Hastings 1957/58

The 33rd Hastings Christmas Chess Festival was held from December 27, 1957 to January 6, 1958. Ten grandmasters and masters were invited to compete a round robin format at the premier event. The notable participants of this edition included previous Hastings winners Svetozar Gligoric, Paul Keres, and Dr. Jonathan Penrose. Keres lost to Gligoric, but yielded only half a point against the rest of the field. His +6 score secured him first place by a full point, his second victory at Hastings.

Jan-10-16  pazzed paun: This would have been a very different tournament if Bobby Fischer had played as he originally planned instead of the USA championship

Yes, yes, he won his first U.S. championship at that age, but Hastings was certainly a tougher event.

Didn't know he'd considered playing at Hastings though.

I'd say he was. He played them in Zürich the following year and finished tied for third with Keres (whom he beat) and half a point behind Gligoric (who beat him), and again in the Candidates where he drew both (all games vs Keres were black wins, curiously).

Oct-18-16  Retireborn: In those days (and for years afterwards) the playing conditions at Hastings were rather poor, unfortunately. Had Fischer played he might not have completed the tournament.
May-03-18  Nosnibor: Apparently Rossolimo was also invited but withdrew shortly before the start.
