Mar-20-06  Capa15: Too easy. Decoy King to get Rook on 7th (2nd rank) and it's all over.
Mar-20-06  chesstoplay: This was the fastest I have ever solved a puzzle on chessgames.com. Great basics here for any starting player from an isolated king that has no legal move just waiting for the attack to a basic rook and queen roll to finish the mate. Good fun and good practice.
Mar-20-06  chesstoplay: Not too easy, just perfect Monday material to keep you going deeper into the week. Maybe we end the week with classic two bishop sacs!!!
Mar-20-06  yataturk: Anyone has ideas about how many ELOs each day is worth? I'd say mondays are worth 1200...
Mar-20-06  dzechiel: Pretty straight forward. Saw it in a few seconds. All chess combinations should be this easy.
Mar-20-06  oao2102: That h2 pawn is just begging for it!
Mar-20-06  Aware: Visualized it to mate in all variations...perfect monday puzzle!
Mar-20-06  dzechiel: <yataturk> Good question about the ELOs. If we measure by USCF rating points, I would guess this puzzle could be worked out by some class "D" players (1200-1399), most class "C" players (1400-1599), and all class "B" and above players (1600-).
Mar-20-06  yataturk: <dzechiel> are USCF rating points more or less comparable with yahoo rating points?
Mar-20-06  Cogano: A nice elementary exercise in basic mating tactics. Enjoyable & educational too! Thanks to <chessgames.com> for the lesson. Cheers!
Mar-20-06  notyetagm: White must have been in time trouble to miss this straightforward tactical shot.

His king is <stalemated> (always a danger sign) and the forcing sequence 35 ... ♗xh2+! 36 ♔xh2 <deflects> the White king from defending the f2-square, handing the 7th rank to the Black f8-rook with tempo via 36 ... ♖f2+.

The Black queen and rook then put on a powerful coordinated display to forcibly mate the White king. It always amazes me when I see a queen and rook mate the enemy king while the defending army (d3-queen, d2-knight, e1-rook) just watches helplessly nearby.

35 ... ♗xh2+! 36 ♔xh2 ♖f2+:

37 ♔g1 ♕g2#
37 ♔g3 ♕g2+ 38 ♔h4 ♖f4#
37 ♔h3 ♕g2+ 38 ♔h4 ♖f4#

Mar-20-06  Dim Weasel: Got it. Difficulty was just right for my Monday morning.
Mar-20-06  Necessary Truths: <yataturk> Yahoo, pogo, msn, and all those other online 'rated' playing sites aren't worth anything to determine real skill level; they don't follow any kind of rational statistical models. Only Elo style rating systems are really worth anything.
Mar-20-06  ckr: Need this after yesterday's puzzle
Mar-20-06  timems: <yataturk, dzechiel> I do not know how many ELO rating points Monday puzzles are worth but I solved this puzzle and my USCF rating is barely 974 points. I can usually solve Monday and Tuesday puzzles it just takes a couple of minutes.

  OhioChessFan: Hooray for Monday!
Mar-20-06  Richerby: <notyetagm> This is a rapid game so White was in at least a little time trouble by, say, move 2. :-)
Mar-20-06  prinsallan: Easy ;0)
Mar-20-06  playschessforlaughs: Got a Monday! I hope the puzzles are easier than last week (they were brutal for me...!)
Mar-20-06  Goumindong: <Necessary Truths> Yahoo aparently use a modified ELO. As does Gameknot.

Transfering that into other ELO ratings(like FIDE) is a bit different and difficult though(they all use different k numbers)

Mar-20-06  Richerby: I'll just point out again that ratings measure performance, not skill. You can't expect there to be anything better than a correlation between ratings on one site and ratings on another.
Mar-20-06  Fezzik: While this tactic is fairly simple to work out, it seems a bit hard for a Monday puzzle. After all, a 2500+ player didn't seem to notice it in time (even though it was a rapid game).

It's always fun to think that I could beat a 2500+ player, given the right circumstances!

Mar-20-06  Jim Bartle: "I'll just point out again that ratings measure performance, not skill."

That's unfortunate. I may think my skill level is 2500, but my performance rating is 1250.

Mar-20-06  Goumindong: <Jim Bartle> Richerby is pointing out not that performance doesnt equal skill, but that performance on one site doesnt equal performance on another, because the people change. And since the people change, the skills change, and if the skills change, then your rating changes.

I rate 1350 at gameknot. What i rate FIDE or USCF, i dont know. Because i have never played a FIDE or USCF rated game. And will never know until i play a number of their rated games or find a detailed conversion table brought up based on analyses of the ratings of people who have ratins on all three systems.

These analyses dont really exist in depth.

Mar-20-06  dakgootje: <It's always fun to think that I could beat a 2500+ player, given the right circumstances!> Yes indeed, if only i can skip about the whole game, untill we are about in the endgame, then the opponent makes a huge blunder and some kind of blunder-light springs on telling me there is a forced mate... Its sooo easy to beat a 2500+ player ;-)
