TheAlchemist: <WannaBe> The first post is actually redundant, since Nako quotes himself in the last one which is more complete.

WannaBe: Page 66 of the book Bad Blood. Currently the story takes place before I got interested in Therano and founder E. Holmes.

So, absolutely fascinated and glued to this book so far. =))

WannaBe: Half way through Bad Blood, will probably finish tonight or tomorrow.

Oh, got laid off today, too.

May-22-18  morfishine: <Wannabe> Sorry about your layoff, I hope it is short term

I used my layoff to totally decompress. I never realized how much my stress level was elevated, just from work

WannaBe: <morfishine> Thanks, I know I will be enjoying a few days of unwind, get the ol' resume ready.

Already contacted a recruiter from Facebook that emailed me back in late 2016, he plays chess, went to San Jose State and was on their chess club.

Got some severance pay, so not starving, <YET>.

WannaBe: Okay, in the book Tyler Schultz have appeared, he is the grandaon of ex-secretary of state George and the eventual whistle blower.

Which also led to a strained relationship with his grandfather, who is a member on the board (of Theranos)

And this, around 2015 is where I got really, really interested in the story of Theranos.

WannaBe: Jumped the gun on that a little bit, story is still in 2012/2013...

WannaBe: According to kibitz search, my first mention of Theranos was in 2015, December...

<Not sure how many people here have been following the story of Theranos, but it's definitely getting interesting.>

I think, that is about the time sheet start to hit the 'fan'. As they say...

Always thought I'd been following this saga longer than that, either I am crazy, (most likely) or time just fly (by) faster...

May-23-18  Golden Executive: <WannaBe: World Cup is less than a month away, first match between home Russia and Saudi will be June 14th. <!!That means prediction contest!!>>

Great. I will be back to post my predictions. Go México! (oh well, I guess hope never dies :))

May-23-18  Caissanist: Was Theranos the biggest fraud in the history of Silicon Valley? There have been others, of course, but I can't think of anything else that was this big and this fake. I have to think that there's some kind of big bubble pop coming if this kind of thing can happen.

WannaBe: Finished Bad Blood. The book ends about 4 or 5 month ago when Theranos got another 100M fund and moved across the Bay to Fremont and that 100+ employee layoff

Book is a solid A+, the sheet Theranos lawyers did was absolutely unethical. Threats and law suits filed... Ugh

Group F: Germany, Mexico
Group G: England, Belgium
Group H: Poland, Colombia

Penguincw: I don't watch any soccer, but might end watching some of the World Cup, since everyone watches it and it might be a good idea to be on top of things.

Anyway, I have some questions about the knockout stage scoring.

Pretend in the Round of 16 the matchups are RUS-POR and ESP-URU, with the winner of RUS-POR facing the winner of ESP-URU.

Let's say I predict POR and ESP to win their matches, and POR beating ESP to advance to the semi-finals.

But in reality, POR and URU win, with POR winning that QF match.

So, would I receive any credit for predicting POR to win that QF match?

Also, are there any rules for making predictions that contradict each other? (Ex. predicting POR and ESP will win their QF matches but predicting RUS to win <a> QF match)?

May-28-18  Keyser Soze: Hi there

Here`s my World Cup 2018 Prediction:

Group A: Uruguay, Russia
Group B: Portugal, Spain
Group C: Denmark. France
Group D: Argentina, Croatia
Group E: Brazil, Switzerland
Group F: Germany, Mexico
Group G: Belgium. England
Group H: Poland, Colombia

May-28-18  Count Wedgemore: <Penguincw: Pretend in the Round of 16 the matchups are RUS-POR and ESP-URU, with the winner of RUS-POR facing the winner of ESP-URU.>

While awaiting <WannaBe> answering your questions about the scoring rules in this tournament, I would just like to point out that your example is based on a faulty premise: the winner of RUS-POR will not play the winner of ESP-URU. Actually, because Spain&Portugal (group B), and Russia&Uruguay (group A) are in the same group in the preliminary stages, they cannot face each other again until the very last game, i.e. the World Cup final.

You can see the tournament bracket here, for instance (wikipedia):

WannaBe: Answer: 2 pts for round of 16, and 4 pts for QF. If POR advances to Semi.

It does not matter that the other half of that bracket is "busted", to use NCAA tournament phrasing.

If you read the bracket or filled it incorrectly, it should be corrected ASAP. Just like all other prediction contests.

Most likely, if you made a mistake, someone will point out before knock out starts.

  Penguincw: Thanks!

But well, in that case better get in my predictions as soon as possible for maximum time to catch errors.

Group A: Russia, Uruguay
Group B: Portugal, Spain
Group C: France, Peru
Group D: Argentina, Iceland
Group E: Brazil, Costa Rica
Group F: Germany, Mexico
Group G: Belgium, England
Group H: Poland, Colombia

May-29-18  paavoh: Hi Wannabe, only now I realize that there have been, and now again will be, a World Cpp prediction contest!

Yay, can I play too? Feels like old times...

Stage 1 predictions:

Group A: Uruguay, Egypt
Group B: Portugal, Spain
Group C: France, Denmark
Group D: Argentina, Croatia
Group E: Brazil, Switzerland
Group F: Germany, Mexico
Group G: Belgium, England
Group H: Poland, Colombia

And good luck to everyone!

May-30-18  paavoh: A tidbit about countries and rankings.
The countries with most players among top-50 chess players (May 31, 2700chess.com) are: RUS (12), CHN (6), AZE & USA (4) and UKR (3). Two players for BUL, ENG, FRA, HUN, IND and ISR.
May-30-18  Dr Winston OBoogie: Wannabe. Given that Salah got injured in the UCL final at the weekend (Egypt's best player and only hope) am I cool to change my prediction for that group? If so I'd like to predict that the United States of Russia get through at the Egyptians expense :)
