Dec-11-10  VaselineTopLove: Happy Birthday Vishy!
Dec-11-10  Reisswolf: Did Short really get checkmated? Was it because of time pressure? Otherwise, one would think that he would have resigned after 41...Rc1+. The sequence is forced.
Dec-11-10  SuperPatzer77: <Reisswolf> I believe that Nigel Short got checkmated - it wasn't because of time pressure. He made 40th move of Qf3 and then got an additional time control for one hour per 20 moves. I assume that it was mind-boggling for Nigel Short. Too bad he lost to the World Chess Champion Vishy Anand.

Dec-12-10  thickhead: <BobCrisp: <Ulhumbrus>, 38...Ne4 is clever but Fritz thinks 39.Be1 is level. > But how about 39... Ng3+ 40 Bxg3 Rxg3 attacking N on f3. Black's back rank is safe.
Dec-12-10  Rawprawn: What is wrong with 36.Qxh4? Looks good to me, so it must be awful.
Dec-12-10  BobCrisp: < thickhead: <BobCrisp: <Ulhumbrus>, 38...Ne4 is clever but Fritz thinks 39.Be1 is level. > But how about 39... Ng3+ 40 Bxg3 Rxg3 attacking N on f3. Black's back rank is safe.>

Playable but White retains some advantage and an extra pawn after 41.Qe8+ Rg8 42.Qh5.

Dec-12-10  Eyal: <What is wrong with 36.Qxh4?> 36...Nh7 37.Qxh6 Rb7, and White is far from having enough compensation for the material.

chancho: Perhaps 37.Qe2 and then Bxg5 next... but Anand can prevent it.
Dec-12-10  Rawprawn: <Eyal> I was not thinking Qxh6, but Qxf6.
Dec-12-10  Eyal: <Rawprawn> That would be crushing indeed, except for the black knight on h7...
Dec-12-10  Rawprawn: <Eyal> Doh!
Dec-13-10  Rookie Pawn: Short circuited.....
Dec-15-10  bezzazz: I'd criticize both 35. Ng5?? & 37. Bxg5?? simply because both moves lose material without compensation, obviously. Short should not dare try sacrificing material, especially against a top class player like Anand!!

Check It Out: I really like this game. It has tension, it's understandable, it's like a good old fist fight...not that these guys are old, or anything...and it ends with and old-fashion checkmate.

Nigel Seems to be thriving on the classic <elderly statesman wrench in the works> status, and frankly, I enjoy seeing him in high level tournaments, never mind his poor statistics.

For the love of chess, Short, Smyslov, Tal, Korchnoi and Karpov!

Jan-10-11  Whitehat1963: Yes, agree with <Check It Out>. Fun game.
Jan-16-11  talisman: that's mate...right? :)

Penguincw: The other checkmate from the <London Chess Classic 2010> is from Adams vs D Howell, 2010 and looks like this :

HeMateMe: Sharp game. Always nice to see a GM game played out to mate--very respectful to the player who won, to allow a mate on the board.
Mar-07-13  John Abraham: Great game, not much else to say.
Jan-07-16  SimplicityRichard: Excellent game by Short who was not playing to draw. Nevertheless Anand proved why he was a World Champion.#

sackman: Very nice defending from Anand esp. 38 Qd6 that holds everything. <Kingscrusher> thank you for the commentary!
May-06-18  sls: Short-sighted Short?
