Jul-16-09  nolanryan: wow that patzer had no hope
Jul-16-09  VaselineTopLove: No obvious mistakes...I think Bd6 was needed on move 43. 43...Bd6 44.Kxe6 bxc4 45.Kf7 Kd5 with the plan of bringing the Bishop on e5 and shielding the c pawn so it can queen. If white plays Bg5 black can still shield the pawn by playing Ba3 and keep pushing the other c-pawn behind it...

  bright1: <VaselineTopLove:> in your line, after 43. ... Bd6+ 44. Kxe6 bxc4, why would White play 45. Ke6-f7 when he can play 45. g4-g5 ?
Jul-17-09  totololo: Instructive game - Shirov has foreseen the ending...

HeMateMe: Isnt that what Capa would do, fix his opponents pawns on one color, then trade for his bishop of the other color. the defender is stuck with pawn chains on the same color as his bishop. And he runs out of moves.

I like this exchange variation, it just seems like the kind of variation an average player could do well with. GMs apparnently can defend this one pretty well, but at the club level, white might win a lot of games.

Jul-17-09  ajile: This game graphically shows the difference between a master and a grandmaster.
Jul-17-09  Octal: I'd like to see this ending annotated. If someone sees it annotated somewhere can you post where?
Jul-18-09  VaselineTopLove: <bright1> You are right I missed 45.g5
Jul-19-09  Micah Hughey: Shirov said that Panjwani missed an "easy draw" in the bishop ending.
Jul-19-09  Octal: You can see the game annotated (very lightly) here: http://www.chessbase.com/news/2009/...
Jul-19-09  kurtrichards: Raja was lucky enough to reach 53 moves before resigning. Shirov even said that Raja missed an easy draw.

Ron: Move 35 might be a question mark move, Shabalov gives:

35.Kd3 Again Alexey changes his mind in the middle of variation.Ask him if [35.Bf8 Ke8 36.Bxh6 Kf7 37.Kd3 c5 38.Kc2 a6 39.Kd3 Kg8 40.a4 a5 41.Ke4 Kf7 42.Bxg5 Bxg5 43.f4 was winning. It certainly looks that way.]

Jul-19-09  Ed Trice: To <kurtrichards>

You might find some of this interesting.

Aug-30-09  Knight13: <nolanryan: wow that patzer had no hope> Wow you would definitely have played better... Show me!
Aug-30-09  Keith Dow: From Octal's web reference:

It is not that easy to realize that black should not play this position for a win. [39...Ke7 40.Bb8 Kd8 held an easy draw. Now white suddenly gets good winning chances.]
