Aug-11-08 | | notyetagm: A beautifully played game by Aronian. He seems back in form after his horrific winless -4 at M-Tel just three months ago. |

Aug-11-08 | | Bobsterman3000: 37... Rc7! was the culmination of a deadly long-range plan by Aronian. Aronian saw much deeper into this position, and remained 1-2 steps ahead of Chepa throughout the game. Ultimately, Chepa's potentially ominous looking threats on the g and c files were defused easily (and stylishly) by Aronian. |

<Very well played game by Levon Aronian. Especially I liked his 18...Nbd5! and 25...h4! moves, which helped him to continue existing pressure in the position. This is a great art, without which it's very hard to account a win in contemporary chess, especially when you play black. GM Sakaev> |

So far this beautiful win by Aronian is the frontrunner for the coveted Notyetagm Best Played Game Of 2008 Award. This is the best played game I have seen since Svidler's Black win over Mamedyarov at the ETCC last fall. |

And I am hungry to read analyzes of this game too. |

 | | chancho: 40...b5! denying the white Bishop the a4 square and making it easier for Aronian to promote his passer. |

 | | Jimfromprovidence: Notwithstanding black’s excellent play,
the chessok web site http://chessok.com/broadcast/live.p...suggests that white blew it with 30 Bxd4, allowing the creation of the passed d pawn. They see 30 b4! as a game saver for white, with 30…cxb4 31 Bxd4 Qxd4 32 hxg6 as the best continuation. click for larger viewWith this alternative line, it does not appear that there is a win in sight for black. |

Aug-11-08 | | arnaud1959: According to a post I read about 2 days ago I thought Aronian was only able to win through "cheap tactics"!!! |

Aug-11-08 | | whiteshark: <notyetagm> The dividing line between you and a GM will always be at 2,500 ELO points. :D j/k |
|
Aug-11-08 | | zluria: <arnaud1959> I wrote that post, and it was based on an interview in which Aronian described himself as a "cheap Tactician". Of course he is nothing of the sort; he plays some of the deepest and most beautiful games around. It's a funny quote though, and it's an example of his famous modesty, so I alluded to it. |

Aug-11-08 | | whiteshark: <26.gxh4> looks like a weak move. Awaiting further developments in not Chepa's way of playing. But <26.Rc2> or <26.Be2> are my current favourites. |

Aug-12-08 | | arsen387: This is really a cool victory by Aronian with black against the leader of the tournament. I hope this will give him a lot confidence to win it. And GM Sakaev's words are very suitable for this game <This is a great art, without which it's very hard to account a win in contemporary chess, especially when you play black>. thanks <khursh> for the quote. |
|
Aug-12-08 | | PinkPanther: Aronian played pretty well, but this was a pathetic effort from Cheparinov. You don't get the advantage so easily like this with black unless something went wrong for white. Not against a near Super GM, anyway. |
|
Aug-12-08 | | cotdt: Aronian is back! |
|
Aug-12-08 | | amateur05: There is an interview with Aronian in which he expresses the view that Chepa lost because his (Chepa's) play was uncharacteristically cautious. The journalist later asked Chepa about this and he replied that Danailov advised him not to take any unnecessary risk. |
