Mar-01-09  A.G. Argent: <al wazir> <36.Rd5 wins faster.> Oooh Al W, ain't so sure about that. If 36.Rd5 then 36...Bb5 pretty much gums up White's attack. 37.Rxc5 don't really help much because after exchanges, White's position is greatly weakened. Nope, Krejcik did just fine. 36.Rd7+ is excellent.

  al wazir: <A.G. Argent>: 36. Rd5 Bb5 37. Rxc5. Now what?

If 37...Bxc4, then 38. Rxa5. If 37...Rxf8, then 36. Rxb5. If 37...Rxc5, then 38. Qf7+ Kh6 39. Qxh7+ Kg5 40. Rxc5. If 37...Qxa2, then 38. Qxb5 Rxg8 (38...Rxc5 39. Qxc5 Kxg8). White is a ♖ up and nothing black can do will change that.

al wazir: al wazir: <patzer2, OhioChessFan>: If <CG>'s pun is profane, then so is D. Hell's name. Do you really want to maintain that? There are hundreds of languages in the world, making it statistically certain that what is scatological, obscene, or profane in one will turn out to be acceptable in another.

For example, in <CG>'s database I find two players named Hui and one named Puto. "Khuy" (pronounced almost identically to "Hui") is an obscenity in Russian, and "puto" is one in Spanish. (There are also five named "Kock" and three named "Bich." Think what <CG> could do with those!)

As <duffer> says, <Oh, lighten up, OhioChessFan!> (<Jesspatrick> points out that <in German "hell" means "bright.">) You and <patzer2> are tilting at windmills.

Mar-01-09  patzer2: <alwazir> There is a difference between the name "D. Hell" and the pun "What D. h_ _?" and what it implies. I can tell the difference, and I know you can also.

The obvious meaning of the pun is an inference to a common vulgar phrase that CG.com did not dare include in the pun.

Some might think those of us who are bothered by this should acquiesce to it as part of the decline of civility and decorum in our culture, especially regarding the general acceptance of coarse language in public discourse.

However, I'm disappointed in the trend and concerned that those responsible for monitoring profanity and civility on this site could be setting a bad example.

Mar-01-09  blacksburg: wait a minute, since when is "Hell" a dirty word? seriously, preachers say Hell in church, right? is "Heaven" also a profane word? how about "cookie"?
Mar-02-09  patzer2: <since when is "Hell" a dirty word?> How about when a police officer pulls you over for a traffic violation and asks for your license and registration and instead of complying you suggest that is a place to which he or she should go.

I see what you're driving at. But one man's meat is another man's poisson. What seems profane to you may not -- and in this case does not -- seem so to most others.

When Oliver Cromwell ruled the Commonwealth of England as Lord Protector, the works of Shakespeare were bowdlerized, as we would say (though Thomas Bowdler lived a century later). Every occurrence of the words "God," "Christ," and "Heaven" or "Heavens" was replaced by a euphemism, because the Puritans deemed the explicit use of these words in a secular setting to be impious. ("Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain.") Jews traditionally were equally chary about uttering the name of God, reserving it for prayers and using paraphrases in other contexts. I'd be surprised to learn that you still adhere to this rigorous interpretation of the Third Commandment. (If you're Catholic, it's the Second Commandment.)

As for that police officer, I don't think he would respond any more positively if I told him to go to Hades. It's not the word but the sentiment that matters.

how about you tell a cop to go play in traffic. does that make traffic a dirty word?

OhioChessFan: It makes for an interesting discussion when a kid asks you what makes a dirty word a dirty word. In any case, it's usage and context and some other undefinable something. Used in the sense of this pun, I think everyone instinctively knows this was a profanity, although most would say it was a "mild" profanity. I agree with Patzer2 that it was a surprising lapse in judgment by Chessgames. I think that it's just one more little tear in the societal net of good manners. I will also note that this treads on the line of making fun of a player's name, which is unacceptable, as opposed to having fun with their name.
Mar-02-09  patzer2: <OhioChessFan> Well said!

<Blacksburg> You ask if <you tell a cop to go play in traffic, does that make traffic a dirty word?> As <OhioChessFan> indicates it's usage and context for the most part that defines whether a word is profane. For your example, I refer to the definitions at http://wordnetweb.princeton.edu/per... which defines profanity as "vulgar or irreverent speech or action," and http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/profa... which defines profanity as "obscene, lewd or abusive" language.

So if telling a police officer "go play in traffic" could be considered "abusive language" or "irreverent" (which can include disrespectful as one of it's defintions according to http://www.thefreedictionary.com/ir...), then yes this might fall into or at least border closely on being considered profane language.

As a legal matter, I find it interesting that in the U.S. Supreme Court case Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire, discussed at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapli..., the court held that the arrest of a person for <lewd and obscene, the profane, the libelous, and the insulting or "fighting" words those which by their very utterance inflict injury or tend to incite an immediate breach of the peace> does not create a consitutional problem.

What is interesting here is that all of these categories of speech (lewd and obscene, the profane, libelous and "insulting or fighting words") are not protected free speech under the first amendment to the U.S. constitution. So whether or not telling a police officer <go play in traffic> is technically considered profane or insulting, you could enjoy a night in jail either way. Also, in this instance you might also be charged with the "failure to obey a lawful order" issued by the police officer.

Mar-01-13  waustad: <al wazir>In a similar vein I remember running into a Slovenian town that hosted a chess tournament spelled Ptuj and pronounced: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped... I was in Gdansk years ago right where many of the first shots in the European theater of WWII were fired and there was an Indian ship in port with a swastika on the prow. Ah yes, context.

Without commenting on the first two, "cookie" is definitely a dirty word for most internet users who don't care to have their movements tracked for the benefit of advertisers.
