An Englishman: Good Evening: The oldest Pirc Defense, Austrian Attack (our Opening of the Day) in the database reveals some astonishingly modern play by Mohisunder with the Black pieces. Notice how he splits his Queen side pawns to ensure that White can't place a Knight on d5. He also obtains a dark-square grip on d4, f4 and g3. I also like how he saw further than White and allowed a seemingly winning combination with 20...Nh5. Aside from the obsolete 6...Nbd7, (7.e5!), he played very well, and his final move of the game is a quiet but nasty little shot.

Black to play 21...? "Wild adventure, mortal danger, Be thy portion, valiant stranger"

May-06-25  Prabhat Mukherjea: The tactical sequence that begins with 21. Rxa7 is quite insane by even modern standards.

Determining whether or not the capture works requires a lot of calculation. The defence 20...Nh5 by Banerjee was a truly impressive conception.

offramp: <User: Prabhat Mukherjea> Are you saying that both players were insane? Which player are you saying was <insane>?

John Cochrane was a barrister, and he was certainly <compos mentis>.

May-06-25  sudoplatov: Stockfish suggestion of 28.Ne1 isn't obvious.

Stockfish doesn't have a dictionary. Google suggests "outré".

DaltriDiluvi: It took me a while to realise that in the final position, Black is threatening mate with <38...Qg1+ 39.Kh4 Qf2+ 40.Kg4 Qg2+ 41.Kh4 g5+ 42.Kh5 Qxh3#>. There's also the obvious threat of <38...Qxd2>; White resigned because he has no way to stop both of these threats.

  takebackok: Queen endings one slip and its curtains. After 36...Qa4 Think white could try 37. Qa5, Qc4, Qc5, Qe7, Qd6, Qb8, Qb6, Ba5, Bc5, Bc3 Be1 or c3 not 37. Bf8 Qf4+ (and Qxf8) or as played 37. Bd2? etc.
May-07-25  sudoplatov: There are a bunch of modern-looking games in this series. Gruenfeld, this game, probably Nimzoindian defence too.
