  FSR: 32...Rb6?? allowed White to execute <Lara's Theme>: 33.Rxe7! Kxe7 34.c7 and a pawn promotes. Instead 32...Nxc6! 33.Rd6+ K moves 34.Rxc6 Rxb7 would have been dead drawn.

Phony Benoni: Not a very inspiring GOTD or pun, though definitely in the Top Ten of 2014 so far. White does find an ingenious winning attempt, but as <FSR> points out Black missed a drawing line.
Jan-06-14  charmarks: <Phony Benoni>, I would even say it's in the Top 6 of 2014 so far. :D
Jan-06-14  Strelets: I'm always good for a "Doctor Zhivago" joke.

Same here. There is nothing quite like a really good Dr Zhivago joke.

FSR: This appears to tie my personal record for the fastest time from nomination to GOTD: four days. It's tied with Caruana vs Korchnoi, 2011 ("The Old Man and the C"); Leko vs Svidler, 1998 ("The Peter Principle"); and Pachman vs A Ludgate, 1976 ("Opening the Ludgates"). It's doubtless the worst game of the four.
Jan-06-14  morfishine: It would be nice if this pun actually had something to do with chess.

However, the song isn't too bad, especially if sung by the incomparable Andy Williams:

Richard Taylor: I remember the film Dr. Zhivago when it came out. I liked it but I couldn't get into reading the book. Must have another go. I was quite a beautiful song I recall at the time. I cant recall the details but I recall the birch trees, the song, sleds in the snow, and the sexy and tragic (then young) Julie Christie who I think was Lara.

Great jokes. Zhivago was a great joker.

  offramp: He used to say:

"Knock knock."

"Who's there?"

"Doctor."

"Doctor who?"

"No. Doctor Zhivago. It's me dude!"

  Domdaniel: Knock, knock.

Who's there?

Mick.

Mick who?

Micoogullari.

Jan-06-14  Strelets: Another funny thing about "Doctor Zhivago": it, a film about the Russian Revolution of 1917, was filmed in Francoist Spain. Scenes of crowds chanting quotes from Lenin or Trotskii were mistaken by police as evidence of a communist uprising.
Jan-06-14  pericles of athens: 32...Rb6??? is a stunning blunder. I've only been playing for a few years but I saw that that was a horrible move immediately.

The straightforward, obvious 32...Rb1+ and 32...Nxc6 hold even for black.

Jan-06-14  Karposian: <offramp: <Strelets: I'm always good for a "Doctor Zhivago" joke.> Same here. There is nothing quite like a really good Dr Zhivago joke.>

Yeah. me too. It's quite a big thing where I live. I just heard this one the other day :

Betty and Sylvia, two middle-aged ladies, have just spent many hours together shopping in the West End. As they leave Selfridges, Betty says, "Sylvia, it’s 2pm and I could do with a nice rest. How about us going to see the new film Dr Zhivago? It’s only just opened here in London and they say it’s very good." "Good idea, Betty," replies Sylvia.
So they walk round the corner to the cinema, go up to the box office and ask the ticket clerk, "How much are the tickets?" "Tickets this week, ladies, are £20 each," replies the ticket clerk. "How much did you say?" asks Sylvia, looking a bit shocked. "£20 each, madam," comes the reply.
"So what is he, this doctor Zhivago - a specialist?" asks Sylvia.

Medical Professor: Really? I thought it was Rachmaninoff. I'm going for a smoke.>

Jan-10-14  kevin86: A Russian Romance...kind of describle chess in the late 20th century...the 21st century is somewhat different.
