  LIFE Master AJ: <everyone>
Pal Benko CONFIRMS - in the April issue of 'Chess Life' that Black's losing move was on his 62nd turn.

I have changed my web page accordingly.
(BTW, I have yet to go through them with the computer. But the notes here are dog-gone good.)

Jun-05-05  soberknight: On page 59 of this thread, offramp presented an odd quotation from Peter Leko. Edward Winter, author of Chess Notes, has uncovered the truth and posted it at http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/.... I present his hilarious conclusion in full.

3752. Falsification

We have it on the authority of Raymond Keene that after the fourth game of the 2004 Kramnik v Leko match in Brissago Peter Leko declared: ‘My cousin Sammy told me a true slugger – a Szeged slugger – will always swing for the fences, and that is exactly what I am going to do. I am going to knock Kramnik out of the room with my “home run punch”. My trainer and I have been developing it in camp. I just hope Vladimir’s head is screwed on tight or it may end up on top of the demonstration board!’

After quoting these words, on page 114 of his book World Chess Championship Kramnik vs. Leko, Mr Keene reported:

‘Kramnik made a face – and a fist – but chose to reserve a fuller reply for the chessboard.’

But did Leko, a gentleman, speak any of those words attributed to him by Mr Keene? Drawing this matter to our attention, Alan O’Brien (Mitcham, England) writes:

‘It struck me that this mix of boxing and baseball terminology sounded unusual coming from a Hungarian, so I decided to trace the source of the quote. The first time I have found it mentioned is at Leko vs Kramnik, 2004. In a posting dated 3 October 2004 somebody using the pseudonym “Offramp” asserted that the words quoted above (completed with “I will knock Kramnik senseless. He is going down in game five. And he is going down HARD!”) had been spoken by Leko during a press conference after game 4. Incidentally, Raymond Keene mentions the www.chessgames.com site many times in his book on the match, but not in this case.

I was curious as to where “Offramp” had obtained the quote, and at the webpage http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news/... I found the following text:

“Sosa: ‘I'm Going to Knock Manfredy Out of the Park!’ …

Dominican national lightweight champion Victoriano Sosa predicted a ‘home run-style’ knockout against former WBU champion Angel Manfredy when they rumble, Saturday, 9 November, on the pay-per-view extravaganza ‘Real Fights!’ …

Sosa, the cousin of Chicago Cub home run king Sammy Sosa, spoke today from his training camp outside Chicago …

‘My cousin Sammy told me a true slugger – a Sosa slugger – will always swing for the fences’, said Sosa. ‘And that is exactly what I am going to do. I am going to knock Angel out of the ring with my “home run punch”. My trainer and I have been developing it in camp. I just hope Manfredy’s head is screwed on tight or it may end up in the bleachers!’ …

‘I will knock Manfredy senseless. He is going down in five. And he is going down HARD!’”’

Yet another memorable episode …

Jun-06-05  Dionyseus: Interestingly enough, the Sosa-Manfredy fight which was supposed to be on November 9 of 2002 never happened, instead Sosa fought Lamar Murphy to a draw.
Oct-24-05  Dionyseus: After Leko's 1.d4, it took Kramnik one minute to play Nf6. In the post-conference Kramnik said "I deserved to be punished for playing passive." "I thought the game was rather drawish, so I was just making moves, and I lost my concentration for a while, and after time control I suddenly realized I was in serious trouble." "I know how to make draws from this position, but I just need to concentrate a bit more, and work a bit harder."

Nov-10-05  FrancisGrasso: Could we get some MORE air-conditioning in an already freezing library?? I should go out and get my jacket, but I believe the bobbies are still outside.
Nov-10-05  FrancisGrasso: Hold the phone! Was 19...Re6 possible, preventing the loss of a pawn to 20 Rd6 ?
Nov-10-05  aw1988: What about Re6 Qc1?
Nov-10-05  trolls: 19...Re6 20 Qc1 Ra8 or 20...Rxc6.

I gotta admit, this time FG looks
to be on the mark. Either way Black
isn't losing a pawn here, and he's
still got the B's. But Kramnik has
great caaaaaaaaaaaaaaalves!

Nov-10-05  aw1988: On Re6 Ra8? Rxb6! and White has a free piece.

Rxc6 looks fine, though after Qxc6 White seems to be in a better position than the game, if only slight.

Mar-10-06  alexandrovm: nice way to handle black's position, white played well, specially the ending...
Jan-22-07  radioterapista: Ehi guys...what do you think about this move: 19..., Re6 20 Qc1, Ra1. The Black doesn't lose the pawn. I'm waiting your answer.
Jan-23-07  Cyphelium: <radioterapista> 19.- ♖e6 20. ♖xe6 fxe6 21. ♕c1 looks rather dangerous for black, for example 21.- ♖a8 22. ♕c6 ♗f7 23. ♖b1 ♗a5 24. ♖b7 etc.
Jun-26-07  get Reti: Can white play 12. Bxh7+ Kxh7 13. Ng5+ Kg6 (Not 13... Kg8 Qh5) followed by an attack on the king?
Jun-26-07  Shadout Mapes: what about 12.Bxh7+ Kxh7 13.Ng5+ Kg8 (not 13...Kg6 14.h4) 14.Qh5 Bf5 - how could white continue?
Apr-02-08  zink09: well well, a line coming directly from Fischer. http://www.chessbase.de/nachrichten... check also the knight sac line form topalov-kramnik in wijk, awsome
Apr-02-08  Karpova: <zink09>
yes, that was a nice April Fool's joke.
Aug-01-08  Marmot PFL: Wow that was tedious. The first 25 moves or so is just an old Karpov-Anand game and then that long ending...Even if you can draw it who would want to have to?
Aug-01-08  kevin86: Kramnik was marred by white's sharp attack. Evidently,he missed the memo that said HE could be aggressive too.

Regarding your kibbutz on this page-

<<Oct-03-04 offramp: What Leko said in the Press Conference after game 4 was this: "My cousin Sammy told me a true slugger - a Szeged slugger - will always swing for the fences, and that is exactly what I am going to do. I am going to knock Kramnik out of the room with my 'home run punch.' My trainer and I have been developing it in camp. I just hope Vladimir's head is screwed on tight or it may end up on top of the demonstration board!"

"I will knock Kramnik senseless. He is going down in game five. And he is going down HARD!"

Wise words, mate!>

Chess historian Edward Winter goes to some lengths to question the veracity of this quote:

http://www.chesshistory.com/winter/...

Winter:

"I was curious as to where “Offramp” had obtained the quote, and at the webpage http://www.eastsideboxing.com/news/... I found the following text:
