The N has only 3 squares for retreat h1, h5, and e2 all allow 18….Be4 when the mating threats 19……Qg2# and Qh1# are unanswerable. Perhaps sacrificing the Nf5+ blocking the B from e4 may work.

You are right. But I'd not say that black attack was unsound at least from the beginning.
Certainly, everybody likes <childish> move 8...Qh4, even the theory doesn't recommend to move the queen too early, and too far.
Nevertheless, black could play 10...Be4 to improve the pos. of his bishop.
After 11.Rg1 Nxe5 and maybe 0-0-0.
Certainly when you build the attack, you should remember that <safety of his king> is the first goal.
And the move 18.Bxd5 to protect "g2" square required the good imagination when you play OTB, and see it from black side is not too easy. |

Rad1 Qf3 20. Rd7+ Kf6 that now black has problems on the f-file with queen and king. Still don't see the finish however. |
