Mar-25-13  Abdel Irada: For anyone who doesn't recognize the reference in the pun, it's one of my daughter's favorite stories, Orson Scott Card's sci-fi classic _Ender's Game_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ender'...).
Mar-25-13  morfishine: Thanks guys namely <CG>, <Phony Benoni>, <GrahamClayton>, <FSR> & <Adbel Irada>!

The story, documents and links make this one of the most enjoyable chess experiences I've had here at <CG> :)

Anyone who thinks this is "only" a chess site hasn't been paying attention. :-D

  FSR: <morfishine> For more amusement, don't miss <Phony Benoni>'s June 7, 2009 comment to Wiede vs A Goetz, 1880.

  perfidious: <FSR: I trust you know of the <Potter Pharm> controversy?>

Never heard of this, but the <Palmer Phar> affair is well known.

Mar-25-13  The HeavenSmile: <Abdel Irada> or the more recent futurama feature length episode - 'Bender's game'
Mar-25-13  Abdel Irada: <The HeavenSmile: <Abdel Irada> or the more recent futurama feature length episode - 'Bender's game'>

Perhaps, although that would in turn be based on _Ender's Game_.

Mar-25-13  The HeavenSmile: <Abdel Irada> almost certainly, though the futurama episode is about the crew being sucked into a alternate reality based on the dungeons and dragons universe, made real by the combination of benders robo-madness and the coming together of two anti-backwards dark matter crystals. So, the similarity probably ends with the name!
Mar-25-13  acapo: I remember that Tal made a reference to O'Bender in his book The Life And Games of Mikhail Tal regarding the move 1.e4 that Fischer played in one of there games. Bender was posing as a grandmaster and challenged everyone in the village to pay a fee to play him in a simo he played white and after 1.e4 he went on to lose every game and ran out the door with the money and escaped in a boat.
Mar-25-13  morfishine: <FSR> This is a real gem, both the game, Wiede vs A Goetz, 1880 which is amusing in itself, and <Phony Benoni>'s post, Wiede vs A Goetz, 1880 which is really entertaining!
Mar-25-13  TheTamale: <Abdel Irada>: Ironic, then, that Bender's game doesn't even make it to the endgame.

p.s. Is your daughter an adult? I found that book to be pretty R-rated.

Mar-25-13  haydn20: < waustad: This story reminds me of a chorus I was in many years ago where somebody wrote his name as Fisher D. Scow and was listed as such in the program. > As a huge fan of the late Dietrich F-D and a former community chorus singer, I laughed myself silly about this, and only wish I had had the stones to use the name. Thanks!
Mar-25-13  kevin86: Am I safe to assume that g3 would be met by Qf3?
Mar-25-13  Shams: <kevin86> 21...Qh3 mates one move faster but 21...Qf3 22.Kf1 Rxe3 might be more to your taste.

Yes, I must have misremembered the name.

Mar-25-13  jkiipli: in the final position, what will black play after 21.f3? it is pretty hopless for white but still my drunk eyes cannot see immediate mate

  keypusher: 21.g3 Re1#

21.f3 Qxg2#

Mar-25-13  Shams: <keypusher> 21...Re1# even faster. I'm a plumb idiot.
Mar-25-13  jkiipli: <keypusher> yea I'm obviously getting a bit more sober now
Mar-25-13  Novirasputin: Bender was the fictional "hero" in the Ilf and Petroff classics 12 chairs and the Golden Calf ( in this case 1 million rubles). Bender a scam artist at one point pretends to be a GM and gives a simul in which he proceeds to lose every game. He runs out with an angry mob chasing him.

  WannaBe: I thought Bender's a robot in Futurama!! =))
Mar-25-13  TheFocus: I wonder if me and this Bender are related?
Mar-25-13  TheFocus: When I say I've been on a couple of Benders, I ain't talking about drinking.

I'm talking about my ex-wives.

Mar-26-13  SuperPatzer77: < kevin86: Am I safe to assume that g3 would be met by Qf3? >

After 21. g3, Black's faster move is 21...Re1# <keypusher>'s.

<Kevin86> - <Sham> himself admitted to a mistake by overlooking 21...Re1#.

<Sham> I also admitted that I overlooked that move - Re1#.

<Sham> I'm a worse idiot than you are. LOL LOL

If 21. f3, then 21...Qxg2# - that's all, folks!!

SuperPatzer77

Mar-27-13  TheFocus: When I was born, my Father was playing a gig in a small town bar, and when asked what my name should be, he looked down at his guitar and said, "Name him Fender." Naturally she thought that was silly, so instead she named me after her Father.

The name is Bender. Otto Fender Bender.
