Dec-12-04  Elrathia Kingi: Timoshenko manages only to draw half-a-point of beer.

tamar: <Elrathia Kingi> If I hear you correctly, you are saying only half a point of Beer was drawn for Timoschenko, but remember it was the second round for him and it was Dutch Beer :-)

49 Rg7 Re8 50 a6 is interesting instead of the exchange sack.

lostemperor: This Beer thing is getting hillarious. I expect now someone might say Timoshenko drank too much Dutch (A80) Beer!

tamar: This is starting to frost me. Robert Beer was Swiss for godsakes. Why was he serving up half a point of a Dutch (A81) home brew? I think Georgy got mugged.
Dec-12-04  acirce: Maybe it was an ale-atory choice.

<49 Rg7 Re8 50 a6 is interesting> But then Black can defend with 50...Nb5, threatening to fork a pawn back with 51...Nc7.

Another try is 49. Rg7 Re8 50. Kf2, hoping to defend the b-pawn indirectly via 50...Nxb3 51. R7xe7+!, but Black then has the counterblow 51...Rxe7 52. Rxe7+ Kxe7 53. a6 c4 54. a7 c3 55. a8=Q c2, and I don't see how to prevent Black from queening too.

The position looks drawish at this stage.

tamar: <beatgiant> I can't make it work either. The rooks don't do well against this kind of connected pawn chain.

  beatgiant: A trap would be 49. Rg7 Re8 50. Kf1, so that now the indirect defense of the b-pawn works after 50...Nxb3 51. R7xe7+! Rxe7 52. Rxe7+ Kxe7 53. a6 c4 54. a7 c3 55. a8=Q c2 56. Qa7+. The point is that White now has Qf2+ if Black's king goes to the f-file, so the queen can pick off the c-pawn after a few more checks. But 50...Nb5 looks good enough for Black.

Maybe White could have won with 36. hxg4 or simply 36. Nxd8 instead of the game's 36. Qe4.

Feb-04-06  Knight13: What's the point of playing the King and Pawn ending when Black got the opposition?? It can't be that Robert Beer didn't know the oppostion, right?
Jul-03-06  sixfeetunder: Beer has never known about opposition among the men.
Jul-03-06  technical draw: This proves my point again..You just can't beat beer!
Jun-10-09  sfm: Why those gentlemen plays on from move 59 is a complete mystery. Maybe some kid was standing by and they wanted to demonstrate that white can only draw.
