held the following summer at Storrs, Conn.

Some recollections of that visit to UConn below:

<....Late in the tourney, Eric Moskow (who was built like a light tank) et al lifted a vehicle from the road to one of the greens, and one of the university suits gave us all a stern lecture before the last round that Friday morning.

Bet there was never another USCF event held at Storrs.>

Phony Benoni: <JB> Sorry; didn't read carefully enough. The Tigers are off today, so I'm concentrating on chess.
May-26-16  Jim Bartle: My family was traveling around western Canada in late August and early September of 1967. We'd get a newspaper every day to follow the incredible four-team American League race. It seemed Yastrzemski did something incredible every game, each game better than the next, either a clutch hit or two or a great play in the field. He was truly in the zone.

Oops. I had Yaz born in 1962 for some reason.

May-27-16  Boomie: ->

What the heck has got into the Mariners? They didn't seem that spectacularly better than last year. The starting rotation looked suspect. But the bullpen has been golden and after a scuffling April, everybody started hitting. Dae Ho Lee has been a pleasant surprise both at the plate and in the field. Plus we get to sing Day-O every time he comes to bat. The skipper has not made a false move yet. The team has great morale. I think Cano's sheer joy in the game is contagious.

perfidious: <Boomie> One of my teammates beat Seirawan in the third round of the National HS Championship at the old Bond Court Hotel in Cleveland.

We had got off to a poor start, with 1.5/4 in the first round despite all of us playing down, then pulled it together.

Four wins in the last round nailed down the team title, as we trailed going in. I managed to beat one of Seirawan's Garfield teammates, which proved critical to any hope of our success.

Phony Benoni: <Party Animal> Holy Cow! The Cubs have the best record in baseball? Mother Nature must feel fooled, but even she can't stop them.

The good news is the Tigers have finally crawled over .500, and are only two games out o first! The bad news is they are still in fourth place behind the Royals, who are starting to wake up.

Phony Benoni: Don't think I've seen this one before:

http://m.mlb.com/video/v745389783/d...

Not smart by the batter. And you'll note he was hitting right-handed.

May-28-16  Jim Bartle: I can't blame Martinez too much on that play. Why would he think the first baseman was going to throw home after a pop fly behind first? The throw was completely unnecessary, taking a silly risk of throwing it away.

Of course he should have been watching and gotten out of the way, but it is natural to feel down after failing to drive in a runner and he wasn't looking.

May-28-16  Party Animal: Phony, I seen Verlander had a real good outing! That has got to be what the Dr ordered.

Penguincw: Recently, Red Sox Jackie Bradley Jr. had his 29 game hit streak halted. It would've been the first 30+ game hitting streak since Dan Uggla back in 2011 (I remember that).

However, the 2nd longest active streak during JBJ's streak (and now longest active) belongs to another Red Sox - Xander Bogaerts (just extended it to 21).

In the history of MLB, the longest streak of reaching base safely is BoSox Ted Williams at 84 games. The longest active streak is by Marcell Ozuna of the Marlins; 34 games.

Meanwhile, across the ocean, a player named Lin Chih-Sheng just reached base safely in <100> games.

May-28-16  Jim Bartle: I had never heard of Williams' 84-game streak. I read "Summer of '49" and I don't think it was even mentioned. No big surprise given the level of the baseball understanding.

I looked up his 1949 season. .343 BA, .490 OBP, 150 runs, 159 RBIs. Amazing.

He won the MVP, but with only 13 of 24 first-place votes. Five voters picked Phil Rizzuto over Williams. Rizzuto hit .275 with a .352 OBP and 110 runs, 65 RBIs.

Rizzuto was known as a good shortstop, and he played the most important defensive position, while Williams was average at best at the least important position.

But the difference in production is huge. The only thing I can think is that back then writers valued "intangibles" like leadership more than they do today.

The Yankees won the pennant and the Sox didn't, but only by one game, and that on the final day.

May-28-16  Party Animal: Yo Phony, I found a rare Babe Ruth clip when Ruth supposedly hit his called shot against The Cubs. Check it out.

SwitchingQuylthulg: <Phony Benoni> Any chance you could double-check the prizes for Lone Pine (1973) and Lone Pine (1974)? The total prize fund in both years was c$5,500; but the 1973 prizes add up to c$5,584, and the 1974 prizes add up to c$5,400, so something seems to be off.

Phony Benoni: <SwitchingQuylthulg> I can't fully check those figures at the moment. Probably, I took the information from <The Best of Lone Pine> by John Grefe and Dennis Waterman. However, I don't own the book, and only borrowed it to work on the Lone Pine series

The <Chess Life> coverage of Lone Pine in those years does not mention the individual prizes. There are advertisements which list the project prize fund. The following is from January 1974, p.33, but the fund was the same in both years:

1st: $2000
2nd: $1250
3rd: $750
4th: %500
5th: $300
6th: $200
7th to 11th: $100 each

Using this, the payoffs in 1973 for 1st through 6th look correct, but 7th through 11th should have been $100 each, not $117. That's either a typo or some extremely fuzzy math.

In 1974, the payoffs listed for 1st through 10th look correct. The missing $100 was 11th place, which would have been split fourteen ways for a whopping $7.14 apiece. Grefe/Waterman may simply not have listed them to save space.

I think the figures could be changed with a high degree of confidence, but we still need to check Grefe / Waterman to see if any special circumstances were mentioned.
