Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-15-08  Knight13: 22. e4... A mistake, maybe?
Nov-03-10  soothsayer8: An inaccuracy, I'd say, the real mistake seems to be 23. Qe5? Which loses the pawn.

Calli: A great escape by Alekhine. He got a lost game by trying to hold the pawn by 15.Bf3 etc and soon Euwe's rook was on d3. Alekhine's 23.Qe5! is a terrific idea. He gives up the pawn for initiative. Euwe finds all the right moves leading up to 24...Rxd2! which wins the pawn. Euwe criticizes 29...Kf8?!. Instead 29...Bb7 30.Rd4 a5 and the position is more of a routine win. Now with the B pawn gone, the win is more difficult. In time trouble, Max Euwe misses his last chance with 39...Bxe4? instead 39...Kc6 40.Nc3 Bxg2 41.Rxg7 Rf3+ 42.Kd2 Bf1 43.Rxh7 Rxf4 44.Rxa7 Rh4 wins. A great battle and an unsung game, probably because it is a draw.

  tamar: Even sharper was 28...b3 29 Nf3 (if 29 Nc6 b2) g5 ( not takeable because of ...Rc2) 30 Nd4 Rc1+ 31 Kf2 gxf4 when the b pawn is protected by tactics.

eg 32 Nxb3 Rf1# or 32 Kf3 Rc4 33 Nxb3 Rc3+ winning the knight

One can imagine Alekhine sitting there trying to remain calm while undoubtedly seeing most of these variations.

Calli: <Tamar> Excellent! I don't think anyone has ever mentioned this line before. Have updated Game Collection: Alekhine was sunk! with your analysis.

tamar: thanks <Calli> Did Alekhine ever annotate this match?

Calli: <Tamar> Yes, there is a match book by AA & Euwe. Alekhine's annotations are translated in Skinner & Verhoeven. He did not annotate every game. Games AA annotated: 1-9, 11, 13, 16, 18, 19, 22, 24, 25, 27-29.

AnalyzeThis: I can't believe Euwe didn't win this game. Alekhine defended tenaciously, but he had no business getting a draw out of this.

Pawn and Two: <Calli & Tamar> The match book I have is titled, "Euwe vs. Alekhine - Match 1935", by Euwe & Alekhine. It is a 1973 Chess Digest edition, translated from the 1936 Soviet edition.

Calli, at first I thought my book would match the material you were referring to, but in my book, each player annotated 15 games, with Alekhine annotating games: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 16, 18, 19, 22, 24, 27, 28, & 29.

This list differs from your list for games: 2, 6, 8, 13 & 25. In the Chess Digest book, the wording used in the notes for games 2, 6, 8, & 25 indicate it is Euwe making the comments.

Also, the Chess Digest notes for games 2, 8 & 13 closely follow those from Euwe's book, "From My Games - 1920-1937".

I wonder if the annotations by Skinner & Verhoeven match those in the Chess Digest edition. A closer examination of the notes, especially for the five games that differ, may resolve this question.

Calli: <P+2> Thanks for the info. I'll check it tonight. I may have erred in the numbering or Skinner may have referenced another source on some games.

Calli: Okay, somehow I scrambled the numbers and posted a bogus list. Maybe I'll start a "The Kibitzer Was Drunk!" collection. My list agrees with yours: 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, 11, 16, 18, 19, 22, 24, 25, 27, 28, 29 with one addition. Game 25 has annotations by AA from Chess, the Britsh magazine.
