Greetings, O Seeker After Knowledge! You have arrived in Dearborn, Michigan (whether you like it or not), and are reading words of wisdom from a player rated 2938--plus or minus 1000 points.

However, I've retired from serious play--not that I ever took playing chess all that seriously. You only have to look at my games to see that. These days I pursue the simple pleasures of finding games that are bizarre or just plain funny. I'd rather enjoy a game than analyze it.

For the record, my name is David Moody. This probably means nothing to you unless you're a longtime player from Michigan, though it's possible that if you attended any US Opens from 1975-1999 we might have crossed paths. Lucky you.

If you know me at all, you'll realize that most of my remarks are meant to be humorous. I do this deliberately, so that if my analysis stinks to High Heaven I can always say that I was just joking.

As you can undoubtedly tell from my sparkling wit, I'm a librarian in my spare time. Even worse, I'm a cataloger, which means I keep log books for cattle. Also, I'm not one of those extroverts who sit at the Reference Desk and help you with research. Instead, I spend all day staring at a computer screen updating and maintaining information in the library's catalog. The general public thinks Reference Librarians are dull. Reference Librarians think Catalogers are dull.

My greatest achievement in chess, other than tricking you into reading this, was probably mating with king, bishop and knight against king in a tournament game. I have to admit that this happened after an adjournment, and that I booked up like crazy before resuming. By the way, the fact I have had adjourned games shows you I've been around too long.

My funniest moment occurred when I finally got a chance to pull off a smothered mate in actual play. You know, 1.Nf7+ Kg8 2.Nh6+ Kh8 3.Qg8+ Rxg8 4.Nf7#. When I played the climactic queen check my opponent looked at the board in shocked disbelief and said, "But that's not mate! I can take the queen!"

Finally, I must confess that I once played a positional move, back around 1982. I'll try not to let that happen again.

Phony Benoni: Not a good recommendation for the DERLD. Out of 59 moves, White makes only three in Black's half of the board. And two of those conist of 3.Bb5 and 6.Bxc6.

Phony Benoni: Some more informztion. The game was published in <Chess Review>, March 1948, p. 23. Black's name is given as "M Kagan", and the location as "Massachusetts". There is no other game data, but I think we can now safely assume Black is <Milton Kagan>. Earlier in the ...

Phony Benoni: Well, here are the rules:

http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_inf...

The Designated Hitter rules start at section 5.11, p. 55. I think it says that a pitcher cannot be a DH, since once the DH takes the field the team loses its DH. But you can figure it out for yourself.

Jun-30-16  Jim Bartle: <(3) It is not mandatory that a club designate a hitter for the pitcher, but failure to do so prior to the game precludes the use of a Designated Hitter for that club for that game.>

All right. If the pitcher bats, it's effectively National League rules. Seems like a poor idea to give it up.

I noticed that the DH is only for pitchers. You can't DH for a slick-fielding, no-hit shortstop.

I also see that the DH must bat at least once. I think that's the "Earl Weaver Rule." Weaver used to put a starting pitcher (not pitching that day) in as DH, then make his choice when the turn at bat came up.

Jun-30-16  Party Animal: Yo Phony, we got The Mets tonight @ 6:10. They any good?

P.S. You have any of those rare baseball cards stocked away in your closet? ; P

WannaBe: This will be the first time a team intentionally not use a DH since 1976, when ChiSox let Ken Brett hit.

(In 2009, TB had a lineup card screw up and pitcher Andy Sonnanstine was forced to hit...)

MadBum is a right handed hitter, and Oakland's starter tonight Dillon Overton is a lefty.

Jun-30-16  Jim Bartle: Look <wb> it is <your> job on this page to inform about starting times for the College World Series. You have really fallen down not informing us the game is being played during the day.

Looks like we're set up for a walkoff win for Arizona. Behind 4-3 with men on second and third.

Jun-30-16  Jim Bartle: Nope, strikeout. Coastal Carolina wins.

Penguincw: While on the topic of pitchers hitting, I think a while ago I saw someone suggest a "Pitcher Home Run Derby", so a home run derby, but only for pitchers. Could be interesting to see guys like MadBum, Arrieta, Colon, etc. hit. After all, the Home Run Derby is kinda just batting practice, so let's see how the pitchers fare.

Q: Before calling Oakland home, A's called Kansas City home, before that, where did they call home?

A: E.T. call home?

Mike Norris of Oakland, leader of the brilliant staff that Billy Martin burned out in two years.

perfidious: <Jim: Mike Norris of Oakland, leader of the brilliant staff that Billy Martin burned out in two years.>

Yes, and I am the current third baseman for Red Sawx.

In all seriousness, I have wondered about that aspect of Martin as a manager. Fiery, thus a terrific short-term fix for any team, I do not recall his tendencies as an in-game manager. Did he have trouble handling a pitching staff, a la Dusty Baker, or was he closer to the Earl Weaver mould?

It was evident that those 1980-81 A's had some front-line talent (Henderson, Murphy and Armas to name several), but clearly could not compete with the powerhouse Royals or Yankees of the day.

Jul-01-16  Jim Bartle: Martin wore those pitchers out, wouldn't go to the bullpen.

Phony Benoni: <Party Animal> If I still had any of those rare cards, they would be worthless today. Probably like you and most other normal kids, I actually touched my cards, flipped them around, stacked them up, used them for drink coasters or bookmarks, and licked the excess bubble gum sugar off them.

If we wrecked one using i as a noise maker in the spokes of our bicycle, no big deal. There would be another one next year, with the same picture and updated stats. Joe Koppe never changed, and I had a million of him.
