Mar-27-12 | | DrChopper: Seriously, I don't see what can do white after: 18.Bxd5 Qxg3+ 19.Kh1 Qxh3+ 20.Kg1 Nxg4 If 21.Qf4 then Bd6. |

Jun-16-13 | | morfishine: I don't see White forcing mate or winning decisive material or achieving a decisive positional advantage after <18...Qxd5> despite the hole at d7 |

 | | Willber G: Solved it, first Sunday of the year! (But I thought it was easier than Friday...) <morfishine: I don't see White forcing mate or winning decisive material or achieving a decisive positional advantage after <18...Qxd5> despite the hole at d7> I think 19.R(a)d1 is enough. |
|
Jun-16-13 | | morfishine: <Wilbur G> You commented <I think 19.R(a)d1 is enough> After 18.Bxd5 Qxd5 19.Rad1 Qe5 20.Rd7+ <20...Kf6> I don't see an immediate win
for White, though he's up an exchange; Meanwhile, Black has some annoying threats like Qxg3 and Ra8 18...exd5 opening the e-file has to be much worse |
|
Jun-16-13 | | James D Flynn: Material is equal but Black has threats that require attenti is answered by Bxf2 on: 18…dxc4 and far more serious 18…..Qxg3+. The N on g3 cannot be defended: 18.Kh2 is answered by Bxf2 renewing the threat on the N. The N has only 3 squares for retreat h1, h5, and e2 all allow 18….Be4 when the mating threats 19……Qg2# and Qh1# are unanswerable. Perhaps sacrificing the Nf5+ blocking the B from e4 may work.
18.Nf5+ exf5 19.Rae1+ Kd8 20.Bxd5(not 20.Nc6+bxc6 21.Qa8+ Kc7 22.Kd6 and White runs out of useful checks) Qg3+ 21,Bg2 and no w the Black K is stuck in the centre exposed to the combined attack of the R on e1 the Q the N on a7 and if he ever stray back to the e file, the R on f1.
That is all have time for, but clearly after 18,Nf5+ Black should take with B or N rather than pawn. |
|
Jun-16-13 | | Patriot: White is currently up a rook, while the c5-bishop and g3 knight hang. After looking at this for a while, 18.Bxd5 seems the only reasonable candidate to gain time. 18.Bxd5
18...Qxg3+ 19.Bg2 seems better for white.
18...Qxd5 - I'm not sure what's next here. 19.Rad1 Qf3 and I think white has some problems since 20.Qd7+/Rd7+ Kf6. Perhaps 20.Kh2 is key here. 18.Bxd5 is my move. |
|
Jun-16-13 | | Patriot: This is one of those rare instances where knowing the initial material count makes a huge difference in knowing which candidates are reasonable. For example, with even material 18...Qxg3+ 19.Bg2 is not so great for white. |

