Jun-19-13  Abdel Irada: <LJLMETAL: What happens after

19. N(1)d2

After that white is threatening to take the Bishop>

My analysis (line (a)) did answer this question if nothing else. ;-)

< 19. N1d2, Qe1†
20. Nf1, Qf2# >

Jun-19-13  Bartimaeus: <Dr. Funkenstein> After 18...Bd1 19. Be3, a strong candidate seems to be Nxe3 followed by Bf3.

19. Be3 Nxe3 20. Qd2 (as black is threatening Qf6 and Qg5) Bf3! and now white will soon lose the g-pawn and the rook exposing the king to a terrible attack.

If white ventures to take the Bishop, we have :

19. Be3 Nxe3 20. Qd2 Bf3 21. gxf3 Qg5+ 22. Kf2 Qg2+ 23. Ke1 Qxh1+ 24. Kf2 Qg2+ 25. Ke1 Qf1#

There are other variations if white chooses N1d2 instead of Qd2 but white will lose in those too. To me, it seems White will simply prolong the inevitable with Be3.

Jun-19-13  whiteshark: <18...Bd1!>, and that's it.
Jun-19-13  zb2cr: Looks like 18. ... Bd1 operates a shutoff vs. White. If he doesn't take, then 19. ... Qe1 would lead to mate; if he plays 19. Qxd1, Qe1+; 20. Qxe1+, Rxe1#. Neither 19. Bd2 or 19 Bg3 work. White must therefore play 19. Be3, Nxe3 and Black has an excellent attack.
Jun-19-13  fokers13: Got it easily.

Quite beautiful though.

Jun-19-13  mistreaver: Wednsday. Black to play. 18.? Medium/Easy!
I think that Bd1 is the killer
18... Bd1!
A) 19 Qxd1 Qe1
20 Qxe1 Rxe1 mate
B) 19 h3 Qe1 mate
C) 19 Sbd2 Qe1+
20 Sf1 Qf2 mate
Time to check.
Jun-19-13  JimNorCal: This position has a general similarity to the end of the famous game Reti-Bogo, NY 1924. Reti vs Bogoljubov, 1924
Jun-19-13  Dr. Funkenstein: Bartimaeus, yes, as you and agb2002 have pointed out, after 19. Be3 which is white's best move, there follows 19. ...Nxe3 and 20 . ...Bf3 which wins at least the exchange and is therefore winning for black with the positional trumps as well.

I did not fully appreciate the strength of this move, but I do think my less precise 20. ...Qg5 and then 21. ...Bf3 still wins the exchange

Jun-19-13  kevin86: The bishop entrance deep into white's positions sets up a quick mate-that leaves white very embarrassed.

Jun-19-13  TheSlid: Very neat and even saw it fairly quickly. Bd1 - worth a chuckle at least
Jun-19-13  vonstolzing: Hello!
Is correct against g3 the following sequence?
19.g3 Qe1+ 20.Kg2 Ae3+ 21.Kh3 Cf2+ 22.Kh4 De7+ 23.Ag5 hg+ 24.Dg5 De4+ and Dh7+?
Jun-19-13  the.raven: for me this was another "Know your Réti" puzzle :) it is great to look at his games, you can find really everything in those.

Got it. Thank you! =)
Jun-19-13  Patriot: It didn't take me long to consider 18...Bd1, which seems better than 18...Bxc4.

18...Bd1

19.Qxd1 Qe1+ and mate next.

19.Be3 (seems best) - here I truly began to wonder how to make progress since black is down a piece for a pawn.

19.g3 Qe1+ 20.Kg2 Re2+ 21.Kh3 Qxh1

After 18...Bxc4:

19.Nc3 Bxb3 20.d6 is interesting.

I would go with 18...Bd1, although I'm not seeing the win on 19.Be3. Certainly, black has no major concerns here.

Jun-19-13  Sydro: Can't say I saw what to do after 19.Be3
Jun-19-13  ajile: I thought at first 18..Qh4 was the move since both 19.h3 and 19.g3 lose immediately. Then I saw that 20.Bg3 saves White. Also Black must consider N1d2 which connects the queen and rook and protects against ..Qd1+. This finally led me to the weird looking 18..Bd1 as the winner since now 19.N1d2 doesn't save White from the back rank threats.

Yes, this line does lead to checkmate. White has some shorter alternatives, though, notably <19.g3 Qe1+ 20.Kg2 Qe2+ 21.Kh3 Cf2+ 22.Kg2 Qf3+ 23.Kf1 Ch3#>, or 23.Kg1 Ch3#.

Within your line there is one especially interesting quicker mate after <19.g3 Qe1+ 20.Kg2 Af3+ 21.Kh3>

And now <21...Te5!!> is mate in four. Yes, my engine found that one, but I like it anyway.

White is losing major material to avoid mating threats.

LoveThatJoker: PS. In my 19. g3 Qe1+ 20. Kg2 line, I am of course referring to 20...Qe2+ with upcoming mate. (The Q has to stay on the light square diagonal...this and d2 being a not to attractive square for White's lady monarch). :)
