| aginis: Okay for everyone unfamiliar with current theory in the vienna game, 2...Bc5 is a mistake and 3.Na4! is the correct response. The key move is 7.Qe1  unfortunately neither white nor black were familiar with the variation (which was probably discovered after their time.) |

All the pieces still on the board, only one pawn and one piece developed for each side, and you're talking about the ultimate truth of the position? You might as well make the same claim about the position before white's first move. After 3...d6 or 3...Be7 or 3...Bb6 or another non-sacrificial line, three results are possible and nobody has any idea what perfect play might yield. |

| patzer2: Playing this opening line of the Vienna as White is like walking through a land mine field. If you can avoid all the traps and trip wires, you just might survive with a win or a draw. However, one misstep can be disastrous. In this case, I think White may have tripped up and missed a win by not playing 9. d4! An analysis with Fritz 8 gives the following winning possibility for White: 9. d4! Nc6 10. Nf3 Nf6 11. Bd3 Nxd4+ 12. Ka3 Qg4 13. Nxe5 Qxg2 14. c3 Nc6 15. Nxc6 bxc6 16. Nc5 O-O 17. Qf1 Bh3 18. Qxg2 Bxg2 19. Rg1 Bf3 20. Bg5 Ne4 21. Bh6 g6 22. Bxf8 Kxf8 23. Nd7+ Ke7 24. Ne5 Nc5 25. Bxg6 hxg6 26. Nxf3  . |

| patzer2: Black's 8...Be6!? was only played in this game. Perhaps that is because of the strength of White's potential 9. d4! reply. Most often played here has been 8...Na6!? However, White has done well against it and may even have found a refutation after 9. a3! in M Wind vs T Winckelmann, 1993. Black's other recorded try was 8...Nc6!?, which worked OK for the second player in T Erben vs M Reichel, 1989. So perhaps the rare try 8...Nc6!? is Black's best chance for a win in this line. |

All the pieces still on the board, only one pawn and one piece developed for each side, and you're talking about the ultimate truth of the position?> You're right Shams, but I am operating from the assumption that the game of chess is theoretically a draw, and that White can even afford to "waste a move" with Na4 or a3 or some other unstrategic move and still be OK, just like Black is OK. The critical line here therefore is the sacrifice: if it can be shown to win, then we know that 3.Na4 loses. But so far, everything seems to point to a draw. |
