Jul-31-11  positionalgenius: <SM> Yes, tournaments Like dortmund 2001 were "nothing but a joke". For kasparov fanboyism at its finest,You amaze me sir.
Jul-31-11  vanytchouck: About comparing Kasparov’s « Linareses » and Kramnik’s « Dortmunds » here are some figures that might help :

In order to « properly compare » tournaments through ages, i’ve try two calculus.

« Vanyt 1 » ;-) wich is (MA/AT – 1)*1000 where :

* MA is the maximum average elo possible on the rating list at the moment of the tournament ;

* AT is the average elo of the tournament.

With 92 super tournaments from 1983 (Niksic) to 2011 (Dortmund 2011), here is the top 10 :

# 1. Las Palmas (1996) => 0.91
# 2. Linares 1998 => 2.34
# 3. Linares 1999 => 2.88
# 4. Linares 1993 => 3.2
# 5. Tal Memorial 2009 => 3.26
# 6. Reggio Emilia 1991/92 => 3.36
# 7. Linares 2000 => 3.75
# 8. Linares 1991 => 3.76
# 9. Mexico 2007 (WC) => 4.27
# 10. San Luis 2005 (F.I.D.E. WC) => 4.51

And here is the top 10 if you only take the "Linareses" won by Kasparov dans the "Dortmunds" won by Kramnik :

#3. Linares 1999 (Kasparov) => 2.88
#4. Linares 1993 (Kasparov) => 3.2
#12. Linares 1992 (Kasparov) => 4.7
#23. Linares 2005 (Kasparov & Topalov) => 6.82
#26. Dortmund 2001 (Kramnik & Topalov) => 7.32
#28. Linares 1997 (Kasparov) => 7.56
#45. Dortmund 2009 (Kramnik) => 11.84
#47. Linares 2002 (Kasparov) => 11.96
#49. Linares 1990 (Kasparov) => 12.52
#51. Dortmund 2007 (Kramnik) => 12.88

I didn't count the Linares 2000 as it can't be used "against" Kramnik who was tied first with Kasparov !

As expected (at least by me), Linares won are a kind of greater than the Dortmund but we mustn't forget that Anand and Topalov (among other super GMs like Karpov, Ivantchouk, Carlsen) were usual Kramnik's opponents at Dortmund.

Jul-31-11  vanytchouck: With « Vanyt 2 » (the other attempt), it’s roughly the same.

« Vanyt 2 » is AR/BA where :

* AR is the average of the rank of the contenders ;
* BA is the best average possible.

The top 10 according to « Vanyt 2 » is :

# 1. Las Palmas => 1.05
# 2. Linares 1998 => 1.16
# 3. Reggio Emilia 1991/92 => 1.22
# 4. Tal Memorial 2009 => 1.3
# 5. Dortmund 2001 => 1.31
# 6. Linares 1999 => 1.36
# 7. Dos Hermanas 1996 => 1.47
# 8. Linares 1995 => 1.64
# 9. Wijk Aan Zee 2008 => 1.66
# 10. Mexico 2007 (WC) => 1.67

And the « top 10 » of the tournaments wich are interesting us is :

# 5. Dortmund 2001 => 1.31
# 6. Linares 1999 => 1.36
# 13.Linares 1993 => 1.74
# 18.Linares 1997 => 1.78
# 30.Linares 2005 => 2.14
# 33.Linares 1992 => 2.25
# 39.Dortmund 1998 => 2.7
# 49.Linares 2002 => 3.14
# 55.Dortmund 2009 => 3.52
# 56.Linares 1990 => 3.63

This index is slightly more favourable to Vladimir, but it still give the clear edge to Kasparov.

Jul-31-11  jussu: Told you ;)
Jul-31-11  geeker: Kramnik is certainly not playing it safe vs. Naka in R10!
Jul-31-11  geeker: But it now looks like the complications will fizzle out into liquidation and a drawish endgame...
Jul-31-11  bartonlaos: "If you don't use it, you lose it."

Following Bazna, Nakamura spent a little less than month away from his training regimen for the WSOP, leaving about 4 days to get back into shape for Dortmund.

Jul-31-11  Layson: Seems to me like Nakamura was practically daring Kramnik to sack on g5. Its the kind of juicy tempting sack that anybody with an attacker's instinct make without thinking in a blitz game. Hardly the context here, but still.

Chalk one up for resourceful defence on the king side in a KID.

Jul-31-11  shach matov: <Nakamura spent a little less than month away from his training regimen for the WSOP, leaving about 4 days to get back into shape for Dortmund>

and after such a long leave he is murdering Kramnik right now. somebody call the police, there is a crime going on in Dortmund!

Jul-31-11  hchrist: Krammnik is winning. Pawn strucuture will rock...
Jul-31-11  geeker: Maybe 32. N:d6 would have led to liquidation, but 32. Ng5 caused the evaluation to go sharply negative. OMG!! Now Vlad's wonderful TPR will be spoiled!!!
Jul-31-11  shach matov: Complete domination by Naka... Kramnik after one of his best tourneys in a long time, will not sleep very well tonight. A crushing loss against Naka is like an icing made of manure for a otherwise nice cake.
Jul-31-11  zoren: whats Nakamura's performance now?
Jul-31-11  bronkenstein: Bravo Vlad! Just keep on playing like that , back in the 90s =).

If the next candidates final happens to be DRR 3-1-0 , this approach will truly shine there.

Jul-31-11  JoergWalter: it is a nice consolation to have beaten the winner in a otherwise disappointing tournament. thanks to both players for an exciting game.
Jul-31-11  sandtime: If 3points for a win 1 point for a draw, then would Pono come out ahead of liem and Giri or cant I add?
Jul-31-11  JoergWalter: <sandtime> your arithmetic is flawless.
Jul-31-11  themaverick: shach matov: Complete domination by Naka...
lolx
Krmnik could have easily drawn at move 32 by N*d6 btw
Jul-31-11  Nina Myers: <shach matov: Complete domination by Naka... lolx > This 7 year old boy surely lives in his own world.
Jul-31-11  frogbert: hm, why does kramnik feel obliged to make unsound piece sacrifices against nakamura, i wonder? 2nd time in less than a year! maybe he wanted too much to arrive at a 2800+ official rating again?

anyway, kudos to naka for fending off the attack and making a good finish in dortmund. :o)

Jul-31-11  DrMAL: Giri turned 17 a few weeks ago, fabulous performance by him. Naka burned up my Chessbucks on here (sob) but he had a good finish. Amazing play (sans last game) by Kramnik!
Jul-31-11  nimh: My guess is that Kramnik was desperate to prove to Naka that he can beat him in whatever type of game. If he persists, sooner or later this will succeed, but he'd have a minus score with Naka then. Naturally, being already the winner of the tournament made the decision easier.
Jul-31-11  redwhitechess: Le Quang Liem is the only undefeated! and true spirit of Dortmund (a usual drawish tournament, not this year....LOL)
Jul-31-11  AuN1: kramnik kind of embarrassed himself today. it is hard to root for him when he plays that recklessly and carelessly.
Jul-31-11  positionalgenius: <Aun1> Go ahead and go back to topalov then, please.
