Aug-12-15  siggemannen: nice kill by Khisma
Aug-12-15  paavoh: Yes, a nice finish but didn't Svidler actually castle into it? I did not get the idea of O-O-O, as any potential K side attack by White would have been much slower than that of Black.

Penguincw: Stunning mate OTB! And in the final position, it was a royal fork (also double check and mate). I remember in one of my casual OTB games, I got mated, with a royal fork in the final position.

NN vs. Me, 2013? (black side on bottom)

In a position (something like this), I was clearly winning, but blundered horribly with 1...Qc6?? (threatening mate on g2). My opponent immediately pointed out that was a terrible move, and played 2.Ne7# 1-0. However, it took awhile for either side to realize it was actually mate.

yes he did! and your assessment is quite correct. I personally would have castled K side. Peter's choice is actually quite startling to me. It's like castling Q-side into a Dragon Var. without early h4 etc. But the mate net is a well known idea among GM's. I have seen it in games, and have also used it myself in 10 and 15 min games, so I'm almost shocked Peter fell into such an attack. O well.

FSR: <Pawn Sac> I suspect that Svidler realized that he was completely lost in any event, saw the queen sac, and decided that since he was going to lose anyway he might as well cooperate and create a beautiful game for the spectators. A classy move.
Aug-12-15  Sihlous: Totally agree...When it's that pretty you gotta let em play it.

And not a first for Svidler. He is extremely humble and cooperative when he is on the wrong end of some brilliacies. Him asking for Vishy to castle on his final move in Anand vs Svidler, 1999, or him not playing out the ending afetr the beautiful 31. Rg5! in Mamedyarov vs Svidler, 2014 come to mind.

Yeah, the Anand story is a relatively a famous one. Those who were not familiar with it, should definitely check Svidler's commentary on that game in https://m.youtube.com/watch?t=12m11....

Aug-13-15  luzhin: From a problemist's point of view, the 'puzzle' is wrecked by the fact that 29...Nd3 mate is a dual solution. But in practical chess it merely meant that Black had a pleasant dilemma as to which of two spectacular mates to play.
Aug-13-15  posoo: Lol WHY is it only chess dat always dos da samebnicknaminf thing??? ABY time u have a Russian playing with more than two syllables in his name u take da. First two syllables only?

WHY

KHISNA

Aug-13-15  Ulhumbrus: Black carries out his pawn attack by 17...a5 and 18...a4 while Svidler does not advance his h pawn at all but attacks in the centre. This suggests the question: why does Svidler's central attack not succeed? One answer is that at some point Svidler chooses a wrong way to prosecute it. Suppose that it is a mistake to accept the exchange by 21 Bxa8. If so three alternatives are 21 Qxb4, 21 Nd5 and 21 Rd1
Aug-14-15  ex0duz: Awesome..! What a finish! One of the most pretty/beautiful finishing mates that i've seen in chess.. and to pull it off vs someone like Svidler is even better, although i guess for Denis himself, even if the odds aren't in his favor, it's not like he got struck by lightning twice or won the lottery or something, since he IS a 2650+ GM.

You can play like 100 bad games in a row and be on tilt, but if you play just one of these types of games and vs a strong opponent too, it will make your day/week/month/year/life/afterlife.. IE if you just happen to play a game that's dubbed an 'immortal game' by chess fans and your peers, that has the ability to outlast your life easily..

Maybe something like Wei Yi's recent game vs Bruzon would fall into this category and is a good example..

But yeah. Just like how Morphy is long gone, he is 'immortalized' because of his numerous 'immortal' chess games. He's a legend that we still remember/respect/admire.. and 'we' also includes modern day SuperGM's.. although i can't recall off the top of my head if any of them actually/specifically named Morphy as one of their favourite players/past champions etc.

Fully agree, as spectator I love especially the final sequence of the game after 23...Qa7, White has simply no good moves left and decided to co-creating for 'his own' mating net!

Peter Svidler, one of the smartest chess player of the world and a contemporary role model for us all in the chess community today; and besides - he is already a historic and record seven-times National Russian Chess Champion (1994, 1995, 1997, 2003, 2008, 2011 and 2013).

Penguincw: Hmm, I thought this position looked familiar.

Even though this game was like, less than a month ago (and I visited it too, as indicated by my above pointless post), I can't believe I didn't get it.

I got 26...Qa2+ 27.Kc1 Qa1+ 28.Bxa1 Rxa1+ 29.Kb2. However, I missed a mate in one (!), and went for 29...Rxh1, which actually leads <black> to be mated.

Another half point for me, I guess.

3/4 this week, 2/3 this month.
