The first idea that comes to mind is to make the most of the heavy pieces on the c-file to try to win material with 24.Bxb7: A) 24... Nxc2 25.Bxc8
A.1) 25... Rxc8 26.R3xc2 Bxf2+ 27.Kxf2 Rxc2 28.Rxc2 h6 29.Ke2 Qd5 30.Rc3 and White has the better ending after coordinating the pieces to attack Black's a- and b-pawns. A.2) 25... Qxc8 26.R3xc2 Bxf2+ 27.Kxf2 and Black can't prevent the invasion of the white rooks. A.3) 25... Bxf2+ 26.Kxf2 transposes to A.1 or A.2.
B) 24... Qxb7 25.Nxd4 is disasterous for Black (25... Bxd4 26.Rxc8). C) 24... Nxf3+ 25.Bxf3 Qxd2 26.Qxd2 Rxd2 27.Rxc5 wins a piece. D) 24... Ne2+ 25.Kf1
D.1) 25... Nxc1 26.Bxc8 wins material.
D.2) 25... Nxc3 26.Bxc8 also wins material.

resources. White must be precise.
While White has one tactic to work with, namely the Black DSB is en prise by the pawn,
Black has two juicy threats: <24...Nxc2> winning the Queen or <24...Ne2+> winning a
clean exchange.
Since I found both <24.Bxh7+> & <24.Nxd4> wonting, I resorted to a strategy most often
found in coffee houses, or in my case, when I'm under pressure due to mediocre play: Capture, keep capturing, and when the smoke clears, see whats left Canibal puts Black in a pot of boiling water after <24.Bxb7> which is tactically important as now the White Knight is preserved <24...Nxc2> Satisfying his own appetite, Black devours the White Queen; Fuzzily, I calculated that White would come out ahead in pieces after 24...Ne2+ <25.Bxc8 Qxc8> 25..Rxc8 would make little difference due to the pin on the Bishop <26.R3xc2> and we are here:

24.Rxc5 Rxc5 25.bxc5 Nxf3+ seems to be in black's favor. 24.bxc5 Ne2+ 25.Kh1 Nxc3 26.Bxc3 or perhaps 24...Nxf3+ 25.Rxf3 Bxe4 26.Qxe4 Qxd2 is even better for black. 24.Bxb7 Ne2+ 25.Kh1 Nxc3 26.Bxc8 Qxd2 27.Qxd2 Rxd2 28.bxc5 looks pretty wild. But I think 26.Bxc3 is good in that line. 25...Nxc1 looks better for black since 26.Bxc1 Qd1+ and mate next or 26.Bxc8 Qxd2 27.Qxd2 Rxd2 28.Rxc1 Bd4 and white is winning. Ok, so 25...Nxc1 isn't great. And 24.Bxb7 Nxf3+ 25.Bxf3 Qxd2 26.Qxd2 Rxd2 27.bxc5 wins. So out of all the craziness, now 24.Bxb7 looks best. |

Bxh7+ Kf8 ( 24. -Kh8 25. Qd3 and 26. Ng5 is a quite strong threat. If 25. -Ne2+?, then simply 26. Qxe2 and if 26. -Bxf3 27. gxf3 and White is winning ) 25. Qd3 and now if -Bc5 retreats or Black plays 25. -Nxf3+, then 26. gxf3 and White has just won a pawn with several lines to play for both. Maybe there is some brilliancy, though. |

Here's the position if he had played 34...Qa2.
click for larger viewIn the first diagram (text position) white can proceeed with his plan of Be7-Rc8, seeing Rg8+, because his king has a nice escape square from harrassing queen checks on g3. The whole idea is for black to keep a presence on his kingside, so he can keep white's king away from a safe square like g3. He accomplishes this with 34...Qa2, so if white plays 35 gxh5+ black has 35...Kxh5.

It's the sort of thing you get interested in when you reach your half century and it takes you all night to do what you used to do all night. There is one phrase which chefs sometimes use that always gives us the giggles. There are dozens of stock cliches - "a modern interpretation of a classic dish" or "it's a XXXX deconstructed", or "it's strawberries cooked three ways" or "textures of spinach." But the corker - the 100 point cheffy bingo winner - is "I always try to put a little bit of me in every plate I cook." What a revolting thought. Unless you are Dr Canibal, eating liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti. Baby snake: are we poisonous?

All of which is a roundabout way of admitting that this particular kibitzer spent far too long analysing 24. Bxh7+ and cannot claim even a crumb of a point for today's POTD. |

Fritz seems to like g5, but it looks to me like the kingside pawn advances made white's job easier. |
