 | | sachistu: This version was given in SvSSSR/1954 and other sources, but yet other sources including the tournament book give 27.Bd2! (exclamation from the tournament book). Josef Marsalek in his tournament book notes says this move (27.Bd2) threatens 28.Bc3 and 28.Ba5. He goes on to say that 27.Bd2 has the same effect as 27.Bb2 Rxb2 28.Rxf6, so apparently the thinking was to avoid ...Rxb2, but that is unnecessary as 27.Bb2 Rxb2 28.Rxf6! leads to mate. Although, I generally trust the tournament book, it's not clear if a correction slip is warranted in this case. |

Sep-17-18
 | | sachistu: I neglected to mention the tournament book has Black resigning after 27.Bd2. In some ways, that version has some validity in that GM's do not usually play all the way to mate. |
|
Sep-17-18 | | Retireborn: <sachistu> My instinct would be to trust the tournament book; magazines such as SvSSR are more likely to give the flashiest finish as if it was the game continuation. |
|
Sep-18-18
 | | sachistu: Thanks for your input <Retireborn>. One other point in the favor of the tournament book version is that the tournament was in Czechoslovakia (Prague - Marianske Lazne) and thus Marsalek (a contributor to Czechoslovensky Sach) would likely have had access to the tournament bulletins and perhaps even the score sheets. I could not find the game in Szabo's games book, which would have provided another confirming source. Even though the version given here (and in SvSSSR) is prettier, I'm inclined to believe the tournament book version is the one that was actually played. I will probably go ahead with issuing a correction slip. |

 | | Knighthawkmiller: White's move 27. Bb2 was genius. If that move had not been given, then this may not have been a Monday problem. |
|
Mar-28-22 | | agb2002: White is a bishop and a pawn down.
The rook on e6 and the black queen prevents Qd7+. Therefore, 28.Rxf6+: A) 28... Qxf6 29.Qd7+ Kf8 (29... Qe7 30.Qxe7#) 30.Re8#. B) 28... Kg7 29.Rf7+ (or 29.Qg6+ Kh8 30.Qxh6#) 29... Kh7 30.R(Q)h7#. |

 | | Teyss: <Knighthawkmiller> Yes 27.White to move would have been a nice mid-week puzzle. Bb2 leads to mate in all variations. Note the importance of the h5 Pawn for the combination; if it weren't here, it wouldn't work: 28.Rxf6+? Qxf6 29.Qd7+ Kg6 30.Re6 Rxf2 and Black's 2Rs+Ps will be stronger than the WQ (SF -4.7 at 34 ply). click for larger view |

Mar-28-22 | | TheaN: <sachistu: I neglected to mention the tournament book has Black resigning after 27.Bd2. In some ways, that version has some validity in that GM's do not usually play all the way to mate.> Interesting. Bb2 is a lot more flashy and frankly faster, but Bd2 is pragmatic, something that follows a logical (rather than wild) plan. Of course the played out version is more pleasing on the eye, but if this is the case this one should be corrected still. |

 | | Jimfromprovidence: Kibitzers might be interested in why playing 26 Rfe1, below, is so much better than 26 Bb2. click for larger viewIt's because after 26 Bb2 Rxb2 27 Rfe1 black's rook can retreat to b8, minimizing loss of material. click for larger view |

Beautiful deflection. |

Mar-28-22 | | johnnydeep: Sadly, I failed to solve this "easy" Monday puzzle. Lots of available Queen and rook combo moves always seem to multiply the possibilities too much for me. |
