O Kaila vs Vladimir Petrov, 1936

==============

Vladimir Petrov (kibitz #1068)

Latvia-Finland student team match, Helsinki, 13-14 May 1936: I found a full table of this event here ("Rigasche Rundschau", 23 May 1936, page 5):

http://www.periodika.lv/periodika2-...

V. Petrovs beat Osmo Kaila 2-0;
L. Endzelins beat Syvanen 2-0;
K. Ozols beat A. Luhm is the first game and drew the second; Tenis Melngailis beat L. Viiske in the first game and drew the second; Total 7-1 in favour of Latvia.

Also, the dates you had for this event are out by one day - it is 13-14 May 1936 (not 14-15 May 1936), as given in this item and confirmed by "Rits", 15 May 1936, page 19.

This also means the date you had for the Osmo Kaila-Petrovs game is out by one day - it should be 14 May 1936 (not 15 May 1936), as given in "Krustamikla, Sahs, Bridzs", 30 May 1936, pages 347-8.

Another reference to the event, which gives the initials of the bottom two Finnish boards, is "Juanakas Zinas", 18 May 1936, page 5.

=============

Match between students teams Latvia and Finland. Latvia team defeated Finland students 7:1. 1st day 4:0, 2nd day 3:1. On the 1st board Petrov-Kaila +2 -0 =0.

===============

Vladimir Petrov (kibitz #1048)

chesshistoryinterest: I believe the Helsinki 1936 Latvia-Finland student match was originally supposed to be the first of these, but it must have fallen through.

First SELL (Suomi Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) Student Olympiad, Riga, 15-18 March 1937: A couple of corrections to dates:

The Finnish team was delayed due to "severe ice conditions in the Gulf of Finland". ("Paewaleht", 16 March 1937, page 3)

https://dea.digar.ee/cgi-bin/dea?a=...

and only arrived in Riga at 7am on the 17th March 1937 ("Jaunakas Zinas", 18 March 1937, page 5)

http://www.periodika.lv/periodika2-...

This necessitated a change in schedule, which became:

15 March 1937
Latvia-Estonia (won by Latvia 4-0) (Raud-Petrovs 0-1)

16 March 1937
Lithuania-Estonia (won by Lithuania 3.5-0.5 after a completed adjournment on the 18th)

17 March 1937, 10am
Finland-Lithuania (won by Finland 2.5-1.5)

17 March 1937, 6:30pm
Finland-Estonia (won by Finland 3.5-0.5 after a completed adjournment on the 18th);

and Latvia-Lithuania (won by Latvia 3.5-0.5) (Petrovs-Vaitonis 1-0)

17 March 1937, 6:30 pm

18 March 1937, 10:30am
Adjournment Vistaneckis-Jogi 1-0
Adjournment Kaila-Raud 1-0

18 March 1937, evening
Latvia-Finland (won by Latvia 3-1) (Petrovs-Kaila 1-0)

Thus the finish date of the event is 18 March 1937, not 17 March 1937. This confirmed by "Rigasche Rundschau", 27 March 1937, page 18

http://www.periodika.lv/periodika2-...

And the date of Petrovs-Vaitonis is 17 March 1937, not 16 March 1937;

And the date of Petrovs-Kaila is 18 March 1937, not 17 March 1937.

(also, Raud's first name is Ilmar; for the sake of completeness, this could be added to the pgn of the Raud-Petrovs game.)

######################

Vladimir Petrov (kibitz #1070)

Each team had a reserve who did not play:
Latvia: Tenis Melngailis
Finland: O. Hankipahija
Lithuania: J. Tinovskis
Estonia: V. Suursoot
(Sources: "Rits", 12 March 1937, page 6, and "Postimees", 15 March 1937, page 5.) That Tenis Melngailis could only make the reserve position in the Latvian team shows how strong that team was. The Estonians, on the other hand, were quite weak, and this was commented on in one or two of the Estonian newspapers.

The original Draw was: 1. Estonia 2. Latvia 3. Lithuania 4. Finland ("Rits", 16 March 1937, page 3). Due to the late arrival of the Finns, it looks as though the intended Round 1 was transferred to 17 March, 6:30pm.

Vladimir Petrov (kibitz #1074)

Latvia won this event with 7/12;
Estonia was second with 6/12;
and Lithuania and Finland were 3-4= with 5.5/12. The Kaila (Finland) - Raud (Estonia) game from Round 1 was adjourned several times and at 125 moves and 15 hours play had still not been completed. Raud had to leave to go to Riga for the full country Estonia-Latvia match (24-26 February 1939), so the game had to be adjudicated. It was adjudicated a draw and only then were the placings of all the teams other than Latvia known.

I did not find any Petrovs games. His loss with Black to Vaitonis in Round 1 is given as being 29 moves long ("Postimees", 21 February 1939, page 8), and he choosing an "Indian defence" ("Rits", 20 February 1939, page 11). His draw with Black against Raud in Round 2 is given as being 31 moves long ("Postimees", 22 February 1939). Possible further sources for Petrovs games could be (1) Finnish newspapers. These are online only to 1929 at present. (2) The Latvian chess magazine "Saha Maksla". This is online only to 15 January 1939 at present, but ran until August 1939.
