WannaBe: <NakoSonorense> Not sure what (language) you will be programming/coding in... Open-source would probably be Eclipse. But it's gotten heavy and over-loaded with add-ons and plug-ins.

The other one is TextPad (free or paid, even paid is cheap). I know it sounds weird. But TextPad is probably the best editor I've ever used.

WannaBe: In my ever on-going battle with my arch-nemesis (No, not Elmer...) Ubuntu. Got this new HP Omen 880 and trying to install 16.04

Boots up to the menu okay, select 'Try Ubuntu without installing" or "Install Ubuntu" both ends up with black screen.

Googled around, the solution is to hi 'e' for edit at the menu, and add "nomodeset" after "quiet splash ---"

Ugh!

WannaBe: World Cup is less than a month away, first match between home Russia and Saudi will be June 14th.

<!!That means prediction contest!!>

1. Contest is conducted in two stages, group winners and match-play winner.

You have to pick 2 teams that will advance out of group play (does not matter first place or second place)

For each correct pick, you will be awarded (handsomely) <ONE POINT>.

16 points possible for this round.

2. Knock out stage. Once the bracket is set, you will be asked to predict each game's winner, all the way to the final. (Round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final game)

https://goo.gl/images/eaPgUJ

Round of 16 <TWO POINTS> for each correct pick
Quarter Finals <FOUR POINTS> for each
Semi-Finals <EIGHT POINTS> for each
Final <SIXTEEN POINTS> for picking the winner

In other words, 16 possible points will be up for grabs for each round, for a total of 80 points.

May-19-18  Dr Winston OBoogie: Here's my predictions although my WC knowledge is far superior to anyone else in the history of history ;)

Group A.. Egypt and Uruguay.

Group B. Spain and Portugal.

Group C. France and Australia.

Group D. Argentina (They have Messi!) and Croatia.

Group E. Brazil and Costa Rica.

Group F. Germany and Mexico.

Group G. England and Belgium.

Group H. Colombia and Poland.

Thanks, Wannabe :)

PS. Looks like Germany and Brazil could meet in the last 16 but only if one of them top their group and the other comes 2nd. Full schedule for the group games here https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/footbal...

May-20-18  Count Wedgemore: Hi there, <WannaBe>. A World Cup prediction contest, great! I wish Norway was there, but we haven't qualified in 20 years. And to make matters worse, my other favorite national team, Italy, failed to qualify also! I will root for Denmark (their head coach is Norwegian) and Iceland. Unfortunately, I don't think neither of them will do particularly well (hope I'm wrong, though).

And now (drum roll), here's my carefully crafted predictions:

Group A: Uruguay, Russia
Group B: Spain, Portugal
Group C: France, Peru
Group D: Argentina, Croatia
Group E: Brazil, Switzerland
Group F: Germany, Mexico
Group G: Belgium, England
Group H: Poland, Colombia

May-21-18  morfishine: Great idea <Wannabe> to break up the monotony! Chessbucks only goes so far! lol

Here are the advancing teams:

A: Russia, Uruguay
B: Portugal, Spain
C: France, Australia
D: Argentina, Croatia
E: Brazil, Serbia
F: Germany, Sweden
G: England, Belgium
H: Colombia, Japan

This contest was for predicting the score of each game.

This was for the final ranker:

<Overall Standings (Group Stage + Elimination Round)

Rank / ID / Stage 1 / Quarter / Semis / Final / 3rd / 1st / <Total>

1 / <NakoSonorense> / 13 / 30 / 40 / 40 / 35 / 50 / <208>

2 / <Jim Bartle> / 0 / 30 / 20 / 20 / 0 / 50 / <120>

3 / <dakgootje> / 12 / 35 / 30 / 40 / 0 / 0 / <117>

5 / <amadeus> / 0 / 35 / 20 / 0 / 0 / 0 / <55>

5 / <vonKrolock> / 0 / 35 / 20 / 0 / 0 / 0 / <55>

7 / <chessmoron> / 0 / 25 / 10 / 0 / 0 / 0 / <35>

8 / <fusilli> / 10 / 20 / 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 / <30>

9 / <Red October> / 13 / 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 / <13>

10 / <technical draw> / 12 / 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 / <13>

11 / <falso contacto> / 11 / 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 / 0 / <11>

____

It was all or nothing for <dakko>. Had Holland won today, he would have captured 1st place, I would have taken 2nd, and <percyblakeney> would have finished 3rd. But luckily for me and my ego, Spain won and <dak> had to take a well-deserved 2nd place. Congrats also to <Jim Bartle>, who thought that we would laugh at his predictions; but it turned out that he was the one who laughed last!>

<percyblakeney> won in 2006. I don't remember how far off I was then.

'10 <dakgootje> & <NakoSonorense> for predicting exact results and <NakoSonorense> for predicting the winners (which is what you're hosting)

and

'14 <Schwartz>