|
Jun-16-13 | | Patriot: <torro> <why not simply 18...Qxg3+???> Because 19.Bg2 leaves white with a big material advantage. |
|
Jun-16-13 | | devere: 18.Bxd5! saves White. Aside from the game continuation there is 18...Qxg3+ 19.Bg2, and 18...Qxd5, 19.R(a)d1, Qf3, 20.Rd7+, and now on either Kf6 or Kf8, 21.Kh2 works for White since Black cannot capture on f2 with his Bishop without a fatal Queen check by White. |
|
Jun-16-13 | | agb2002: White has one rook, one bishop and one knight for the bishop pair. Black threatens 18... Qxg3+ 19.Kh1 Be4+ 20.f3 Qxh3# and 18... dxc4. The first idea that comes to mind is 18.Bxd5:
A) 18... Qxg3 19.Bg2
A.1) 19... Ra8 20.Qb5 (20.Rad1 Rxa7 21.Qd7+ Kf6 - +; 20.b4 Be4 - +; 20.Nc6+ bxc6 21.Qxa8 Be4 - +) A.1.a) 20... Bxa7 21.Qxb7+ Kf6 22.Qxa8 + -.
A.1.b) 20... Rxa7 21.Qxc5+ Qd6 22.Qxa7 + -.
A.1.c) 20... b6 21.Qxc5+ bxc5 (21... Qd6 22.Qxd6+ Kxd6 23.Bxa8 + -) 22.fxg3 Rxa7 23.a3 + -. A.1.d) 20... Qc7 21.Nc6+ (21.Qxb7 Qxb7 22.Bxb7 Rxa7 23.Bf3 should also win) 21... bxc6 (21... Kd6 22.Rfd1+ mates in two) 22.Qxc5+ Qd6 (22... Kf6 23.g5#) 23.Qxd6+ Kxd6 24.Rfd1+ + -. A.2) 19... Nxg4 20.hxg4 h5 21.Qb4 Qc7 (21... Qxg2+ 22.Kxg2 Bxb4 23.cxb4 + -) 22.Qxb7 + -. A.3) 19... Rd8 20.Qb4 as in A.2.
B) 18... Qxd5 19.Rad1
B.1) 19... Qf3 20.Rd4 blocks the diagonal but it's unclear. B.2) 19... Bd3 20.Rxd3 Qxd3 21.Ne4 with the double threat 22.Nxc5 and 22.Rd1. C) 18... exd5 19.Rae1+
C.1) 19... Be4 20.Nxe4 dxe4 21.Rxe4+ looks winning.
C.2) 19... Kd6 20.Nb5+ and 21.Nd4+ wins the queen.
C.3) 19... Kd8 20.Nc6+ Kc7 (20... bxc6 21.Qa5+ grabs Black's dsb) 21.Nd4 looks advantageous for White. I have considered other options but they don't look as active as 18.Bxd5. |

Jun-16-13 | | M.Hassan: "Insane"
White to play 18.?
White is up by a Rook.
If it were Black's move:
<1...Qxg3+ 2.Kh1 Qxh3+ 3.Kg1 Nxg5 and mate next move by Qh2#> So, White has to make a move to prevent mate:
18.Bxd5
<if...Qxg3+ 19.Bd2 and mate no longer is possible> 18..........exd5
19.Kh2 Bxe2
20.Rae1+
A)
20..........Kf6
21.Nh1 with a threat of next Rxf2 and capture the pinned Queen.
21..........Qd3 run away before it is captured
22.Qf4+ Bf5
23.Qxf2 g6
24.gxf6 Nxf6
25.Ng3
And White is much better.
Another variation:
B)
18.Bxd5 exd5
19.Rae1+ Kd6
20.Nb5+ Kc5 or d5
21.Nd4+
And picks up the Queen next
Third Variation:
C)
18.Bxd5 exd5
19.Rae1+ Kd8
20.Qa5+ Kd7
21.Qxc5
Now, Black's threat of mae is gone and White threatens mate by <22.Re7+ Kd8 23.Qc7#>
22.........Qf6
23.Qxd5+ Qd6
24.Qxb7+ Qd7
25.Re7+ Kxe7
26.Qxc7
1-0

Jun-16-13 | | BOSTER: <Sneaky>
<Games aren't just won by launchig sound attack they are also won by defending against unsound ones>.
You are right. But I'd not say that black attack was unsound at least from the beginning.
Certainly, everybody likes <childish> move 8...Qh4, even the theory doesn't recommend to move the queen too early, and too far.
Nevertheless, black could play 10...Be4 to improve the pos. of his bishop.
After 11.Rg1 Nxe5 and maybe 0-0-0.
Certainly when you build the attack, you should remember that <safety of his king> is the first goal.
And the move 18.Bxd5 to protect "g2" square required the good imagination when you play OTB, and see it from black side is not too easy. |
|
Jun-16-13 | | Dr. Funkenstein: I saw Bxd5 of course since it's the only forcing move for white and the only reasonable way to defend against Qxg3+, but I couldn't see the right follow after 18. ...Qxd5 because I didn't see after 19. Rad1 Qf3 20. Rd7+ Kf6 that now black has problems on the f-file with queen and king. Still don't see the finish however. |
