Aug-10-14  MarkFinan: <jdc2: White doesn't have to play Bxh4 so it's really a "Black wins material or mates" problem> That's exactly what I thought! No wonder it's classed as Insane, lol ✌
Aug-10-14  thegoodanarchist: I really appreciated Steinitz' notes, along with the high-level combination

FSR: Thanks for the compliments, <Once> and <patzer2>.
Aug-11-14  TheBish: Definitely one of the most brilliant sacrificial games I've ever seen. Morphy would have been proud!

While playing Guess the Move for this game, I guessed 18...Bg4 -- instead of 18...Ng4 as played by Gossip, which Steinitz called a waste of time -- and I was penalized a point! Instead I should have been given a full 3 points (as is often done).

Aug-11-14  TheBish: Correction: I wasn't penalized a point (see my previous note), but was given no points. So you don't always get credit for moves superior to the actual game!
Dec-06-14  RookFile: This game is good example of how an early push like 7. e5 is a bad idea.
Apr-24-17  ChessHigherCat: Wow, Hatfield was the real McCoy! Hatfeild must be a typo by the way.

It is odd. I feel sorry for the English teachers at that school when they teach the I before E rule.

I am lucky, I was always a good speller. The only word I have constant trouble with is <separate>. I often write <seperate>.

Yet another misspelling: the principle of capitalism is spelled "I before He".

<I am lucky, I was always a good speller. The only word I have constant trouble with is <separate>. I often write <seperate>>

Really now, that's too much. The camera you're thinking of is spelled "Super 8". Or were you thinking of the spotty word "suppurate"?

Finally, I should inform you that I am all too aware of your place of residence for I am your neighbor and I beseech you, one last time. to remove that unsightly gyrocopter wreckage from my property before I am forced to contact the local constabulary!

All on must do is to spell separate is to remember there is a rat in the middle of it.

sep <a rat> e

offramp: The Gossip is that Jackson Whipps Showalter.
Apr-24-17  ChessHigherCat: <offramp: The only word I have constant trouble with is <separate>. I often write <seperate>

More pedantically, you can remember that separate comes from "se (away from) parare (pare/cut/prepare)" = pare away. Incidentally, when I was working on some publishing project I asked my new girlfriend on the team why she hadn't preferred this really handsome teenage guy over me and she said (I kid you not) that he was the kind of guy who wrote "seperate". That was apparently an even greater faux pas in her eyes than confusing the crab cracker with the fondue fork. Not sure what the moral of that story is, but let it be a lesson to you!

tamar: So, ChessHigherCat, what is the root of desperate, is it despair, and how come it got the e in the middle?
Apr-24-17  ChessHigherCat: <tamar> That's what etymologists refer to as an STBD [Same Thang But Diffurnt!] esperare/espoir = to hope des+esperare = to abandon all hope, you who enter here.

tamar: ChessHigherCat STBD I like that. I guess the correct comparison is with disparate, which has the same root.
Apr-24-17  morfishine: Seper is too close to leper, so presto: separ

Apr-24-17  catlover: Maybe someone misspelled "Whipps". Seems like there shouldn't be a double "p".

Just kidding...

Great GOTD. New kibitzers ought to check out the wikipedia link above on page 3 (I think) of the previous postings above to see a biography of Gossip. Fellow kibitzer <FSR> wrote it and other wikipedia articles about chess.

Apr-24-17  ChessHigherCat: <catlover>: Thanks for turning me on to <FSR's> article, which teaches us that Gossip, whose talents were in no way limited to chess, was also an accomplished antisemite and megalomaniac.

Yeah...the article made for really interesting reading, but Gossip was not exactly "Man of the Year" material. To be fair, he probably wasn't the first or last strong chess player to have an ego problem.

Apr-24-17  morfishine: If this really is "Gossip's Immortal", then please delete the lame "Juicy Gossip" and replace it with the more worthy title

Dec-20-21  Whitehat1963: I hear Steinitz loved the final combination, but that might be idle gossip.
