Nov-07-05		notsodeepthought: I guess I'm missing the clincher - 29 ... Kf8 30 Rd8+ Be8 and how would white continue? 31 Re1 could be followed by Re5; or 31 Rd7 could be countered by Rc7. Can you point out the right continuation?

Mar-22-06		Fezzik: This was a beautiful combo. Just for the record, I saw: 28.Nf5+ ef5 29.Ref5+ Kg8 30.Rd8+ Be8 31.R1d7! Rg7 (what else) 32.Re7 and mate's unavoidable.

A lot of members here look through the archive of knowledge (games) and make comments like: "Great puzzle for _______ from move ____" Then CG.com uses it, wish we/us as members can get some 'compensation' for spotting gems like these. Just an idea... Back to kibitzin' some more so I can break <acirce>'s record...

Mar-22-06		Fezzik: In reply to notsodeep: Thanks for pointing out the better defensive move, 31...Rc7. I saw 30.Rxc6, but didn't realise it was absolutely necessary when I ran through the position. Good catch!

Mar-22-06		Zaius: It was the first move I considered, and it's the move I went with. I must admit I did not go through the line, but just assumed it was winning.

Mar-22-06		simsan: I looked at 28 exf6 for a while but realized that the K escapes after Kxf6. It took me a while to see that the white pawn on f6 would be protected by the rook after 28.Nf5+ exf5 29.exf6. Calculating the possible lines was made a little easier by the fact that regardless of whether black takes the knight or not, white will be controlling the key squares g7 and e7 with either the pawn or the knight. Even so I struggled with finding a way to break through after 29 ... Kf8 30. Rd8 Be8. Like notsodeepthought I didn't see the elegant 30. Rxc6 which forces #, but I felt confident enough to cheat and look at the answer.

Mar-22-06		jahhaj: Very easy, I saw 28.Nf5+ almost instantly. Mind you I did have the advantage that I didn't realise Black's king could go to f8. In real chess I worry about possibilities my opponent doesn't really have. In puzzle chess I ignore possibilities that really do exist.

Mar-22-06		Richard Taylor: I saw this very quickly and also the need for possibly a sac on c6 - interesting battle.

Mar-22-06		Richard Taylor: Glligoric's strategy here was impressive - it is very diifult to get through those pawns of Blacks - so he managed to induce some weakneses and get a slight edge and then a break through and so on
