Jun-18-15  Marmot PFL: For several moves he was one tempo from lost

offramp: The knight is heading for g6.

FSR: <Marmot PFL> He did indeed, but surely Giri is at least Woliston's equal.
Jun-18-15  Marmot PFL: Think Giri is playing it well. King blocks the pawns and keeps the WK out and leaves the knight free to harass the king.

  offramp: Carlsen might win this.

AylerKupp: <<FSR> Black drew the same ending in M L Hanauer vs P Woliston, 1940.>

In that game the position after 56...Nxb1

is a theoretical win for White (mate in 30) per the 6-piece Nalimov tablebases. Of course, being a theoretical win and being able to win it are two different things, and that game shows how hard it is to actually win it.

In contrast with this game's position after 58...Nxd4

click for larger view

both Black's king and knight are closer to White's k-side pawns. And in a position where a single tempo could change the outcome, that is a big difference.

FSR: Interestingly, Komodo doesn't like 57...Re4 at all. Evidently it "thinks" that the position is a lot easier to hold with rooks on. That was also my feeling.
Jun-18-15  Marmot PFL: Black probably didn't want to risk the rook pinning the knight and then pawns attacking it, and most likely figured he would draw this.

Penguincw: In R1, the longest game was 60 moves. In R2, the longest game was 61 moves. Here, it's going to be 70+ moves. The long games are getting longer!

BTW: Is a 6 hour round normal? I feel like I've been watching this game forever. :)

FSR: <Marmot PFL> The ending looks kinda scary to us duffers (even though a theoretical draw), but 2800-ish players like Giri doubtless have more confidence in their technique.

Penguincw: And this game is drawn! Great game by both players. Carlsen had the win, but he couldn't find the hard-to-see bishop sacrifice, and this game is drawn.

With this draw, Carlsen gets on the scoreboard, but Giri retains his positive/undefeated record against Carlsen.

Jun-18-15  Marmot PFL: Thanks cg for the game. Guess we won't see a carlsen interview. he has to prepare for Anand. Giri gets Nakamura.

Penguincw: Tomorrow, Carlsen gets black against Anand, who has drawn all his games so far. Giri will get white against Nakamura, while the other leader (Topalov), has white against Aronian.

chancho: If Carlsen had found that Bf7+ sac, that would have been his immortal.

But, he missed it.

MissScarlett: Sacrifices on empty squares are best left to problemists, those true chess artists.
Jun-18-15  morfishine: Very credible and incredible game from the OTB standpoint. Of course, the irresistible engines will churn out their irrepressible opinions and the unending debate will commence
Jun-19-15  abadravi: This is the Carlsens old strategy to keep playing and make opponent tired. But Giri defended accurately. Till move 76. Hats off to both. Even this is draw I enjoyed game

OhioChessFan: <offramp: Minus one is not deep trouble. You get that after one move in the king's gambit.>

I tried that.

1. e4 e5

And no matter how long I let any engine run, none come up with a minus one eval.

That is one move of a chess game, not one move of a King's Gambit.

Jun-22-15  Howard: For those of us such as myself who don't have the time right now to go through the last 20-30 moves, did Carlsen ever have a win once the rooks came off, at the 59th move ?

AylerKupp: <Howard> Theoretically, no. See my earlier posts Carlsen vs A Giri, 2015 (kibitz #136) and Carlsen vs A Giri, 2015 (kibitz #155) for the reasons.
Feb-13-16  Hawkman: If Carlsen had found 38.Bf7+, this would be his immortal game.
Feb-13-16  thegoodanarchist: < Hawkman: If Carlsen had found 38.Bf7+, this would be his immortal game.>

If 38...Kxf7, then what? Does White play 39.Ng5+ or something else?
