Oct-20-16  John Abraham: seems a crazy game, Short playing quite will in this days !
Oct-20-16  RookFile: Lame opening by white. A French player like Short has survived a lot worse attacks than this.
Oct-20-16  CountryGirl: Hou is no Polgar. Nevertheless, she is a fantastic player and her experience in this match will definitely help her improve. If Yifan is really ambitious about her chess, she will copy Judit's example and prioritise playing in tournaments with men. Forget the Women's World Championship if you want to make the most of your talent, Yifan!

I have come to the conclusion that her federation simply would not allow her to do that. China isn't going to just leave a world championship on the table.

Oct-20-16  mrfuddington: Can't she just be doing it for the money? She won $120,000 euros for winning in 2015.
Oct-21-16  Robyn Hode: Ouch, that was punishing.

White's opening play after move 4 seems designed to avoid the bishop trade after a black ...Bb5, standard in the Wade variation. But it doesn't work very well as the Bish gets chopped off anyway.

Nigel has indeed survived far worse: White's 'attack' barely exists apart from some crude and obvious kingside threats, easily met. What's impressive here is the way Short judiciously combines defensive moves with powerful attacking ones of his own.

Oct-28-16  Atking: Cleverly played by Nigel. I like Black already at move 12...Nc6.
