Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-30-07  magilla: I think 63. Qd7# would have ended the game a few moves more quickly, not that it matters.

I don't understand why resignations are not offered directly upon a game reducing to K+Q v. K, although the Endgame Explorer shows a number of games where such endings are played out to checkmate or just shy of checkmate. I wonder if such situations are motivated by time trouble situations, playing for possible stalemate (see, improbably, R Blau vs A Ammann, 1993) or is it something else?

Feb-02-07  magilla: Or 63. Qb8#.
Feb-02-07  hellstrafer: This is weird. Ziska's rating is somewhere around 2300s and he misses a mate in one which is impossible to overlook?
Mar-04-07  magilla: I have seen this - not the moves but the principle perhaps - when watching a cat playing in a protracted way with a doomed mouse.
Jan-22-09  whatthefat: I'm assuming at least White - if not both players - were in time trouble. It's the only reasonable explanation for Black playing on in such a ridiculously hopeless position and White missing a quicker mate.
Sep-12-16  sfm: White is simply playing around, probably as a contra-teaser to a man who could have resigned long time ago. A cat-and-mouse game. The mates on d7 and b9 is not missable by such a player, they are too hardcoded into the brain.

ChessCoachClark: A master missed two mate-in-one lines here! Stockfish 16 shows TWO lines after 62. ... Kd8 as M1!! Ziska could have played 63. Qb8# for a Lonely Queen's Box Mate at the edge with Rectangular Opposition immediately.

Otherwise, Ziska could have played 63. Qd7# for a Lonely In-His-Face Mate at the edge with Rectangular Opposition immediately.

Great learning opportunities for students. Keep checking for elementary mate patterns you should have memorized.

Be well.
Be safe.

fredthebear: A whole lot of teasing from the White queen, as Black should have resigned.

P.S. In general terms, this is known as a SUPPORT MATE: The piece giving check (queen) is protected by another unit.

perfidious: While much time has been wasted over the missed simple mate across the years, the self-styled supreme arbiter of mating nomenclature has weighed in this day with his .00000000002 and settled the question.

In his mind, anyway.

More of the infamous unjust Chessgames double standard on full display. Your two-faced buddies delete my posts and vandalize my collections but allow your worthless harassments to litter decades of pages. Obviously, you had nothing of honest value to add to this subject, and most subjects for that matter, so try shutting up whenever you find yourself entertaining a cheap useless comment on your way to sloppy six figure posts. Quality reigns supreme over quantity.

Oh, and had you bothered to actually read my entire post, you'd realize that I provided ample evidence of "mating nomenclature" as used by a host of others. Checkmate is the object of the game, fool! Some members find my posts informative, and others are mildly entertained. Your lazy cyberstalking statements are just a waste of our time, killing off the link conversation.
