Jan-22-11  Marmot PFL: Maybe black wants to take 2 pawns then fight with R vs Q. It would be a short fight though
Jan-22-11  Bobwhoosta: <Chesschatology>

I don't know exactly what you're talking about. His opening prep seems fine, and with the exception of Ponomariov (where his middlegame ideas balanced the position after a bad opening) his openings in general have been quite successful.

His endgame play is seriously impressive, and his time management is simply on a different level than before. Everything in his game is one to two notches higher in this tournament than it ever has been before.

Jan-22-11  cadwallon: 1-0 official
Jan-22-11  Kazzak: Congratulations to Nakamura, who takes the lead, and who proves a thing or two about "blitz players."

:-)

I'm looking forward to the statistical analysis proving that what happened didn't happen.

Penguincw: Smeets might as well resign because unless Nakamura blunders , it's pretty much hopeless for black.
Jan-22-11  Bobwhoosta: <BobWhoosta>

Except his calculation abilities. Those are pretty much the same as they ever were.

Peligroso Patzer: <technical draw: You don't even need the f pawn to win.>

Actually, in the position after 61. g5, if you remove the White f-pawn, Black on move has a tablebase draw with 61. ... Rh8 or 61. ... Re8+. See http://www.k4it.de/index.php?topic=....

Jan-22-11  Arcturus: From white's view the primary set-up you needed to avoid was a black pawn on b2 with the the black rook on c1. Other than that the fact that the black king was stuck babysitting the b pawn freed the white kingside and king. This was the beauty behind Bb3 and Bd1. Good game Naka!
Jan-22-11  turbo231: I think Smeets resigned.
Jan-22-11  marcwordsmith: wow.
7 rounds in and Naka leads the tournament. Crazy.

chessgames.com: Thanks to everybody for participating in today's live broadcasts from Wijk aan Zee. Tune in tomorrow morning at 7:30am (USA/East) for the next exciting round!
Jan-22-11  talisman: i was wrong..9 minutes...good game...enjoyed it...thanks chessgames...go Naka! who does he have tomorrow?...Magnus? good luck. hope you win.
Jan-22-11  Bobwhoosta: <chessgames.com>

Thank you SO much for broadcasting a new game to replace LIVE games that find their result. It's more work for ya'll, which means that you're thinking of us in doing it, and we're very appreciative.

Jan-22-11  Kazzak: Not that crazy. Nakamura has been on the verge of a couple of big tournament wins, and now he's curbed his impatience. He has the skill.

I don't get chesscatology's comment. Nakamura has played comfortable games against all three of those players.

Jan-22-11  Bobwhoosta: Does the lack of Naka-face on the dancing rook mean they never expected Naka to win, they didn't expect to relay the game, or just that Naka wouldn't look good as a dancing rook?

It could be a combination of the latter two.

Jan-22-11  turbo231: <marcwordsmith: wow. 7 rounds in and Naka leads the tournament. Crazy.>

Why? He's a very good player.

Open Defence: Anand might regret not pushing harder today....
Jan-22-11  talisman: gotta to love those American chess players...gata and naka. keep pumping the money into our USCF and see what can happen?

I left it there for anyone with a Conspiracy Theory involving aliens, Karpov, Illumzhinov, or any combination of the two.

Open Defence: so we should have stuck with the first feed after all....
Jan-22-11  Bobwhoosta: <Peligroso Patzer>

Thanks, now when I'm in tournaments I can get down to six men, then double check on the tablebase that I am indeed lost!!! That way, by using my cell phone during a game I'll lose by forfeit instead of having to resign!!!

Jan-22-11  notyetagm: NAKA wins!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
